Rookie Charm is an item that your character starts with in Success Mode. The description says that it makes fielding happen automatically; however, players report that even after selling this item, fielding is still handled by the AI.
Also, players report that using the Rookie Charm actually decreases experience gained in games.
The Superstar game will be manual fielding without the Rookie Charm, as will playing as a captain. Regardless, it always gives lock-on while hitting, making it a lot easier.
