It seems like it would be better to have a string of "boosts" ended up a "gamble".
E.g., if you get 13 strength and 15 technique (as a pitcher), grab 3 stamina and 2 control, THEN topspeed. The gamble chance for top speed, fastball life, and other expensive abilities will always be ~3% (!!) this way, but it's massively efficient in terms of total points used.
