Ohlendorf demands a spot in the starting rotation. He has the make-up of an all-star caliber player, but Pittsburgh management is wasting his potential.

Opps, my bad. I was out most of the other day. Sanchez wants to work on his change up and Macholm wants to be opening day starter.

McCutchen suggests that some pitchers learn a few new pitches.

Image Pirates going into 2009 with same faces Image

After a 70-92 season, the Pirates look to get over .500 for the first time since 1992. The Pirates come into the season with new faces but they seem improved according to the players such as Paul Maholm:

Quote:
" I feel like through practice we've gotten better and healthier. Delywn(Young) is looking great and looks faster than ever(C run speed), Jeff Clement is taking a good step and trying new positions(1B) and our pitching was good last year, we had what? a 4.33 team ERA last year? That's good, it's about what the offense can do and it has some promise. " - Paul Maholm

The Pirates begin the season with 2008 NL Central Division champion St. Louis Cardinals and only play the Brewers, Cardinals and Reds during April for schedule problems. As part of interleague, the Bucs have to travel to Fenway to play the red sox as their biggest trip in interleague but will also play the Atheltics, Rangers and the Twins for 2 series(one in July).

Rookie of the Year Andrew McCutchen also talked to the media about the offense and what they have to do in 2009:

Quote:
" We have to find ways to score runs. With the pitching we have that had a good ERA last year(4.33), we need to score runs any way we can. We need to bunt, steal, hit and run, do whatever to score runs and guys like Garrett(Jones) and Ryan(Doumit) can drive them in. It's not impossible to win this diviosion, the leader had 85 wins last year. Lets just see " - Andrew McCutchen

Paul Maholm has also been named the starter for the 2009 opening against the Cardinals at PNC Park

Duke is very happy in being the second man in the rotation. Justin Ruggiano would also like to inform you that he wants to be the first person to call up once an outfielder is struglling during the year. He would be very angry if you did not do so.

In the offseason it is almost impossible to make any decent trades. You could offer CC Sabathia for a no-name guy with E's and F's and it will still be one star. After the beginning of the year, (I think) you can trade again.

So in other words, try trading for Jayson Werth or Cody Ross after the season begins.

Today was not a very good opening to the 162 day year as the Pirates were shutout by Chris Carpenter and the Cardinals. It looked bad at the beggining where the Cardinals got 3 straight hits to start the game and had 5 hits in the 1st but luckily the Pirates got out of it with 2 runs but those 2 runs is what would be enough for Carpenter, Flores and Franklin to shutout the Pirates on opening day in PNC Park.

It is the easiest to make trades near the dateline or when the player you want is slumping.

What!?!? Aaron ******* Boone retired? Wow, I usually never see him do that, I think I calculated him retiring only about 13% after the first year. How old was he?

He kind of suprised me too but i've noticed that there is a much higher retiring rate when the player is old of course but also not starting for the team which was Aaron ******* Boones case

he was 35 years old which is still pretty young
