I just noticed that the NL also has only 2 middle infielders.

In my Royals season mode in the All-Star game, Derek Jeter was the only shortstop I had, and Brian Roberts was the only second baseman I had. They both played the whole game.

Padres end first half with series win

July 13 -- The Padres will head into the all-star break tied with the Diamondbacks for 1st in the West at 52-43 with a series win over the Braves. The Padres were dominated early by Matt Morris as he retired the first 10 guys he faced in the game and thee Braves got off to a good start with McLouth hitting a 1st inning home run and then Jason Heyward singling in the 5th to drive in a run. But San Diego came back with Scott Hairston hitting a 2-run shot in the 7th inning to tie it at 2-2 and then Adrian Gonzalez would drive in the go-ahead and winning run in the 8th inning on a sacrifice fly which would give the Padres a 3-2 victory. And in the game they got their big contributions from their all-star as Gonzalez drove in the winning run in the 8th and their other all-star Ryan Webb got the win.

Gonzalez to DH in all-star game, Webb also gets invite
The Padres will send two representatives to the all-star game in Yankees Stadium, 1B Adrian Gonzalez and surprisingly RP Ryan Webb. Adrian Gonzalez will get the starting DH job for the National League, he leads the majors with 27 home runs and is hitting .319. Ryan Webb has been San Diego's most consistent relief pitcher this season with a 2.09 ERA in 51.2 innings. He is also tied for 1st in the NL in holds with his teammate Tim Stauffer who's ERA has gone up to 2.44.

A-Rod Shines in Bronx All-Star game as AL wins again

Yankee Stadium -- The American League have once again clinched home-field advantage in the World Series with a 3-2 win over the American League in Yankee Stadium. The National League took the lead 1st though as the Padres own Adrian Gonzalez drove in a run in the 1st inning to make it 1-0 but the AL would tie it in the 4th inning on an RBI single by Brian Roberts and a throwing error allowed another run to score to make it 2-1 American League. The AL all-stars were not done yet when the Yankees own Alex Rodriguez homered to make it 3-1 in the 7th inning off of the Padres Ryan Webb. The NL would get a run back in the 8th inning on an RBI single by Tulowitzki but that would not be enough as the National League all-stars fell 3-2. The Yankees own A-Rod won the All-Star Game MVP going 2-3 with a double and a decisive home run. For the Padres Ryan Webb took the loss going 0.1 innings, giving up that home run to Rodriguez and then striking out Miguel Cabrera to end the inning.

Young Shuts Out Cards to split 4-Game set

July 20 -- Chris Young continues to show signs of his dominant self with a complete game shut out of the St Louis Cardinals which helped get the Friars a series split. Young didn't need much offense but he got it with a solo home run by HR leader Adrian Gonzalez in the 3rd inning and the next inning Torrealba would get an RBI single to make it 2-0. Chris Young only allowed 5 hits in his shutout and the only hits of the game were by the first 3 hitters of the game, every other hitter went 0-for.

Gwynn comes up clutch in 9th to stun Reds

July 22 -- The Padres got another good win, this time they had to rally in the 9th for the win. The Padres led 2-0 in the 1st on a 2-run double by Chase Headley and they would lead 4-1 going into the bottom of the 5th. The bottom of the 5th was a disastrous inning for Clayton Richard and the Padres as Phillips and Stubbs both hit 2-run doubles in the frame for a 4-run 4th inning and a 5-4 lead, that lead would be held going into the 9th. Morse singled with 1 out in the 9th and with 2 outs in the 9th he was still at 1st base and they pinch hit for David Eckstein sending in Matt Stairs would double but it would not score the run. But with 2 outs in the 9th, Tony Gwynn Jr would get the big hit, a 2-out, 2-run single to center off of Fransisco Cordero to give the Padres the lead. And Bell would keep it that way as he got Cabrera to fly out to center, Stubbs to strike out swinging, Votto would single but then he got Phillips to pop out to end it. With this the Padres are only 0.5 behind the Diamondbacks.

Duke terrific as Padres hit bump in Pittsburgh

July 27 -- The Pittsburgh Pirates were able to take 3 out of 4 from San Diego after a 5-0 win on Sunday. It was all Pirates in the game and they scored 3 in the third inning on an RBI single by Garrett Jones, an RBI single by Akinori Iwamura and an RBI groundout by Lastings Milledge to make it 3-0 in a tough inning for Garland. The Pirates would tack on 2 more in the 7th inning as Iwamura doubled in a run and Ryan Church homered off the foul pole in right field to make it 5-0. The Padres offense was able to do nothing against Zach Duke who was tremendous firing 8 shutout innings and allowing just 4 hits. Arizona won today so they are 2 games ahead and the Diamondbacks with visit the Padres for a 3-game set to end July.

Latos Struggle as Padres unable to sweep

July 30 -- Coming into this game the Padres had won 7 of 8 from the D-Backs this season and were 8-3 overall but were unable to perform yet another sweep which would have put them in 1st place, a place they haven't been in alone for the whole season. Trouble began early and often for Mat Latos. In the 1st inning he allowed two runs on an RBI single by an RBI double by Kelly Johnson and an RBI single by Justin Upton. Arizona tacked on 3 more in the 5th inning against Latos, who was unable to get an out, to make it 5-0. The Padres put together a rally in the 6th inning on back-to-back bloop RBI singles by Gonzalez and Hairston made it 5-2, that momentum was taken away quickly on a home run by Drew in the 7th to make it 6-2. The Padres got an odd run in the 8th when with runners on the corners, Gwynn was caught in a pickle after trying to steal which allowed Eckstein to take home on an unconventional steal of home. The Padres were able to come within 2 in the 9th on a solo shot by Chase Headley but Qualls got Torrelba to fly out to the warning track in center to end it to give the D-Backs a 1-game lead in the West going into August.

Padres Acquire Hill from Orioles
July 31 -- In a last second trade, the Padres acquired LHP Rich Hill from the Baltimore Orioles for middle infielder Oscar Salazar, RHP Clay Hensley, OF Chris Denorfia and 1,500 points. It can be considered a huge steal for San Diego as they managed to acquire a pitcher that in 119.1 innings has a 3.62 ERA and a 10-6 record for a bad Orioles team which was not looking to resign Hill in the long term. Hill will replace RHP Kevin Correia in the rotation as Correia will be sent down to AAA Portland. Correia has had a tough 2008 with a 7-7 record, but an ugly 6.62 ERA.

Also, rookies OF Will Venable and 2nd round draft pick Mike Barnwell will be called up from AAA.

Padres get:
SP - Rich Hill

Orioles get:
IF - Oscar Salazar
OF - Chris Denorfia
RP - Clay Hensley
1500 points

I almost felt like I had to give SOMETHING, and Hensley's ERA is like 6.00 for whatever reason

Padres July In Review

The Padres went 14-11 in July to come within just 0.5 games of the Diamondbacks going into August as Arizona went 11-14 in this month. The Padres offense has been vastly improved through every month and it has been able to match their pitching that has a 4.28 team ERA. Chris Young has been dominant lately lowering his ERA to 4.36, Richard has been consistent ever since he's come off the DL and they traded for Rich Hill who was the Orioles ace. Heath Bell may be a concern though. He has blown only 3 saves but his ERA has inflated up to 4.14 which is among league worst for closers. The Padres offense has been powered though Adrian Gonzalez who has 30 home runs and leads the team in average but Kyle Blanks has been terrific and Nick Hundley has also been a great surprise. It has a chance to be a great season but first they have to make it past August.
