Have to make some roster edits. Should be up by tomorrow or tonight.

8/9 EDIT: Just waiting on Madison Bumgarner (http://mlbppworld.com/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=4706), once he gets done, I'll get this show on the road.

8/9 EDIT: Should I just forget Madison? I already have 5 SP.

8/9 EDIT: I think I'll just forget Bumgarner because I already have all of the Giants SP (Lincecum, Cain, J.Sanchez, Zito, Vogelsong) and I'll just put him in later if someone makes him.

Rosters coming!

YOUNG GM UNSEATS FIRED SABEAN

Image

SAN FRANCISCO - Just a year after GM Brian Sabean lead the San Francisco Giants to the promised land, the 44-year-old has been fired. Sabean has held the job since 1997 when he replaced former GM Bob Quinn. In the twelve years he has been the general manager, his team has has a winning record in eight of them. The 2003 Executive of the Year's moves since taking over as the GM have been strongly criticized many of times by Giants fans and their media, and although San Francisco won their first championship since 1954 last year, the Giants decided it was the end of an era. And so, they hired an inexperienced youngster by the name of Nick P. Many predict him to fail, even though he is in charge of the game's current champions. Can he silence the critics? Will he make the moves that once again lead the Giants to the top?

The story of the 2011 San Francisco Giants and their new general manager begins now...

NEW GM READY TO SHAKE UP ROSTER

SAN FRANCISCO - The Giants have plenty of spots that need to be fought for in the days leading up to the season opener against the Dodgers. The team's new GM acknowledged he'll be quick to make moves to better the team:

Quote:
Well, yeah, you always have to think that way. You always have to explore your options, be open to whatever you can do to make the team the best they can be.

He also said that he is going for the young approach, and that he will build for the future in any move that he makes:

Quote:
Yeah, I'm gonna be going for young guys that we can have for a while. I like having the flexibility of knowing I'll have this spot or that spot filled when I'm thinking about making a move.

A few areas that the GM mentioned he'll probably look into are the outfield, the middle infield, and backup catcher.

San Francisco has a glut of outfielders that will make for an interesting battle up to the season opener. Nate Schierholtz is one guy who the new GM has singled out as already having a spot in the outfield. That leaves Andres Torres, Pat Burrell, Cody Ross, Carlos Beltran, and Aaron Rowand. When you consider the young GM wants younger players, that makes pretty much any player in this area a possibility to be traded. We could see a trade or two before the season involving the outfielders.

The team also has plenty of middle infielders, including Mike Fontenot, Orlando Cabrera, Miguel Tejada, Bill Hall, Mark DeRosa, and Emmanuel Burriss. Burriss and Fontenot currently have the edge due to the fact that they are younger than the rest of the group. There isn't room for more than two or three of them, and so we should expect whoever doesn't make the team to be moved.

The backup catcher role is another battle to watch out for, with the better offensive player most likely winning. It'll be either Eli Whiteside or Chris Stewart who backs up reigning NL Rookie of the Year Buster Posey. Don't expect a trade here. Whoever doesn't make the team will likely just get sent down because the team would like to have an extra catcher down in AAA, and both Whiteside and Stewart are pretty reliable defenders, which is also a plus in case Posey goes down.

GIANTS SIGN PAIR OF PITCHERS, INFIELDER
The Giants young general manager has said he is going to be quick to make moves as players battle out for spots. His first is picking up a few players to possibly make the team or provide insurance in the minors.

The team signed P Kirk Saarloos, P Fernando Hernandez, and IF Angel Chavez to minor league deals.

Saarloos, 31, last pitched in 2008 with the A's. In 165 career games, the veteran pitcher is 29-30 with a .295 batting average against. He could make the team as a long reliever.

Hernandez, 26, last pitched in 2010 with the A's minor league affiliates, after debuting with Oakland in 2008. He appeared in only 3 games with the Athletics in 2008 after being plucked from the White Sox in the 2007 Rule 5 Draft. He has not returned to the majors since, and isn't a good bet to make the team, but is still young and has some potential left.

Chavez, 29, was playing with the Bridgeport Bluefish of the independent Atlantic League. The veteran infielder has bounced around a few minor league teams since debuting with the Giants in 2005. Now in his second stint with the team, Chavez provides depth in the infield and could see an opportunity this season.

GIANTS SELL HALL TO KC FOR CASH

ImageImage

SAN FRANCISCO - The Giants made another quick move as we await the team's season opener against Los Angeles, sending IF/OF Bill Hall to the Royals for 6000 P.

The trade cuts down one player from the Giants infield battle, and the team adds some points.

The Royals add some much needed depth in Hall, who can play pretty much every position but catcher. He could very well be a starter in the infield for Kansas City.

GIANTS TRADE MOTA TO NATIONALS FOR CASH CONSIDERATIONS

ImageImage

SAN FRANCISCO - The Giants trimmed down their roster once more, this time sending 37-year-old pitcher Guillermo Mota to the Nationals for 2000 P.

The Giants lose depth at pitcher, but gain more financial flexibility by adding on more points.

The Nationals add an extra pitcher, which they need more of. Mota doesn't have much left at his age, but is currently slated as the team's second set-up man along with Doug Slaten, both serving as the bridge to closer Sean Burnett.

