Broken Collarbone sends Diaz to DL for 33 Days
The Pirates got bad news yesterday from the doctors as they announced that catcher Robinzon Diaz will be out for 33 days will a broken collarbone after colliding against the backstop against the Diamondbacks and being forced to leave the game. C/1B Jeff Clement will be called up from AAA Indianapolis while Diaz tries to recover from a tough injury. Clement spent '08-'10 as the Pirates backup catcher and for a time as a catcher/firstbasemen.

Doumit would like to move up in the batting order. Glanville wants all out stamina practice. Finally, Milledge wants a trade.

I could think about moving Doumit up one spot. I just wanted to have the leftie-righty combos so it would be:
Jones - Left
Pearce - Right
Doumit - Switch
Cedeno - Right

so that now I dont have a righty and a righty and lefty in a lefty back to back so it makes it easier late in games with bullpen matchups

as for Milledge, I'll worry about him next year. I'm sure he wants to be on a winning team that has a great chance of being in the playoffs

Milledge just wants to be on a competent team where he can at least be a starter. Doumit is happy with his move up in the order. He feels that he can get lots more RBIs now.

----------------------ImageAmerican League All-Stars @ National League All-StarsImage

------------------------------------------------------------------Image

Dodgers Stadium -- The National League has finally won the all-star game for the first time since 1996, a 14 year drought of wins for the National League All-Stars but its all over now in the 4-3 win over the American League All-Stars. Houston's Roy Oswalt and Oakland's Justin Duchscherer both got the starting nods in the all-star game at Dodgers Stadium and they didn't disappoint both striking out 5 and combining for only 1 run allowed. The NL got their first run on a homerun by Carlos Beltran and in the 4th inning Albert Pujols, the MLB homerun leader with 31, let one loose to make it 2-0. But in the 7th inning it looked like one of those National League losses in the making when Carlos Quentin hit a 3-run homerun off of Billy Wagner with 2 outs to put the AL up 3-2. But the National League All-Stars tied the game with an RBI single by Milton Bradley and an RBI single by Ricky Weeks to put the NL on top 4-3. But there was a scary moment in the 9th inning. The Red's Fransisco Cordero faced Jason Bay with 2 outs and the bases loaded but managed to get him to ground back to him to end the ball game and for the first time ever and gave Cordero the save after getting the loss in last years all star game but more importantly, give the National League Champion home field advantage in the World Series. For Pirates players, Ryan Doumit went 0-1 but got the winning run over in the 7th and Sanchez pitched a perfect 8th inning.

Jones Plays Hero In Wild 8th Inning Rally

July 22 -- The Pirates returned after the All-Star break and began the unofficial 2nd half with a comeback win over the Mets. The Mets got all over Karstens in the 4th inning with a 2-run homerun by Jeff Francouer who is only hitting .200 and a 2-run single by Luis Castillo. Karstens has not been the same since returning to the DL with his ERA around 5.30 and he had to leave the game again with elbow pains which questions his abilities to throw alot of pitches in a game. The wild part of the game was in the 8th inning. The Pirates got their first run on a bloop single by McCutchen and scored another to make it 4-2 on a RBI groundout. But Garrett Jones turned the game around against JJ Putz in the 8th with 2 outs and a 3-run homerun to center field to give the Bucs a 5-4 lead which would be held onto with another save by Huston Street to complete the 5-run 8th inning comeback.

Carp's Gem Helps Cards sweep 2 game set with Pirates

July 24 -- The Cardinals completed a 2 game sweep over the Pirates thanks to Pujols and Glaus who have been Pirates killer for what seems like forever. Albert Pujols hit his major league leader 35th homerun in the 1st inning, a 2-run shot, off of Maholm for a 2-0 lead in the 1st inning. The Pirates scored their first, and only, run in the 5th inning with an RBI double by Andrew McCutchen off of Carpenter who was great tonite getting his 10th win. The horror months of June and July have haunted Neshek and he struggled giving up a homerun to Glaus in the 7th inning and later an RBI single by Ryan Ludwick to get his ERA up to 4.74. The Cardinals managed to gain 2 games in this 2-game set but are still pretty far behind down by 7 games in the Central

Pirates End Slide With Comeback and Walk-Off

July 31 -- The Pirates broke a long 7 game losing streak after being swept in 2 games by the Cardinals, got swept in Arizona and were close to being swept by the worst team in the majors in the Astros. The Astros, with their bad offense and a number 4 hitter who has 4 homeruns and a .209 average, struck first with a 3-run homerun off of Kazuo Matsui in the 4th inning to lead 3-0. The Pirates trailed going into the 7th inning but rallied to back with a sac fly by McCutchen and a 2-out game tying 2 run homerun from Mike Fontenot. But the 9th inning was tough, with the runner going and 1 out in the 9th for Houston, there was a grounder hit to Fontenot who missed the ball so it was 1st and 2nd and noone out and then Fontenot was unable to throw the go-ahead run out at home so it was 4-3 and for Fontenot, a hero a few innings ago to what could've been the goat in tonights game. But that didn't happen. The Pirates too a roll of the dice and sent out pinch hitter Jeff Clement with a guy on 1st base and he has done well going 8-18 this season and he delievered with a game tying double off of the guy replacing Valverde after he signed elsewhere in Geoff Geary. McCutchen ends up the hero tonite with a walk-off single with 1 out in the 9th. This is also the last day for trades in the MLB and it is heard that the Pirates might have put up a last moment trade that could be accepted in a few days.

Pirates Aquire Gregg From Cubs
Image
August 1 -- The Pirates have aquired RHP Kevin Gregg from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for OF Lastings Milledge. Gregg was a good set-up man this season for Chicago with a 2.45 ERA and the Pirates gave up Milledge who hit 2 homeruns and hit .267. Milledge had some problems with the Pirates beginning with his agent saying that he wanted to steal more bases and after not being able to start after Buck was traded, he wanted to be traded but Milledge still enjoyed his time with the Pirates and will be missed. To replace him, OF Justin Ruggiano will replace him and RHP Kevin Hart will be sent down to AAA to make room for Gregg.
