The Pirates were not able to ride homeruns to a win in a wild loss to the Cubs. Aramis Ramirez homered for 2 runs in the first and Jayson Werth did the same as he hit a 2 run shot in the first as well. The Pirates went on to have a 6-2 lead in the 4th thanks to a 3 run homerun from Ryan Doumit but thinks went downhill from there. The Cubs came to 6-5 at one point but Jayson Werth homered for the 2nd time today to make it 8-5. The Cubs didn't give up getting 3 runs off of the Pirates bullpen and 2 from Evan Meek. The Cubs took the lead in the 9th with a 2 run single by Geovanny Soto and former Pirates closer Matt Capps got his first save to put the Pirates 1 game behind the Cardinals in the Central.

Wow, you really seem to struggle against the Cubs this season, don't you? :D

I would've thought that my record was much worse but I'm 5-9 against them

For the 2nd straight year the Pirates will have a 3 game series to end June and a 3 game series in early July against the Twins as part as interleague. Today was a good young pitching matchup and the Pirates struck first with an RBI single by Garrett Jones. But Joe Mauer would tie it in the 4th with and RBI single and they would take the lead in the 5th with a run. Justin Morneau hit a 2 run homerun in the 6th which made it 4-1 at that point. The Pirates would rally in the 8th when McCutchen hit an RBI double to make it 4-2 and Fontenot would hit an RBI single for a one run game. Jayson Werth would then double near the top of the wall to make it 4-3 but he would be thrown out at 2nd base which would cost the Bucs. It got interesting in the 9th when Guerrier had to fill in for Joe Nathan. Doumit hit a high fly ball the the warning track in center field but it was playable for Gomez who dropped it on the run and it got Doumit to third with 1 out. The bases would be loaded later with 1 out and Milledge hit a shot to Morneau who tagged the runner going to 2nd and stepped on 1st to end a major threat.

PNC Park -- The Pirates won the final game of the month over Roy Oswalt and the Astros. The Pirates did what they do often and struck first with an RBI single by Werth and Doumit hit his 8th June homerun to make it 3-0 in the first. The Pirates went out to have a 5-0 lead when Ikari hit his 15th homerun. The Pirates led 7-3 in the 8th when Geoff Blum hit a 3 run, 2 out double to make it a 1 run game. Joel Hanrahan came in to get the 4 out save to preserve a 7-6 Pirates win in PNC Park.

Pirates June In Review -- Pirates Look Towards All-Star Break

The Pirates had their third straight good month after a 15-11 June. The Pirates got through interleague play going 9-7 against the likes of the Yankees, Mariners, Rangers and Twins twice. The Pirates were able to catch up to the Cardinals and hold a one game lead in the division and the 2nd best record in the National League. The offense surely came on in June as Cedeno caught fire and is now hitting over .270 with 4 homeruns, Jones got to his 6th homerun and is hitting in the .220's, Doumit got to 11 homeruns with 8 in June and Ikari now leads his team in homeruns with 15 longballs. The Pirates will finnaly face the Cardinals in July at Busch Stadium for a 3 game set. The All-Star game is set to be in San Fransisco and AT&T Park again, they had the all-star game in 2007 and are having it in 2010 which is very odd.

National League Central Standings

Pittsburgh Pirates : 50-31

St. Louis Cardinals : 49-32

Cincinatti Reds : 40-41

Milwaukee Brewers : 39-42

Chicago Cubs : 37-44

Houston Astros : 31-50

Coors Field -- The Pirates broke their 4 game losing streak with a Sunday night win at Coors Field. The Pirates got major contributions from Jayson Werth who homered in the 1st to make it 1-0. The Pirates would score again in the 7th with Clement's first homerun of the year to make it 2-0 but Brad Hawpe hit a 2 run homerun off of Anibal Sanchez in the bottom of the 7th for a 2-2 tie. Jayson Werth would get his 3rd hit of the day in the 8th with an RBI double which would be the game winner in a 3-2 win against the Rockies.

Busch Stadium -- The Pirates have been swept by the Cardinals, have fallen 2 games behind them, and have just faced their worst loss this season by a long shot. The Pirates had built up a 4-2 lead going into the 9th inning and Joel Hanrahan let up a leadoff homerun to Pujols to begin the 9th. Hanrahan retired Holliday and Green next but it went downhill. With 2 outs, DeRosa had a 2 strike single and pinch hitter Rick Ankiel singled as well. Troy Glaus homered to deep center to cap off an amazing comeback and a terrible Pirates loss. This raises the question of whether or not Hanrahan deserves to be the closer, he came in with a 4.56 ERA and it only got higher in this game after a 4 run 9th. Hanrahan's 2009 season appears to have been a fluke and he may have lost his closer job for this season.

Pirates Call Up Neshek

The Pirates didn't send down Hanrahan like they thought they would but instead made a different move. The Pirates today sent down struggling relief pitcher Evan Meek, who has a 4.95 ERA this season and called up RHP Pat Neshek. The Twins released Neshek in June and the Pirates picked him up. Neshek posted a 4.73 ERA this season with the Twins

AT&T Park -- The NL once again lost after a 3-1 lost in AT&T Park. The NL got to a 1-0 lead with a 6th inning homerun for Adrian Gonzalez. Josh Hamilton turned the game around after a 3-run homerun off of Fransisco Cordero in the 7th which made it 3-1 and it would be the final. Matt Cain started for the NL for his home team, the Giants and pitched 3 scoreless innings. For the Pirates, only Paul Maholm pitched and he pitched 1 1/3 innings and struck out all 4 in a great effort. The AL will have home field advantage in the world series 2010.