GIANTS SELL ANOTHER, SHIP TEJADA BACK TO HOUSTON

ImageImage

SAN FRANCISCO - The Giants continue to shave off salary by selling their players for cash returns. This time, they traded longtime veteran SS Miguel Tejada back to one of his former teams in the Astros for 9000 P.

The Giants obtain more payroll relief and get rid of Tejada's 12660 P salary. The team now has $114304 P to work with. It's one less infielder for San Francisco though.

Tejada, while not productive as he once was, is a nice piece to add to an anemic Astros offense that is begging for a semi-popular player. The Astros didn't have too many bench players, and with Tejada likely taking shortstop, someone will end up on the bench. It's a nice add for Houston, but 9000 P is a high price to pay.

GIANTS TO SQUARE OFF WITH DODGERS IN SEASON OPENER

Image
Image

SAN FRANCISCO - 2011 Opening Day is here, and this year the reigning world champs take on the crosstown rival Dodgers.
The classic rivalry dates back to when the teams were in New York and Brooklyn, respectively.
It's the first of six series between the NL West rivals, and the first three games of the team's stretch of six road games to start the year.

Every team's roster is set, and Giants manager Bruce Bochy has announced his team's Opening Day depth chart, lineup, and pitching staff:

Depth Chart

LF - Nate Schierholtz / Cody Ross / Pat Burrell
CF - Andres Torres / Cody Ross
RF - Carlos Beltran / Cody Ross
3B - Pablo Sandoval / Mike Fontenot / Jeff Keppinger
SS - Emmanuel Burriss / Mike Fontenot / Jeff Keppinger
2B - Freddy Sanchez / Mike Fontenot / Jeff Keppinger
1B - Aubrey Huff / Jeff Keppinger
C - Buster Posey / Eli Whiteside

Lineup

Andres Torres CF
Freddy Sanchez 2B
Carlos Beltran RF
Buster Posey C
Pablo Sandoval 3B
Pat Burrell -- W/DH
Aubrey Huff 1B
Nate Schierholtz LF
Emmanuel Burriss SS
P

Rotation

Tim Lincecum
Matt Cain
Jonathan Sanchez
Ryan Vogelsong
Barry Zito

Bullpen

CL Brian Wilson
SU Sergio Romo
SU Jeremy Affeldt
SU/LOOGY Javier Lopez
MR Ramon Ramirez
MR Santiago Casilla
LR Kirk Saarloos

This confirms that Chris Stewart, Aaron Rowand, Orlando Cabrera, Mark DeRosa, and Angel Chavez will be in AAA Fresno for the time being. Chris Stewart and Angel Chavez are the only ones likely to not be traded this season.

This probably won't be the same roster a few weeks from now, as we can tell new GM Nick P. is going to be aggressive on the trade front. When asked in a press conference recently what happened in trade talks leading up to the season, the young general manager said he made plenty of offers, but other GMs weren't looking to trade:

Quote:
Yeah, I went out there looking to improve the team, but there weren't too many guys willing to trade.

The Giants made plenty of swaps including money, but talks about player-for-player trades didn't progress at all. It's rumored GM Nick was looking to trade the positions that they had a lot of depth in (IF and OF) and was looking to acquire a player at any position except closer, third base, and catcher.

They still have plenty of time to make more moves, and you can bet that the team's young general manager will be talking up the trade front every day up to the deadline, always looking to improve the team.

UP NEXT: Giants at Dodgers, Opening Day

San Francisco Giants (0-0) @ Los Angeles Dodgers (0-0)
Opening Day 2011

SAN FRANCISCO - The Giants would get on the board first, in the top of the 2nd, when Chad Billingsley uncorked a wild pitch with runners on second and third. Aubrey Huff would score from 3rd and Nate Schierholtz would move over from 2nd. Emmanuel Burriss would tack on to the lead in the same at-bat with a sac fly that scored Schierholtz from third. Carlos Beltran would add on later in the 4th with a three-run shot that just got into the left field seats. The Giants would put up three more runs, and that would be all Tim Lincecum needed to shut down the Dodgers through 7 and 2/3 innings, allowing just 2 runs (one of them coming on a solo homer) on 8 hits and striking out 10. He began to look fatigued in the 7th with 2 outs, and a solo homer did him out. Sergio Romo would come on and finish the inning. The Dodgers started a rally in the bottom of the 9th, when you could tell Brian Wilson was obviously not on his game. (Was the beard rusty? ) Wilson allowed 3 runs on 5 hits, striking out just 1. He was able to get two outs though, and Jeremy Affeldt would get the last out to give the Giants an Opening Day win.

Final Score:
Giants: 8
Dodgers: 5

GIANTS FINALIZE DEAL WITH CARDINALS, SEND DEROSA TO ST. LOUIS

Image

SAN FRANCISCO - The Giants keep making moves for money, and just a day after their Opening Day win over the Dodgers, they shipped IF/OF Mark DeRosa to the Cardinals for 3500 P.

The Giants now have $116698 P, which is a great amount they can use to upgrade the team.

DeRosa, now in his second go-around with the Cardinals, provides the team with some versatility, as he has played third base, second base, first base, and the outfield. He's a solid option to have on the bench.
