September 7th -- The Pirates struggles at Wrigley continue after a big hit from Milton Bradley. The Pirates scored first off of 19 game loser Tom Gorzallany. The Pirate scored first on a line drive RBI double for Steve Pearce and the second run of the 4th inning scored on an RBI groundout by Ryan Doumit. The biggest and only key hit of the game came off the bat of Bradley in the 5th when with the bases loaded, he unloaded to left for the grand slam homerun to mkae it 4-2. The Pirates would get 2 runners on in the 9th and Jones hit one almost out and to the warning track to end the game and leave the Bucs with a 4-2 loss.

September 13 -- The Pirates won a wild won of the Brewers in a game that could've been bad. The Brewers got all over Duke in the 2nd with 4 straight hits to start the inning which led to 3 early runs. But the Pirates got a clutch hit from an unlikely source in the bottom of the 2nd when Zach Duke hit his 1st homerun of the year to tie the game at 3 after this 3 run homerun. Braun and the Brewers took the lead on a solo shot in the 3rd but another 3-run homerun for the Pirates, this one from Garrett Jones made it 6-4 Pirates. Hanrahan had a rough 9th inning but was not helped with an error by Amezaga and Vazquez in the inning and Jody Gerut ended up with the game tying 2 out, 2 run double in the 9th to tie the game. But in the end the Pirates went home happy when Jayson Werth homered to deep left for the walk-off win and the biggest hit for Werth as a Pirate.

September 19 -- The Pirates snapped a 3 game winning streak over the best team in baseball. The Pirates seemed ready for a wild card spot and are falling out of the division but they went to work today. The Pirates scored first in the first with an rbi double by Mike Fontenot and Brain Bixler, getting his first start of the year, would break an 0-4 skid to start his September call-up with a homerun for a 2-0 lead. The Mets would try to rally with a 5th inning rbi single by Castillo. Ikari made it 3-1 in the 8th with a homerun and Beltran came right back and homered to make it a 1 run game. But Hanrahan would have no problem taking care of Cora, Schneider and Pagan in the 9th for a win against the MLB best Mets at Shea Stadium on a day where Sanchez was his 18th game of the season.

September 21 -- The Pirates won today thanks to a big 6th inning at Cincy. The Reds took a 1st inning 1-0 lead with an RBI single by Joey Votto but the Reds got 3 more in the 5th inning capped by a 2 out, 2-run double by Brandon Phillips for an early 4-0 lead but that would not last long. The Pirates scored their first 2 runs of the game with a 2-run homerun by spot starter Jeff Clement, an RBI single by Mike Fontenot and the biggest hit, a 2-run double by Jayson Werth to give them a 5-4 lead. Hanrahan would get his 35th save of the season getting the dangerous Jay Bruce to hit into a game ending double play.

September 24 -- The Pirates got late offense to support a great effort, and somewhat lucky win for Anibal Sanchez. Sanchez was dominant this game but the combo of Randy Wells and Ryan Depmster was also able to shut down the Pirates for 8 innings. Sanchez was the star thought continuing his amazing year with 8 shutout innings and struck out double digits once again with 10 K's. But his 10th strikeout was able to strike out Lee with runners on 1st and 3rd and 2 outs in the 8th inning to keep it 0-0 but he also injured his arm during that throw and had to leave the game the next inning so he got his pitch just in time before the injury which is still uncertian. But he would'nt have to go out there for the 9th anyways as Jayson Werth came through again with an RBI single in the 9th but Ikari put it away with a 2-run homerun as well as he shows no sign of a sophmore clump. The Pirates now won 4 straight and are now 4 games behind the Cardinals for the division and 5 ahead of the Phillies in the wild card

September 27 -- They did it! After coming so close to a playoff game last year the Pirates have officially won the NL Wild Card after taking a 5 game lead over the Phillies with 4 games to go to elimate the Philliesp playoff chances and the Pirates are back in the postseason for the first time since 1992. The Pirates have a chance at catching the Cardinlls but that looks impossible with 4 games left and down by 4 games to St. Louis but a wild card title is enough for the Pirates. The Pirates won with another amazing pitching performance, this one by Duke who goes 8 innings of shutout ball against a bad offensive Reds team. The Pirates got runs in the 2nd and 9th innings by RBI singles by Cedeno and Werth respectivly for a 2-0 win and most importantly, a chance to play in the Fall Classic.

