Dodger Stadium -- The Pirates ended up splitting a 2 game set with LA after a 5-3 loss tonite. Manny Ramirez homered in the 1st to begin today's scoring. Garrett Jones hit his 7th homerun of the year in the 3rd to tie it up against Clayton Kershaw. The Dodgers scored a run in 4 straight innings but the Pirates would come back scoring once in the 5th and Pearce continued his beating of lefties by homering on a curveball on a 3-0 count to make it 3-4. Casey Blake homered in the 7th inning for an insurance run and Broxton was able to get Werth to hit into a double play to end the game.

PNC Park -- The Pirates won an important game as they avoided a sweep and are now 1-5 against the Cardinals so far. Khahil Greene homered in the 2nd inning to start the scoring but McCutchen would come back in the bottom half with an RBI single. Ronny Cedeno showed rare power with a solo homerun in the 5th and Travis Buck homered into right in the 6th for a 3-1 lead. Albert Pujols would homer in the 8th to make it a 1 run game but Maholm's gem and Hanrahan's shut down 9th preserved a much needed win over the Cardinals

Pirates July In Review

The Cardinals took an advantage of a 12-13 Pirates month to take a 2 game lead in first place. The Pirates went through the trade dealines without many needs except maybe the 5th starter spot. Hart has struggled with a 6.26 ERA but Karstens has a 5.27 ERA. Hart has shown some promise so he will get some more starts to evaluate him. The annual all-star game was held this year in San Fransisco and Zach Duke and Paul Maholm got the invite for the Bucs, the AL ended up winning with Josh Hamilton getting MVP honors for the game. The Pirates do have a lead in the wild card but they are only 1 game up on the hot Phillies.

PNC Park -- The Pirates won their first game of August and 2nd game of a 4 game set with the MLB best New York Mets. Gary Sheffield continues his nice season with a bomb to left to make it 1-0 on the homerun. Mike Fontenot got into one in the 3rd to give the Pirates a 3-1 lead with a 3-run homerun by "chicken little". The Mets rallied off of Zach Duke for 4 consectutive 2 out hits in the 6th inning to tie it at 3. Garrett Jones hit the game winner in the 7th inning with a 2 run homerun to make it 5-3 and the Pirates would go on to win 6-4 after Reyes homered with 2 outs in the 9th off of Hanrahan.

Nationals Park -- The Pirates complete an easy sweep over the NL East worst Nationals with a back and forth battle at Nationals Park. The Pirates scored twice in the 1st with an RBI double by Ikari and a RBI single by Garrett Jones. The Nationals got a huge hit from Ronnie Belliard down 3-1 in the 7th when he hit a 3 run homerun for a 4-3 lead off of Zach Duke. But Ikari and Jones struck again back to back homeruns for a 5-4 lead. But Ryan Zimmerman singled in a run off of Bradford with 2 outs in the 8th for another tie game. The game stayed tied into the 10th when Garrett Jones hit his 2nd homerun of the day and 6th in August for a 6-5 win and Hanrahan got his first back-to-back 30 save season despite early struggles this season.

PNC PARK -- The Pirates imploded late to the Cardinals to make the race closer with the Cards winning two out of three in Pittsburgh. The Cardinals scored first with back to back RBI singles in the 4th inning by Pujols and Holliday to make it 2-0 St Louis but Susumu Ikari extended his streak to 21 in the 5th with an RBI double and Garrett Jones and Doumit had RBI's in the 6th to give the Pirates a 3-2 lead. The Pirates bullpen imploded in the 8th though. Yadier Molina tied it at 3 with an RBI single off of Beimel and Ankiel singled to give the Cardinals a lead but the biggest blow came from Colby Rasmus who hit a 3 run homerun to make it 7-3 Cards which would be the final in this one. Neshek and Beimel struggled mightily, Beimel threw an inning and gave up 2 runs and Neshek who lowered his ERA to 3.74 earlier this week gave up 3 runs in 1.1 innings.

Turner Field -- The Pirates won the first game of the 3 game set to the Braves and it was a sloppy day for the catchers. The Braves scored 2 in the first off of Kevin Hart but one of those runs was because of a passed ball on Ryan Doumit which made it 2-0. Jones singled in a run in the 2nd to cut it to 2-1 but a huge play was with runners on 1st and 3rd where Cedeno tried to steal second but McCann threw it into center field to score a run and later score Cedeno which was all part of a 4 run second inning, McCann later made another throwing error to get McCutchen to 3rd base later in the game. Cedeno added a 2-run homerun in the 8th and a 2-run homerun by Fontenot in the 9th made it 8-3 and an error by Fontenot allowed another run to score in the 9th but that was it.

Say I was wondering:

1) Clients stats
2) Could you add the date to the games?

1.) Duke: 3.29 ERA, 10-3
Ikari: .279 AVG, 19 HR, 69 RBIs

2.) sure I can. That'll probably make it a little easier than counting the record to guess the date

August 31 - Pirates Decide on Karstens over Hart for Postseason

The Pirates have made their decision to choose Jeff Karstens over Kevin Hart in the postseason if the Pirates are to make it. Hart replaced Karstens mid season and Hart had a 5.60 ERA and Karstens spent time in the minors after a 5.30 ERA but he will be on the postseason roster if the Bucs make it that far. The August 31st dealine for players to be on the postseason rosters came and the Pirates chose to go with Karstens.

Pirates August in Review -- Pirates Ready for Stretch Run

The Pirates head into September in a good situation only 1 behind the Cardinals in the Central and 4 ahead of the Phillies for the wild card. The Pirates had alot going in a 16-11 August where Jones finnaly stepped up and hit 8 homeruns in that month for 15 homeruns and a .252 average on the season, Doumit got to 16 homeruns and is hovering around .300 and Jayson Werth has 27 homeruns to go along with the team leading 103 RBI's. Their major pitching contribution came from Anibal Sanchez who won NL pitcher of the month with a 5-0 record and a sparkling 1.50 ERA in August for a total of 16 wins and a 2.90 ERA, both lead the team. The Pirates will not face the Cardinals this month but will face the Phillies, who are 4 back in the wild card, 8 times this month. September 2nd -- The Phillies have won their 4th straight and have pulled to 3 back in the wild card after a 9th innning comeback. Ikari came through again in an RBI chance in the 5th inning for the first score of the game but nothing else happened til the 9th. Duke was working on a masterpiece and since Utley and Howard were due up, Duke stayed out there to face the lefties but that would be a bad idea as Utley singled to start it and Howard homered to give the Phillies a 2-1 9th inning lead. Ryan Doumit hit a pinch hit RBI single in the 9th but that wasn't enough as the Pirates fell to 1 behind the Cardinals in this back and forth NL Central battle.
