Pirates Acquire Cabrera From Tribe For Cedeno and Pitching
Image
The Pirates have acquired SS/2B Asdrubal Cabrera(E,D,E,C,A) from the Indians for SS/2B Ronny Cedeno, P Tyler Yates and P Mel Stynes. Cabrera hit .215 with 1 homerun with the Indians so far and is excited to go to the Pirates and compete. It was kind of a 1 on 1 trade which sent two struggling shortstops to other teams but Tyler Yates was included because the Indians desperately needed bullpen help and Mel Stynes, a draft pick a few years ago, was thought to be worthless to the Pirates right now. Cabrera has more tools such as his abilities to hit lefties and has a chance to excel in Pittsburgh. The Pirates will get to see Cedeno again in June when the Pirates go to Progressive Field. A-Cab is expected to hit 8th and he will make his debut Saturday against the Padres.

Floyd Plays Hero As Mistakes Cost Pirates In Walk-Off

May 20 -- Asdrubal Cabrera made his debut with the Pirates but sadly it was in a winnable loss against the Padres. Pittsburgh would lead early like usual, a 1st inning RBI double by Werth made it 1-0, Doumit doubled in a run in the 5th inning and then in his 1st at bat with the Pirates, Asdrubal Cabrera singled in a run and they led 3-0 against Mark Prior(3.50 ERA). Paul Maholm had a good start tonight but it was wasted. McCutchen dropped a ball in center field with 2 outs in the 6th inning which caused a rally for the Padres down 3-1 in the game. Adrian Gonzalez doubled to make it 2nd and 3rd and 2 outs and then Kevin Kouzmanoff doubled them both in for 2 unearned runs and the game was tied and then in the 7th, Chris Burke chased Maholm from the game with a solo homerun to continue his breakout year(.334 AVG, 8 HR). Down by 1 in the 9th inning, the Pirates rallied. With 2 on, Jamey Carroll pinch hit for Gregg and Carroll put down a bunt to make it 2nd and 3rd with 1 out. The Pirates took a huge risk and it payed off as McCutchen put down a successful squeeze bunt to tie the game at 4. But the Padres would win it in the 9th inning, a key play was with 1 out and 2 on, Ikari botched a ball at third base which could have been a double play but instead he got no one and the bases for loaded. Cliff Floyd took advantage of this and on his 4th hit of the night, gave the Padres a win with a walk-off single.

Cabrera Caps Big 7th Inning As Pirates Rally For Win

May 23 -- Cabrera made a nice impression in his home debut at PNC Park as the Bucs were able to beat the Astros coming off of a big road trip. Ryan Doumit hit a homerun off of Felipe Paulino in the 2nd inning to the opposite field to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead but Houston rallied off of Kyle Lohse with an RBI single by Michael Bourn in the 3rd inning and then RBI singles by Michaels and Pence in the 7th inning to go ahead 3-1. But the Pirates exploded in the 7th inning, Garrett Jones led off the inning with a homerun to deep center, Ryan Doumit tied it with his 2nd RBI of the day and then Asdrubal Cabrera hit his 1st homerun with the Pirates to give them a 7th inning 5-3 lead with his first hit in PNC Park as a Pirates. The Pirates scored another run in the inning after Young hit a pinch hit three bagger and Carroll drove him in and the Pirates scored again in the 8th with a throwing error by 1st basemen Bullinger to score McCutchen from 1st base. Joe Beimel let two runners on to begin the 9th inning in a 7-3 game so Street came in and struck out 3rd basemen MacRae(9 HR, .272 AVG) and then got Bourn into a double play to end the game.

Pirates Part Ways With Dumatrait - Call Up Pignatiello

May 24 -- The Pirates have released LHP Phil Dumatrait who did not do well in his chance with the Pirates. The 31 year old lefty filed a 15.1 ERA in 11.1 innings pitched and was 0-3. The Pirates will hope that LHP Carmen Pignatiello will get back to his 2009 form where he was a useful lefty out of the bullpen for Pittsburgh.

Ikari Gives Pirates Dramatic Walk-Off In 9th Inning Rally

May 26 -- After a powerless beginning to the season with only 4 homeruns(but a .302 avg), Susumu Ikari had a big night tonight to lead the team to the exciting victory over the Padres. It was a pitchers duel early on with Sanchez and Young matching eachother pitch by pitch until Chris Young ran into late trouble in the 7th inning, an RBI single by Jasyon Werth started the scoring and then Ikari homered to make it 2-0. But after Sanchez allowed two on in the 8th inning and 2 outs, the Pirates intentionally walked Adrian Gonzalez to get to Kouzmanoff who hit a 2-run single off of Huston Street for the blown save and to tie the game at 2-2. It just wasn't Street's game though as he gave up a single by pinch hitter Tony Gwynn Jr. in the 9th inning which gave San Diego a 3-2 lead. But the magic happened against closer Clay Hensley. With 1 out, Jayson Werth doubled off the left field wall and the Ikari provided the walk-off homerun to win the game, a 2-run shot, to deep center field to end the game 4-3 and give Pittsburgh its first win against the Padres in 2012.

