San Francisco Giants (11-5) @ St. Louis Cardinals (5-11)

April 18, 2011

SAN FRANCISCO - This was a rather uneventful game as of offense compared to the two teams' last meeting. There was finally something to talk about in the 4th inning, the Giants having staked a one-run lead. Albert Pujols got things going with a lead-off single, and would be driven in by Matt Holliday to tie the game. Matt Cain, the starter for San Francisco, was able to sandwich a Nick Punto single in between groundouts by Lance Berkman and Yadier Molina. Punto would move to third on the groundouts, and would score on a bouncer lightly tapped down the third base line by Ryan Theriot. The Giants had a chance to tie the game later in the 6th, but made some stupid mistakes and were unable to get a run across. Buster Posey took advantage of a second opportunity just an inning later, hitting a line drive right past shortstop Rafael Furcal and into shallow center field. Pat Burrell, who had pinch-hit for Matt Cain earlier in the inning, scored from second, while Andres Torres moved over a base from first. "Kung Fu Panda" would knock in Torres to break the tie with a hit that dropped between Rafael Furcal and center fielder Corey Patterson, though Posey would be out at third. The Giants got a quick inning from Fernando Hernandez, and extended their lead on a single by Cody Ross and a double by Aubrey Huff. The run would be critical as learned with 2 outs in the 9th, when former Giant Mark DeRosa connected on a pinch-hit RBI double off Brian Wilson. Wilson kept it together even though he allowed 2 other hits in the inning, and got Rafael Furcal to ground out to short to get the save.

SAN FRANCISCO - It's that time of the week again - the time when the top players in each league are commended.

This week, the Tigers' All-Star first baseman Miguel Cabrera (.526, 3 HR, 9 RBI) and the White Sox' Carlos Quentin (.417, 3 HR, 10 RBI), both from the AL Central, were chosen as the best players in the American League for the third week of the season (April 14 to the 20th). Chase Utley (.524, 2 HR, 11 RBI) of the Phillies and Chris Young of the Diamondbacks (.455, 4 HR, 12 RBI) were voted the MVPs of the National League.

San Francisco Giants (12-7) @ Arizona Diamondbacks (9-9)

April 21, 2011

SAN FRANCISCO - It looked like this was going to be a pitcher's duel between Barry Zito and Jason Marquis, until the top of the 3rd, when the Giants outbursted for 5 runs on 6 hits. Their offense essentially hit for the cycle - Angel Chavez lead off the inning with a single, Eli Whiteside legged out a triple, Barry Zito helped himself out with a double, and Andres Torres topped it off with a three-run blast into the pool in right field. Freddy Sanchez doubled for what was the fourth extra base hit of the inning. Pat Burrell would single after a Carlos Beltran fly out, but the next two batters would be retired by Armando Galarraga. Barry Zito should have cruised the rest of the way - he plated another run and Andres Torres belted a second three-run bomb in the top of the 4th - but San Fran's starter looked pretty messy in the bottom of the inning, allowing 3 runs on 5 hits. The 6'4" lefty tried to get through the D'Backs half of the 5th, but after allowing back-to-back base hits to Chris Young and Miguel Montero, was pulled for Fernando Hernandez, who easily shut down the next three batters. Aubrey Huff made up for Zito with a three-run shot of his own in the top of the 7th. Fernando Hernandez, who has pitched well in the chances he's got this year, suddenly blew up in the bottom of the 7th. The young righty labored through the inning, allowing 4 runs (3 earned). He redeemed himself with a hit and a run scored in what would be a 6-run inning for the Giants. That would double their lead, and although the Diamondbacks cut the deficit with two solo homeruns (one off Sergio Romo in the 8th, one off Brian Wilson in the 9th), San Francisco's bearded closer was able to preserve the lead and Fernando Hernandez's first major league win.

San Francisco Giants (14-7) @ San Diego Padres (11-10)

April 23, 2011

SAN FRANCISCO - Another classic pitchers duel ensued in this one. The game was held scoreless until the top of the 6th, when Carlos Beltran doubled and later scored on a blooper by Buster Posey that just dropped in front of Cameron Maybin in center field. That would be the only damage done by the Giants to Aaron Harang, but his putrid offense didn't back it up. Matt Cain delivered a 5-hit complete game gem in a game that went by really fast.

Cincinnati Reds (7-16) @ San Francisco Giants (15-8)

