Hi guys,

I know pitchers in this game tire quickly but it seems like too often my pitchers with A stamina are worn out after five innings. How exactly am I supposed to deal with this? Am I wasting too many pitches? Or conversely am I just not throwing enough over the plate for the AI to swing at (AI set to expert batting - normal btw).

Additionally, it seems like when I throw my starters until they're tired they're not 100% recovered for their next start after four days of rest. Am I doing something wrong that I don't know about? It's just frustrating having so little stamina to work with. I don't want pitchers throwing consistent complete games but too often I'm struggling to get through five with a starter who's having a good day.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

I find using a larger rotation helps a lot. If you have 6 or 7 starters, your guys get more rest, so your free to use a starter as long as you want. As for pitch count I usually can keep mine low enough that by the 6th or 7th inning they are just sweating.

I've seen one interesting idea presented by EricDavis44 before but I've never tried it myself. Go through most if not all the starters and give them recovery 4, which will help them recover faster between starts. I meant to do it before I started my A's season, but I completely forgot about it the day I started it up. Also, if you throw them til they're just wiping their brow then they should probably be good to go for their next start. If you pitch them til they are panting like a dog, then they probably won't be. I usually always try to take my pitcher out right when he starts wiping his brow, unless he's very close to a complete game or something.

I have a question about how you are pitching. Do you tap the X(or whatever button it is for wii) button more than once to give your pitches more power? Because that will wear the pitcher down much faster. I only tap it once, and it helps him last longer in the game. I realize you'll have guys throwing fastballs at 83 and 84 when they should really be around 88 or 89, but that's something you just gotta live with in this game unless you want to bump up their stamina.

@duke - With my starting pitchers I never tap repeatedly (I think it's B on the classic controller) so I am getting by with minimum effort on my pitches already. It's only with harder throwing relievers that I'll amp up velocity to help get out of a jam. Even then I'm not sure the slight velocity boost is worth the energy loss.

The idea of giving my younger/healthier starters [recovery 4] is a good one. That should at least let me run a normal 5-man rotation most of the time and be able to pitch them until they're tired. I can accept having to give a swing man or sixth starter a start every once in a while (scratched starts happen) but having to run a six man rotation all of the time is a little ridiculous.

Maybe a stamina boost before I start the season is in order too. I notice guys like Halladay have ~200 stamina but the dropoff is significant from there. When I've pitched with him I see to be able to get into the 7th-8th consistently so would it be unreasonable to just edit all starters who normally go 6-7 into the 160-170 range? It feels like too many starters have 140-160 stamina and it's just not enough. I think the roster guy at Konami simply took raw IP and divided by some number to get the stamina so maybe I should just consider it a flaw and correct it with edits.

Would this totally screw up simmed stats? I don't want AI pitchers all throwing 250 innings. A nice 180-220 range would be good though.

It sounds like the AI gasses out too so maybe I'll have to do some liberal editing before starting my season. Would something like this make sense too:

9IP starter - 200 STAM
8IP starter - 185 STAM
7IP starter - 170 STAM
6IP starter - 155 STAM
5IP starter - 140 STAM

I think most guys would fall between 155-175 with that scale; up a bit from the 130-160 that is stock.

It all depends on pitch count and how hard you throw the pitch.

Josh Beckett's fastball is 98mph. However, it is usually thrown around 90-91 mph in the same. You can increase it to 97+mph but it will decrease your stamina thoroughly. A pitch count of about 70 will be for the 160-170 range, assuming you throw the ball at its minimum potential. Generally, a good pitch count, efficient outs is a good way to keep the pitcher in. Throw strikes, but never throw it down the middle as hitters can punish you.

I usually pitch to contact (without mashing A button), so I can often get plenty of outs with very few pitches. Because of this, my starting pitchers are easily able to pitch complete games, but with only 1 or 2 strikeouts.
