The Pirates have won their 4th straight after a win over a team who has the opposite record as the Pirates. The Pirates got all over Felipe Paulino in the 1st when Travis Buck hit a 2 run double and Ikari drove in the 3rd run in the inning with a single but the Astros came back when down 4-1 in the 5th, Carlos Lee came off the bench with a 3 run homerun off of Aaron Cook to tie it. Ryan Doumit would drive in the go-ahead run in the 8th and Hanrahan would shut the door to end the month of May with a 5-4 win.

Pirates Month In Review - Cardinals take first Place

The Pirates were of course happy with a 16-12 month but they were not able to keep first, instead the Cardinals who went 20-8 in May now have first place and the best record in the majors. The Pirates got a few rebounds as Ronny Cedeno is now hitting over .200, Jones is around .200 but his power is still missing but Joel Hanrahan had a sparkling month gaining relief pitcher of the month honors getting 9 saves with a 0.90 ERA in May. The Pirates can pride theirself in pitching this year as their staff has posted a 3.21 this season but there is thought to be one more AAA move to be made and announced soon.

It doesn't really matter where in the order you pitch... Sometimes it's a big deal to get to be the opening day starter, but after that it doesn't really matter. You're number four starter can be your ace.

ImageBucs Call Up Hart and send down KarstensImage

Today the Pirates have called up RHP Kevin Hart from AAA Indianapolis and sent struggling Jeff Karstens down to AAA. Hart has been working on his control and stamina and will be given his first chance of 2009. After posting a sub 4.00 ERA last year, Karstens has a 5.47 ERA this year and will work down in AAA.

Draft Day 2010

The Pirates were not likely to get a Susumu Ikari from this draft but they did not get any huge prospect. The Pirates picked 22nd this round while Cleveland got the firts pick and the Pirates selected 19 year old catcher Julio Suarez and LHP Pitcher, Justin Walker. Suarez is intriguing as he is only 19 and has 5 star potential

Julio Suarez - C
F contact
F power(75)
G run speed
E arm
F fielding
Good Block
R/R

Justin Walker - P
C stamina
E control

Level 2 PALM
Level 3 FORK

Pirates Sign Free Agent Neshek for insurance

The Pirates have signed free agent Pat Neshek as an insurance policy.
The Twins released Pat Neshek earlier this year as he posted a 4.74 ERA out of the bullpen for the Twins.
The submarine throwing righty will report to AAA to learn to become a groundball pitcher and get back to old form. He will be the first player to be used in case of an injury to a relief pitcher.

The Pirates lost their first game of interleague due to a shutout thrown by LHP Jason Vargas. This was the first game that Jack Wilson has played his former team that he played his whole career with and it was also the return of Jeff Clement to his old home where he was part of the Wilson deal. Russell Branyan unleashed a monster shot in the 1st inning to make it 2-0 but that is all the Mariners would need as Jason Vargas would stifie the Bucs in a complete game shutout. Cook once again put out a good outing but had nothing to show for it as they lost 2-0 against the AL West leading Mariners.

PNC Park -- The Pirates offense has been slumping and did so today and were no hit by the Detroit Tigers. Sounds like an awful day right? not really. The Pirates got a run in the 4th when Carlos Guillen made an error, Werth stole 2nd and was moved to third on a bunt. Jeff Clement had an RBI groundout. The Pirates did not get a hit in the game but scored a run without a hit. Sanchez was dominant for Pittsburgh firing 8 strong innings with a season high 13 strikeouts. Gallaraga went 7 innings and Zumaya went 1 so it was a team no-hitter but still a 1-0 nothing loss.

winning while getting no-hit takes mad skills and this is the first time i've done it

I think that happened last year when the dodgers won 1-0 but got no-hit

That's so awesome, and I remember that from last year. Technically, it would only count if you were the away team, because then it would be a nine inning no hitter. When you're the home team and that happens, it's only eight innings.

NOOO

I had a no-hitter with Hart and I didn't score until with 2 outs in the 8th I scored 2 runs

so hart is 1 out away from a no-hitter, it was 1 ball and 2 strikes to granderson

He homers on a weak curveball  So the shutout and no-hitter go away

Rangers Ballpark In Arlington -- The Pirates continued their interleague surge today with help from the Texas air and hot bats. The Pirates came into today a game ahead of the Cardinals and are now 2 up on them after today's win and th Cardinal's loss. The Pirates started off hot scoring 5 runs in the first 5 innings with homeruns by McCutchen and 2 for Doumit who had a career night to remember. The Rangers fought back in the 7th when Nelson Cruz and Ian Kinsler hit back to back homeruns off of Aaron Cook, who pitched well tonite. Ryan Doumit hit his 3rd homerun of the day in the 8th and his big day was needed after a rough April and May. Elvis Andrus hit a 2 run double in the 8th, both runs off of Evan Meek who has struggled lately but Hanarahan was able to get the 4 out save for the 7-4 win over Texas.
