Hill the tough-loss loser in first Padres start as Maine goes the distance

August 5 -- Rich Hill made his first start with the Padres today and despite a valiant effort, took a loss against the National League best New York Mets. The Padres took a 1-0 lead in the first inning off a Kyle Blanks RBI single but the game would be tied when Mike Jacobs hit an RBI double to tie it in the 2nd inning. After that it would be a major pitchers duel between John Maine and Hill. Maine would allow 5 hits in the 1st 3 innings but would allow no hits after the 3rd inning. Rich Hill was dominant striking out 8 but gave up the go-ahead RBI single to Luis Castillo in the 8th inning to give New York a lead going into the 9th. The Mets would give John Maine a chance to complete the game and he would firing a complete game giving up just 1 run.

Padres hold on to complete sweep of Rockies

August 10 -- The Padres managed to snap a 5-game skid to begin August and they did it as they swept the Rockies in 3 games. The Padres took a 1-0 lead when Blanks pulled a ball for an RBI single to make it 1-0 but Rockies tied it in the 3rd when Tulowitzki homered to deep center. The Pads retook the lead in the 5th on Gonzalez's 33th home run of the season and added an insurance run the next inning with a run-scoring single by Eckstein. After Colorado came within a run with a Barmes homer in the 6th, the Rockies rethreatened again in the 8th when Giambi pinch hit with 2 men on and 2 men out in a 3-2 game. Bell would come in and get him to pop out and after a solo shot from Headley in the 9th, Bell would finish it off getting the 4 out save.

Bell struggles in 9th as Brewers complete sweep

August 14 -- The Padres learned a lot from this game, most of it not good as the Brewers completed a sweep in San Diego. The Brewers took a 1-0 lead in the 2nd inning of a solo home run by Jim Edmonds to make it 1-0. But the Padres would tie it in the 3rd on an RBI single by Yorvit Torrealba and they would then take the lead in the 4th on a sacrifice fly by Tony Gwynn and an RBI single by Mike Morse to make it 3-1 but Milwaukee would get one back in the 6th on a solo shot by Corey Hart. We go to the 9th inning when it has no been easy lately with Heath Bell and it was the story again tonight. Jerry Hairston tried to make a leaping grab with 1 out in the 9th against the wall and missed for a double by Edmonds but Hairston had to leave the game. Then Casey McGahee followed with an RBI double to tie the game at 3-3 and then former Padre Jody Gerut would line a pinch hit single into center field to give the Brewers the lead and the win for the sweep. But what we've learned in this game is the Padres offense is a big problem right now as they have struggled mightily to score in August. Bell's ERA has gone up to 4.21 and has now blown 5 saves and they have been swept by the Mets and Brewers in August, both 2 of the top 3 teams in the NL. Despite this they only trail by 2 games to the Diamondbacks.

Broken Collarbone Sidelines Hairston Jr until September
August 15 -- After leaving last night's game after crashing into the wall, doctors diagnosed that Jerry Hairston Jr. will be out for 32 days with a broken collarbone. The 32-year old had been hitting .268 with 1 home run and RBI's but his biggest asset is his ability to play 2B and the outfield. Rookie 2B Calix Crabbe with be called up from AAA while Hairston is working on his rehab assignment. This would also mean that he would miss the playoff deadline on August 31st and he would not be part of a playoff roster for them if they are to make it.

Eckstein comes through as Padres walk-off in 10th

August 19 -- Most days, the Padres don't win this game, but today was not one of those days. Rich Hill was not at his best today as he gave up 3 runs in 5 2/3 inning on RBI singles by Ruiz and Victorino and home run by Howard and just like that it was 3-0 Phillies. 3 runs seemed like a lot today the way Blanton was pitching but the 7th was a breakthrough inning. Headley led off the inning with a home run swinging on a 3-0 pitch to make it 3-1. Then with 2 outs and 1 on, Matt Stairs pinch hit and went deep to tie it for another big hit off the bench for Stairs. The game would go to extras where with 1 out in the 10th, David Eckstein singled to center field scoring the winning run from 2nd in a walk-off win for the Padres and a win that will bring momentum into a Arizona down only 1 game to the Diamondbacks in the West.