April 25, 2011

SAN FRANCISCO - The Giants drew first blood in this match-up with Cincinnati, taking a 3-0 1st inning lead. In the 3rd, Pat Burrell tacked onto the lead with a slam to left field. Johnny Cueto was tense, and San Francisco capitalized. Cueto gave up singles to Jeff Keppinger and Angel Chavez and later gave up the Giants' second run of the inning. It wasn't his fault though, because an error by Fred Lewis in center field allowed Jeff Keppinger to come around from second. The Reds got both of the runs back in the 4th off Ryan Vogelsong. The "Redlegs" made it a one-run game later in the 6th, knocking in two more runs on doubles by Joey Votto and Jay Bruce as well as a single by Ramon Hernandez. Both clubs' starters exited the game in the bottom of the 6th; Bill Bray relieved Cueto and Vogelsong was pinch-hit for by Buster Posey. The move turned the tables quickly: Bill Bray shut down the Giants for two innings while Fernando Hernandez served up the go-ahead homer to Jay Bruce in the top of the 8th. Ramon Ramirez would relieve Hernandez. The Reds were held down for one inning, but extended their lead off the veteran right-hander in their half of the 9th. Bill Bray began with a ground out, and then Fred Lewis singled and scored on a Brandon Phillips two-bagger. Ramirez would strand Phillips and Paul Janish (who had reached on an infield single) by striking out Jay Bruce on a full count. Bill Bray would hand the reigns over to Francisco Cordero to try and wrap it up.
(Here we go. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=22ut_pzoWgY)
Pat Burrell and Aubrey Huff grounded out to start the inning. Pablo Sandoval came into pinch-hit for Jeff Keppinger. The big third baseman singled, and the next pinch-hitter, Carlos Beltran, knocked him home with a double. The game now in favor of the Reds 8-7, the third straight pinch-hitter, Freddy Sanchez, ripped one into center field and scored Beltran. Coco Cordero was chased out of the game, and gave way to Nick Masset. Buster Posey, who had entered the game earlier as a pinch-hitter, came through in the clutch with a walk-off RBI double into the left center field gap to win the game and send the fans home happy.

Final Score:
Reds: 8
Giants: 9

W - R. Ramirez (1-1) L - F. Cordero (0-3)

HR: Burrell (4), Bruce (3)

GIANTS ACQUIRE JOEY BATS, ROMERO FROM 'JAYS FOR BELTRAN, ZITO, ROWAND

ImageImage

ImageImageImageImage

SAN FRANCISCO - In what was the Giants' first blockbuster trade of the year, the team acquires one of the best bats in all of baseball in Jose Bautista. They also received P Ricky Romero from Toronto in exchange for OF Carlos Beltran, P Barry Zito, OF Aaron Rowand and 4000 P.

Bautista, 29, is batting .292 with 4 homers and 16 RBI so far this season.
Bautista became a star last year when he broke out for 54 bombs, a major-league best.
He'll immediately fill the 3 hole left by Carlos Beltran and provides the Giants with the big power source they've been looking for.

Romero, 26, is 2-2 with a 7.17 ERA and 18 strikeouts in 4 starts this season. Batters are hitting .337 off of him.
He'll be the team's number 3 pitcher, with Jonathan Sanchez and Ryan Vogelsong moving down a spot. The trio of Lincecum, Cain, and himself makes the team's rotation one of the best in the league.

Beltran, who just turned 34 a few days ago, is hitting .326 with 7 homers and 31 RBI this season.
Beltran helps to fill the void left by Bautista and is still a difference maker, but is on the downside of his career and has a big contract for a player his age. Even without Bautista, Beltran along with Colby Rasmus and Travis Snider still makes for a solid outfield combo.

Zito, 32, is 3-1 with a 5.26 ERA and 19 strikeouts in 5 starts this season. He has only given up 1 home run.
Zito should fill in fine for Romero in Toronto, but like Beltran is about to decline.

Rowand, 33, has not gotten an at-bat with San Francisco this season after not making the Opening Day roster.
Rowand is in pretty much the same situation as he was with the Giants. The Blue Jays already have Colby Rasmus, Travis Snider, Rajai Davis, and Carlos Beltran in the outfield. It'll be hard to fit him in with Edwin Encarnacion already DHing.
It also doesn't bode well for the team's payroll if Rowand and his contract are on the bench.

The Giants went looking for teams to take on Zito and Rowand's contracts, and were also willing to trade Beltran, who also has a high salary. They were looking to get a young pitcher in the trade for Zito, and they did a good job in getting the Blue Jays to hand over Romero. They were also looking to get a young outfielder in return for Beltran. In the trade, the team removes plenty of points from their payroll and gets two young, cost-efficient players who are near the top of the league at their position.

The Blue Jays added one of the best players in the league as well, but at a very high price. Toronto loses Bautista and Romero while taking on alot of points. Zito isn't as good as Romero, and adding Rowand only adds more players to its already plentiful outfield. The Jays might have to have Rowand on the bench with his contract. They get 4000 P to help them out financially, though.

Canada's only baseball team clearly lost this trade and downgraded at both areas.
The Giants, meanwhile, rob the Blue Jays of their two best young players.

* In other news, the Giants were offered a trade from the Red Sox: P Franklin Morales for C Chris Stewart.
The Giants are rumored to be looking for some bullpen help, and Morales could fill in as a long reliever, but the Giants probably won't take this one. They'd like to have an extra catcher in AAA in case Buster Posey gets injured.

* San Francisco is said to searching for an available first baseman, along with some relievers. The team is also said to be open to trading infielder Freddy Sanchez and outfielders Pat Burrell and Andres Torres.

Does anyone want to have agents? This being my first log, I didn't really want to do it, but I think it'll make this log more fun.
