Ruggiano is glad that he gets at least a roster spot that didn't come after September Call-ups.

Pirates July In Review

This was an up and down month while the Pirates went 14-11 and had a terrible 7 game losing streak near the end of the month which was broken up with a good comeback against the last place Astros. The Pirates main stories was Robinzon Diaz going down for 33 days but he'll be back soon. But the Pirates did acquire RHP Homer Bailey for Travis Buck and also traded for Kevin Gregg and gave up another young outfielder in Lastings Millege in a deal that happened just this morning. The Pirates bullpen was subject in July though, Yate's ERA went all the way up to 4.88, Bautista's ERA went over 4, Neshek's ERA rose to 4.55 as well and thus Kevin Gregg was called upon. I will not post the stats for July but the main players whether it was bad or good were Sanchez(2.45 ERA), Karstens(5.45 ERA and risk of losing spot and being sent to AAA), Ikari(21 HR), Cedeno(.238 AVG and NO homeruns), Clement did well going 9-19 with 1 homerun in his chances so he may start once Diaz gets back and Street leads the league in saves with 30(in 33 chances). One other thing to look out for is McCutchen. He's hitting .339, leads the team in slugging percentahe despite having 11 homeruns and he is 41 for 41 in stolen base chances which would easily make him the fastest player in the majors.

sure but you'll have to remember yourself because its too confusing to put every player on the first post, especially with players leaving

so just remember your player and at some point I'll have to remember to change the 1st post

Dunn's Milestone Shot Leads Charge Over Pirates

August 3 -- The Nationals took two of 3 from the Pirates in a tough stretch for Pittsburgh in which they've gone 2-9. Anibal Sanchez took the hill today but they got all over him early with a 2-run double by new National Jorge Cantu and Adam Dunn hit his 350th homerun of his career, a 2-run shot for a 4-0 lead in the 1st inning. But luckily for the Nats, Jason Bergmann was on his game today with a no-hitter threw 4 2/3 innings and he pitched 7 2/3 strong innings. The only run the Pirates would get would be on an RBI single by McCutchen, one of only 4 hits for the Bucs in a frustrating game for Sanchez and the Pirates.

Pirates Aquire Gregg From Cubs

August 1 -- The Pirates have aquired RHP Kevin Gregg from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for OF Lastings Milledge. Gregg was a good set-up man this season for Chicago with a 2.45 ERA and the Pirates gave up Milledge who hit 2 homeruns and hit .267. Milledge had some problems with the Pirates beginning with his agent saying that he wanted to steal more bases and after not being able to start after Buck was traded, he wanted to be traded but Milledge still enjoyed his time with the Pirates and will be missed. To replace him, OF Justin Ruggiano will replace him and RHP Kevin Hart will be sent down to AAA to make room for Gregg.

So you're blaming this on ME, eh?

well maybe a little

but still it's a pretty good traded. I was looking for a good relief pitcher and milledge was a fit, I had some outfielders in AAA already anyways

Pirates Don't Treat Padres Well In Return to San Diego

August 8 -- The last time the Pirates went to San Diego was on the last day of the season way back in 2008 and they came back with their offense on track. The Pirates scored 3 runs in the 1st inning off of Shawn Hill who has had a great year for the Padres(3.44 ERA, even Jack Merluzzi said something about him being in the crop for pitching, something wierd) and they got it with a sac fly by Werth and a 2-run homerun by Jones made it 3-0. The Pirates also scored 3 more runs in the 2nd inning with a 2-run double by Mike Fontenot and an RBI double by Jayson Werth to lead 6-0. But the story of the day was Jeff Karstens who has struggled this season, especially after coming off the DL(5.13 ERA). He had a no-hitter through 5.1 innings and it was broken up by Henry Blanco and the only run he would allow all night would be from an RBI double by Kouzmanoff in 7 2/3 innings of work. The Padres offense didn't do much in Petco Park today but they had a mini rally in the 9th with a homerun by Brian Giles but Gregg shut the door for the Pirates to end it.

