A tough as nails catcher from Northern California, the Chargers picked up Boyd to be a stable, if unspectacular, backup to Raul Hernandez.

Description

This is a Success Mode backup catcher for my custom team, the Charlotte Chargers. He is based on last year's, but a little more believable as a reserve, instead of the superb hitter last year's was. This year's version colelcted a huge number of hitting special abilities, so I left his contact down to 6 (E) to compensate. After working with Jaw I acquired Trash Talk, the defining characteristic which makes Boyd worth starting now and then. I would've had higher power, but a botched Goodjob operation left me worse off than I anticipated.

Boyd looks like he will work with certain pitchers, or get starts when Hernandez needs a rest. Boyd will be a downgrade, both defensively and in the power category; however, his ability to pull the ball and come through with a rallying hit, combined with his rare ability to unsettle a hitter in the batter's box, make him a worthwhile bench player. His arm is also slightly stronger than Hernandez's, making Boyd an ideal pairing with a slow-tossing starter like Nate Andrews.
