Pirates Month In Review - Pitching Leads the way as stars struggle

The Pirates cruised off to a 19-8 record in April and have a 1 game lead over the Cardinals. It was a suprising month for sure as key guys such as Cedeno, Jones, and Hanrahan have struggled. Jones does not have a homerun yet and is the only Pirates starter not to have one this year. Hanrahan's ERA is over 5 but is 9/9 for saves. Ikari has led the team with homeruns with 5 so far and Werth is hitting .330 but with only 3 homeruns. McCutchen has been steaming out of the gate with a .419 average but others such as Cedeno(.183 AVG) and Jones(.165 AVG) are trying to get hot soon. Pitching has been key this year though as they have a 3.17 ERA so far this year. Hanrahan has not had a good ERA(5.27) but has gotten the job done while Bradford(2.76), Bautista(1.62), Yates(1.35), Beimel(2.34) and Pignattielo(2.43) have gotten it done all month long. As for the rotation, Cook and Maholm haven't gotten much run support but have pitcher well, Cook with a 3.82 ERA with only a 1-2 record and Maholm with a 1-2 record and 4.18 ERA. Duke and Sanchez have been the leaders of the rotation so far as Duke has a 2-1 record and a 4.60 ERA and Sanchez has been dominating with a 2.00 ERA and a 4-0 record.

NL Central Standings

Pittsburgh Pirates | 19-8

St. Louis Cardinals | 18-9

Milwaukee Brewers | 13-14

Houston Astros | 11-16

Chicago Cubs | 11-16

Cininatti Reds | 10-17

The Pirates have won the first game of a three game set against the Brewers and it was the 1st time that Pittsburgh has gone to Miller Park since last years final series. The Pirates got off to a hot start with a leadoff homerun from Andrew McCutchen and a 4th inning homerun off of Chris Capuano for Jayson Werth. The Brewers finnally got on the board in the 6th but a great performance by Zach Duke preserved another win and another great outing for Pirates starting pitching.

The Pirates lost the first game of the season against the Giants on the nights premier pitching matchup which was Duke Vs Lincecum. The Pirates draw first blood in the 5th when Steve Pearce getting a spot start homered to beggining the inning but new Giant catcher Jason Kendall tied it in the 7th with an RBI single. The Giants would score the go-ahead run in the 9th when Aurilia hit a chopper to Fontenot who threw home but didn't get the runner in time. Lincecum pitched the whole way and pitched a complete game striking out 9 and allowing a run.

The Pirates continue their struggles at Wrigley and have lost their 4th game at Chicago this year on a walk-off. Steve Pearce was the offensive player in this one hitting 2 homeruns, the 2nd one game the Pirates a 3-1 lead at one point. The Pirates could not contain the Cubs in the 7th when Bradley hit a 2 run homerun which made it a 4-3 Cubs lead going into 9th. But with 2 outs, Ramon Vazquez became a pinch hit hero hitting a 2 out, pinch hit game tying homerun but his heroics would'nt last long as Ryan Theroit hit a walk-off single in the 9th with 1 out to win it for the Cubs who have now won their 5th straight.

unbelieveable

I just got swept by the Cubs(again)

and they won on a walkoff..........

With 2 outs and the winning run on third, a ground ball to Ikari WHO LETS IT GO THROUGH HIS LEGS!

My first walk-off error but this one just went through his legs

Wow, but you're still on the right track. Are you still in first even after that loss?

I haven't played them yet but they're good this year. With my record in most divisions I would be in first

I've always hated them, and now I hate them even more now that they have my favorite player (Matt Holliday), and he's doing well with them. Argh...