Gonzalez's Big Day Gives Padres another series with over D-Backs

August 22 -- The National League West continues to be the race of the year in the NL as the Padres took two out of three from the Arizona Diamondbacks to tie the NL West again, note that the Padres have been tied atop the West numerous times but have NOT taken first place alone this entire season. The big 4th inning was all it took for the Padres today. Gonzalez hit his league leading 41st home run of the season, a 2-run shot to begin the scoring but Torrealba and Matt Stairs would also single in runs to make it 4-0. That's all it took for Latos who was good again throwing 7 innings of 1-run ball and striking out 7. The Padres would go on to win 6-1 and take yet another game from the Diamondbacks who will visit the Padres next week for their last series of the season.

Sucks for Hairston. Was he close to making the catch? I'm always so hesitant to try to make those catches. I want to press the button to dive or jump to make an awesome catch, but I know that if I do, I'll lose my outfielder for a while.

How does your schedule look until that next series against Arizona? Does it look easy or difficult? If it looks easy, do you think you'll take the division and make it to the playoffs?

And also, you've passed me up in this log. I'm on August 15th in my Royals log, and I'm on vacation away from my Wii until Friday.

Not speaking for Jacobye here, but personally, it seems like if I make the catch, I don't hit the wall, and if I miss it, I'm like, "  :ohsnap:"

D-Backs hold off late comeback to take series from Padres and West lead

August 27 -- Two days ago when the Padres won the 1st game of this series, they were in 1st place for the 1st time this season but now they have lost the last 2 games of this series and trail the Diamondbacks by one game again. The D-Backs took the lead in 1st inning when Adam LaRoche hit a big 3-run double off of Mat Latos to make it 3-0 early. But the Padres chipped away scoring on a passed ball in the 3rd inning and then a sacrifice fly next inning made it 3-2. The D-Backs would take a 5-2 lead going into the bottom of the 7th but came within 2 when Kyle Blanks homered off of Brandon Webb for the Padres first extra base hit of the game to make it 5-3 but Arizona would get the run back in the 9th on a homer by Kelly Johnson. Although unable to do much against the Diamondbacks pitching through the first 8 innings, the Padres rallied off of close Chad Qualls as Hairston and Hundley both blasted back to back RBI doubles with 2 outs in the 9th to make it 6-5. But the D-Backs were smart and instead of keeping Qualls in, the sent in the left-handed pitcher Clay Zavada to pitch to the switch hitter Everth Cabrera which kept Matt Stairs out of the question for pinch hitting against a lefty and their plan worked as they retired Cabrera to end the game and the season series against the Diamondbacks.

He was somewhat close. The thing was that he was running back to the wall so the jump catapulted him into the wall, there was something it that made me think he'd take a rare visit to the DL after that

And as far as Arizona it's never really easy. They don't have great pitching after Webb and Haren, who both pitched this series but their offense is fierce. They hit a ton of doubles and some triples in Petco Park and get a good amount of home runs, especially at Chase Field.

But it'll be tough to win the West now that there are not more head to head games

Do you have any legit WildCard chance?

barely. with the Marlins being bad this month(10-14) it's given me a chance to catch up and I'm only 5 games behind. But I'll surely take my chances in the West to be a lot stronger than winning the wild card

And really I didn't expect to compete this year at all. But luckily the NL West is very weak this year (just like in the real-life 2008)

You can DO it. If the Rockies can win 21 of their last 22 in 2007 to make the playoffs, you can overcome being down 5 games and win the wild card.

Jimenez strikes out 9 in dominance of Padres

August 31 -- The Padres ended an odd month with a 3-0 loss to the Rockies thanks to an incredible effort by Ubaldo Jimenez who allowed 0 runs and 4 hits while striking out 9 in his complete game shut out effort. Troy Tulowitzki started the scoring in the 6th inning with a 2-run home run and Brad Hawpe drove in a run in the 8th inning for the 3rd and final run of the game. The Padres offense just could not do anything today and they only bright spot came from Everth Cabrera who was 3-3 with a double and had 3 of San Diego's 4 hits.
