The Pirates have reported into their warm spring training home of Arizona for another season of Pittsburgh Pirates baseball. Newly aquired Jason Werth and Aaron Cook are working on changes as Aaron Cook will try to learn a cutter and Jason Werth will try to work on becoming a left fielder. Susumu Ikari reported to his first ever spring training happy and in shape and has changed his batting stance to a closed stance which looks like it could very much help him

I'll represent Werth and give up Yates.

National League Central Preview

Image Milwaukee Brewers (87-76, 1st in NL Central in 2009)
The Brewers were able to take advantage of a Cardinals, Pirates and Astros fall-apart to win the Central on the 2nd to last day of the season. The Brewers lost 2 key componets in gold glove center fielder Mike Cameron and steady catcher Jason Kendall which will make it very tough to repeat in 2010. Former Pirates Chris Duffy or Jody Gerut could possibly take over the center field job while newly aquired backstop Michael Barrett looks like the starting catcher but in the end, the Brewers will need another miracle to win the Central.

Additions: C- Michael Barrett

Losses: C- Jason Kendall , CF- Mike Cameron

Projected Record: 81-81

ImagePittsburgh Pirates (86-76 in 2009, T-2nd in NL Central)
The Pirates shocked alot of people in 2009 but a collapse ended what looked to be a division or wild card winner. The Pirates got 3 good players in the offseason such as Aaron Cook, Jason Werth in Chad Bradford which makes them look like the clear favorite in 2010. One problem is how can their bullpen repeat again? It was outstanding last year but can Hanrahan continue the magic or will the bullpen and their all-star closer fall is the question

Additions: RF- Jason Werth, SP- Aaron Cook, RP- Chad Bradford

Losses: RP- Fernando Hernandez

Projected Record: 89-73

ImageSt. Louis Cardinals (86-76 Record in 2009, T-2nd in NL Central)
The Cardinals fell apart and thats just about the story of the NL Central in 2009. The Cardinals only made one move in the offseason and that was resigning SS Khahil Greene who is a big part of the club. The Cardinals go into the season with the same sluggers like Holliday, DeRosa, Rasmus, and of course the great Albert Pujols. Backed by a strong rotation led by the finnally healthy Chris Carpenter, the Cardinals can make a run.

Additons: SS- Khahil Greene(resigned)

Losses: none

Projected record: 92-70

Image Houston Astros (83-79, 4th in NL Central)
The Astros were the 3rd team to fall apart and there collapse was epic, they once had a 5 game division league as late as August and that went away fast and their record went away fast too. They lost all-star Miguel Tejeda and did not aquire anyone in the offseason either so Geoff Blum looks like the starting SS which might not end well. The Astros are just about the same team except older and could possible finish in last.

Additions: None

Losses: SS- Miguel Tejeda

Projected record: 73-89

ImageCincinatti Reds (82-80, 5th in NL Central)
For a team that finished 5th, the Reds failed to do anything this offseason and theres not much to say about this team. In 2009 they finished in 5th after being in 6th for most of the year until a good September. They host a slew of young players but you can expect another 4th, 5th or 6th place in the division for the Reds

Additions: None

Losses: None

Projected Record: 67-95

ImageChicago Cubs (81-81, Last in NL Central)
The Cubs were a very dissapointing team in a winable division but an 81-81 record usually doesn't put you in last. The Cubs didn't lose anyone in the offseason but got talented CF Mike Cameron to sure up the outfield. he Cubs can be a suprise team this year and have a chance to make a run in a winnable division

Additions: CF- Mike Cameron

Losses: None

Projected Record: 87-75

It's Jayson, not Jason.

Nice preview, I really need to do some work if I want my log to be as good as yours. (Any of yours, really)

I'll be Bradford's agent.

McCutchen's offseason grade: C+/B-
"We acquired a good pitcher in Cook and a decent one in Bradford so our pitching should be able to repeat last season's success this year.
Werth is a good improvement over Milledge, so now we probably have one of the best outfields in the league.
However our infield still is a little bit shaky, and I was still hoping that we could have acquired a top tier infielder to bolster the lineup." - Andrew McCutchen (does not reflect agent's opinions 8) )

Just a question, what are Fontenot and Cedeno's ratings?

Cedeno: E, E, B, B, B, B and I remember that he has timely whiff and gd bunt but I don't remember much else, he's now one of the best defensive shortstops in the game and trying to get his arm to A

Fonenot: D cont, C power, D run, and a D and F somewhere in there for arm and fielding

that's all I remember off the top of my head

Since it will be awhile to play power pros(tv obssesed dad and sister!)
So I'll just make predictions on division winners while I wait

AL East
Image
The Red Sox resigned Beckett and signed Sabathia as well to give them a great rotation, their offense can compete too.
The Yankees losing Sabathia will also hurt their rotation and the fact that he went to the Red Sox doesn't help.

AL Central
Image
The White Sox didn't make any offseason moves but they've been the best AL team over the last 2 years thanks to a rotation led by Jake Peavy and Mark Buehrle

AL West
Image
The Angels will prevail this time and not lose out to the division with the 82-80 A's. The Athletics resigned Duchscherer which was huge but the Anegls have a good ballclub and resigned Figgins while also getting Tim Hudson.

NL East
Image
I'm gonna go on a thread and take the Marlins. They have a good young rotation and signed Carlos Delgado who was a huge factor for the Mets in the past years. They also have Hanley Ramirez, Hermida, Uggla, Cantu and now Delgado and maybe Nick Johnson fits somewhere in the outfield

NL Central
Image
In a weak division where no team won more than 87 games last year, the Pirates have a chance to finnally win it. They signed a front of the rotation starter in Cook, a veteran reliable reliever which the Pirates have lacked and Jayson Werth who beats up on left handed pitching, something the Pirates lacked was a right handed power hitter

NL West
Image
The Dodgers will likely be the favorite thanks to their solid pitching and Manny to help out the young offense such as Martin, Ethier, Kemp and Loney. The only offseason move they made was signing Brian Roberts

Potential Suprise Team
Image
They were actually in first when September came but were unable to hold on. They lost Roberts in the offseason but got old friend Miguel Tejeda back and signed Freddy Sanchez who has hit over .300 and hit 32 combined homeruns in the last 2 seasons.

nice preview!
any lineup changes you need us to know about?
also, for spring training, mike fontenot would like to attempt to learn either of these (your choice):
contact hitter
intimidator

if you don't want to, just make him practice contact.