Werth and Maholm Help End Month On Strong Note

May 31 -- The Pirates have won 5 straight to end a tough May and swept the Reds behind Jayson Werth and a strong outing from Paul Maholm who sank his ERA around 1.20 points since May 1st. The Pirates started off hot with a lead-off triple by Andrew McCutchen and then an RBI groundout by Jamey Carroll who has pretty much solidified himself as the second basemen, the Pirates would score more 2 runs in the inning with a homerun by Werth and an RBI single by Ryan Doumit. The Pirates would have another 3 run inning off of Reds starter Edison Volquez in the 5th inning, Werth led off the inning with his 2nd homerun and then an RBI singles by Steve Pearce and Cabrera made it 6-0. But the Reds struck back in the 6th inning with a 2-run homerun by Jay Bruce and Jay Bruce would strike back again in the 7th inning with a solo homerun, his 2nd of the day, and an RBI single by Ramon Hernandez and it was all of a sudden 6-4. But Asdrubal Cabrera gave the Pirates a big insurance run with a solo homerun in the 8th inning to make it 7-4 which would be the final.

I will be doing a new segment called: 3 Cheers, 3 Jeers and 3 Tears
It is a segment on sportsnation, a good show on ESPN, and it will be based on things in the MLB in this game
3 Cheers means 3 good things :D
3 Tears means 3 sad things
3 Jeers means 3 things worth booing :|

Three Cheers

1 Cheer For Division Leaders - The Tigers, Athletics, Marlins, Dodgers and Rays all lead they divisions after not winning it last season and only the Marlins made the postseason last year out of that group

2 Cheers for Hanley Ramirez and Freddy Sanchez - They are the only 2 players to hit for the cycle this season, not to mention they are on division leading teams

3 Cheers for the Washington Nationals - After going 8-20 in April, they went 19-8 in May for the MLB best record for May

Three Tears

1 Tear for Aaron Harang - He leads the league with a 2.33 ERA with the Mariners, but is only 2-6, not very lucky

2 Tears for Felipe Paulino - He was put on the DL for the Astros and is out for 20 more days

3 Tears for the Houston Astros - Besides Paulino on the DL, the Astros are 18-37 with the worst record in the majors after going 62-100 last season

Three Jeers

1 Jeer for Khahil Greene - He has the worst average in the majors at .158 and has 1 homerun

2 Jeers for the Yankees - That 6.17 team ERA is the reason why they'll miss the postseason for the 3rd straight season

3 Jeers for Josh Fogg - He has the worst ERA in the majors at 12.7, but that 0-9 record isn't too pretty either for the Reds

Pirates May In Review

The Pirates started 0-5 to begin may and end 5-0 to end May en route to a 15-12 month which put the Pirates back on top in the NL Central. They got strong months out of Jayson Werth and Susumu Ikari, Ikari hit 6 homeruns in May and is hitting over .300. Aaron Cook rebounded from a poor beggining to May for a 4.32 ERA, Maholm got his ERA under 4 after a bad April and the rest is how it seemed in April. The bullpen is a pressing need still. Pat Neshek has recorded a 5.94 ERA and could be released soon but Huston Street rebounded to lower his ERA to 4.91. Asdrubal Cabrera fit in great with the Pirates, highering his average .20 points and hitting 2 homeruns in his short time here. But Mike Fontenot may have lost his job to the hot Jamey Carroll. Carroll has produced a .400 average with 18 RBI's in 70 at bats while Fontenot has 1 homerun, 10 RBI's and a .231 average in 154 at bats.

Garland Stifles Pirates To End 5-Game Winning Streak

June 1 -- In a rematch of last years NLDS, the NL leading Marlins came into Pittsburgh and ended the Pirates 5 game winning streak thanks to the great effort by Jon Garland, a free agent pickup in December. The Marlins scored 3 runs off of Anibal Sanchez in the 1st two innings, in the 1st inning Dan Uggla, the majors RBI leader drove in a run and then Wes Helms hit a 2-run double in the 2nd inning to go ahead 3-0. The Pirates showed some life late into the game, Jones started it was a 7th inning homerun and Ikari singled to right to drive in another run and make it 3-2. But thats all the Bucs could get against Jon Garland on this night, he went all nine innings in a complete game in impressive fashion to beat Anibal Sanchez.

Cabrera's Return To Cleveland A Good One As Pirates Breeze by in Interleague opener

June 4 -- The Pirates breezed by the Tribe in the interleague opener after coming here for the first time since new management took over in 2008. This game was more than a normal game as Asdrubal Cabrera came back to Cleveland whom he spent 2007-2012 with before getting traded and Ronny Cedeno played against his former team the Pirates whom he played with from 2008-2012, both have done well with their new teams and both had big days at the plate. Justin Masterson has been a nice story for Cleveland this season but it wasn't nice tonight. The Pirates scored 6 runs in the 2nd inning, first with a 2-run double by Cabrera, a 2-run double later by Ramon Vazquez and Garrett Jones added on with a 2-run homerun to make it 6-0. The game was not very close but when it was 11-3 in the 8th and Zach Duke on the mound, he couldn't get an out in the 8th inning after an RBI double by Travis Hafner and a 2-run homerun by Grady Sizemore and then it was a 5-run game at 11-6. But that would be the final in a win over a struggling Cleveland Indians team.

Werth and Cook Lead Pirates To Win Versus Royals

June 7 -- The Pirates have yet to play the Royals since new management began in 2008(lets just say thats when I started this log) and they won their 4th straight interleague game in the process. Eric Bedard has been a dissapointment for a lot of the season for Kansas City but he did well tonight. His only mistakes were to Jayson Werth in the 4th with an RBI double and another RBI double in the 6th inning. Aaron Cook was dominant as well though, the only run he allowed in 6 2/3 innings was a run scoring double play from Jose Guillen in the 7th inning. But in the 8th inning, with a runner on 2nd base and 2 outs, Huston Street came in to get a big strikeout of pinch hitter Yuniesky Betencourt to keep it a 2-1 game which would be held down in a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