Volquez Wins Pitcher's Duel As Rolen's Homerun Stands

August 14 -- The Pirates were on the wrong side of a pitcher's duel in Cincinnati between Edison Volquez and Aaron Cook. The offense was quiet for the whole game but the Red's took what seemed like an insurmountable lead in the 7th inning when Scott Rolen came through with a 3-run homerun to center field to lead it 3-0. Edison Volquez kept the Pirates off the board until with a 1 out in the 9th inning, Garrett Jones hit an opposite field homerun to left to make it 3-2 after his 2-run shot but the Pirates came up short as Volquez went all the way.

August 14 -- Diaz to Return off DL but will stay in AAA
The Pirates had a decision to make on their backup catching situation and the Pirates decided on C/1B Jeff Clement to stay on the roster after Robinzon Diaz returned off the DL. Clement has hit .424 with 1 homerun in 24 at bats and Diaz hit 1 homerun and hit .223 in 91 at bats so Clement will stay on the roster for maybe the postseason as well.

Ikari Caps 2-Out Magic in 9th

August 17 -- The Pirates managed to prevent a sweep at home with some 2-out magic in the 9th inning. Maholm and the Padres spot starter Bikowski matched pitch by pitch until the 6th inning when Maholm let up back to back homerun to Chris Burke and Adrian Gonzalez to make it 2-0 San Diego. But the Pirates came roaring back in the 6th inning with 3 runs and the go-ahead run with an RBI single by Pearce. But Tyler Yates could'nt hold that lead as he continues to struggle(5.13 ERA) after an RBI single by Edgar Gonzalez and an RBI double by pinch hitter Dan Johnson. The Pirates tied it in the 7th inning and it stayed tied until the 9th inning when Henry Blanco singled to center field off of Bautista to take the 9th inning lead. The Pirates had a runner on 2nd and base and 2 outs in the 9th when it looked over, Jayson Werth tied the game with an RBI double to center field and the next batter Ikari blooped the game winner into center field to prevent the sweep with the miracle.

MLB Milestone Minute - Career Numbers
Image
Well since we're here in 2011, there have been some hall of fame numbers such as 3,000 hits, 500 homeruns, 3000 strikeouts, and 600 homeruns. We have this topic here because Derek Jeter has recently gotten hit number 3000(he has exactly that now) which is just another thing to put in his hall of fame record, his teamate Alex Rodriguez has 2,985 and is 15 away from 3000, they will try to both get 3000 hits in the same season. A-Rod also has 646 career homeruns making him 2nd on the active players list behind Ken Griffey Jr. who now has 3,088 hits as he also got number 3000 this season. Chipper Jones, Delgado, and Sheffield are all on the 500 hit list with Giambi only 5 away(he's also on the yankees after resigning with them) and Thome and Ramirez joined the 600 homerun club. Ramirez is also close to 3000 hits with 2,885 but that will likely come next year but Ivan Rodrigez(2,875), Vizquez(2,871) and Sheffield(2,786) are all in striking distance but none of them are starters anymore) and the other closest besides Giambi to 500 homeruns is Pujols(454). As for pitching there is a long way for 300 wins for anyone, the closer is Pettite with 232 and for 3000 strikeouts, Johan Santana is only 31 and has 2132 strikeouts and Javier Vazquez is the closest with 2,343 but is 34 years old with a good shot.

Josh Johnson Sinks Struggling Pirates

August 22 -- The Pirates have not played in Landshark Stadium for awhile and they lost their 2nd straight game and this one thanks to the Marlins ace. The Pirates got on the board quickly with a solo homerun from Jayson Werth in the 1st inning but Florida took over from there with a RBI singles by Wes Helms and even Josh Johnson in the 4th and the Fish scored again with a 2-run homerun in the 7th by rising star Cameron Maybin(I created him). Pittsburgh got what at that moment was a big 2-run double by Mike Fontenot in the 8th inning with 2 outs to make it close at 4-3 but fireballer Matt Lindstrom made sure of no rally in the 9th for the Marlins win which pushed the red hot Brewers to within 3 games of the Pirates in the Central.