October 1 -- The Pirates ended the season right where it started but not with the same success in a 4-2 season closing loss. The Pirates scored a run in the 2nd and 6th inning, both from Ryan Doumit to take a 2-0 lead but Aaron Cook struggled badly in the 7th. Rookie 3B Jeroleum drove in a run with an RBI single to make it 2-1 and Kazuo Matsui would have the biggest hit with a 2-run single, the Astros would drive in another runs with a sac fly in the same inning for a 4-2 lead and a 4-2 win. The Pirates will be headed to postseason though after this, previews, stats and reviews coming up.

of course

these are the guys that have been taken

Zach Duke/Justin Ruggiano/Susumu Ikari: Dishnetkid
Kevin Hart/Ronny Cedeno/Carmen Pignatello: Gocubs
Ramon Vazquez: Chicubsfan
Paul Maholm: Me_and_lucy
Garrett Jones: baseballexpert
Andrew McCutchen/Travis Buck/Alfredo Amezaga: Longball
Ryan Doumit/Lastings Milledge/Ross Glanville: Powerprojr
Jeff Salazar: Cubsfan
Brian Bixler: mariners
Anibal Sanchez: me_and_lucy
Jayson Werth/Mike Fontenot: stevenjackson

sadly there are barely any players left because some guys have taken more than 1 guy which is tough to deal with and if someone has more than 2 players, then you can choose one of them just to be fair to anyone else who wants one

Pirates September In Review

The Pirates have finally ended this season but this time with no frustration. The Pirates only frustation of the month was going 15-13 while the Cardinals went 18-10 to win by 3 games but the Pirates will take a wild card spot but they will have to face the best team since 2008 by far in the Mets who are the defending champions and have been to the world series from '08-'09. Jeff Karstens will likely be the odd man out in the rotation but did lower his ERA to 4.15 and ended up 7-4 after a bad start. The Pirates were able to get a wild card spot thanks to amazing pitching with a 3.87 team ERA. They also got 30+ homeruns from Werth and 12 homeruns in the last 2 months of the year for Garrett Jones who had a dismal first half for the Bucs. The Pirates will trust Zach Duke with the first start this postseason as he has been their best pitcher from '08 to '10 but may give the ball to the best pitcher this season in Anibal Sanchez who led the mlb in wins and ERA.

NLDS Preview : New York Mets Vs Pittsburgh Pirates

The Pirates will definatly not have a cakewalk in the first round. They're facing a Mets team that has 3 division titles since 2008, 2 world series apperances out of 2 and 1 world series ring and blows everyone away when it comes to their record in their last 3 year. They were 102-60 this season atop of the NL East facing a Pirates team that had their first success in many years with 86 wins last year and now have a playoff spot with a 93-69 record this season. The most daunting thing with the Mets are their offense, an NL offense that hits at .288 with 968 runs in a season is unheard of but the Mets did it this season. Their problem is pitching. Their starters ERA ranges from 4.51 to 4.78 which is hardly good but Johan Santana is always a threat and he had the 4.51 ERA but recorded his worst ever season as a big leaguer. They have a good bullpen though with Billy Wagner and JJ Putz, former closers, setting up K-Rod who had a 3.86 ERA this season which wasn't like him. The series set-up has the Mets playing 3 straight games at home but if there are games 4 and 5 then the Pirates will play at home for 2 big games. This series won't be murder though, especially if good pitching beats good hitting. Below are tidbits to the series

New York Mets

Record : 102-60

Home : 54-27

Away : 48-33

968 Runs

4.65 ERA

Wins Leader : O.Perez(14)

ERA Leader : Santana(4.51)

Average : Wright(.336)

HR : Wright(40)

5-7 Vs PIT this Season

Pittsburgh Pirates

Record : 93-69

Home : 48-31

Away : 45-38

791 Runs

3.78 ERA

Wins Leader : Sanchez(19)

ERA Leader : Sanchez(2.69)

AVG : McCutchen(.317)

HR : Werth(32)

7-5 Vs NYM this Season
