Anybody here wrestle? I could use some help. Even if you don't, you might still be able to help me. Yesterday, we wrestled off and i made varsity. Today, a kid that has been wrestling for 6 years (this is only my second year), who had missed practice yesterday, came and beat me today. I'm mad. Really mad. I earned that spot, and he took it away. don't go thinking I'm an ego maniac or anything, he's better. I want our team to win. But this kid is a real jerk. The type everybody likes, (including girls 8) ) but picks on people that aren't as popular (aka me  ). You know the type. The thing is, he doesn't show up a lot, and isn't very resilient to injury (think Durability 2  ), so i feel he's cheating me a little. The problem is, i just know I'm not gonna be able to beat him this year. I'll get JV matches, but I'll have to share those. Is it wrong to hope he gets hurt or doesn't show up? Is it wrong to kinda almost try to hurt him a little during practice? His strong, but again, not durable. (plastic cannon, stronger than glass, but still weak). Be aware, my coach is a cop, so i could get in a lot of trouble if it's not stealthy. Thanks for any help.

Yeah it's definetely wrong, instead of trying to injure him you should focus on improving yourself. He may not put in as many hours now but if he's any good then I doubt he's been sitting around doing nothing during those 6 years.

I know it's a little cliche and that this'll sound like something straight out of a cartoon but don't give up so easily. What makes you say you can't beat him this year? with hard work and application I don't see why you couldn't. Hit the gym after practice, do what you can at home and if he's become lazy then you should be able to overtake him, or at least one of the other guys. If not then at least you've put yourself in a substantially better position for next year.

thanks captian, i'll try that. The only problem about next year is that we'll be in high school, and freshman varsity is very rare. (i'm nowhere near that good, and this kid really isn't either) I'll try my best, though. Any other opinions are still welcome.

He's better than you, and he beat you - use that as motivation to pump yourself up while training. Push yourself just far enough over the edge, and you'll beat him. Especially if he is as good as you say he is, he'll probably slack off, and you'll be there ready to kick his butt. :)

And if you have to fight him or someone else, always go into the fight with a posistive attitude. It maybe corny, but it works. Just think "I'm going to win, I'm going to win."

Well, captain took the words off my mind
But I'll give you one advice
Get to know the guy, have some practice together, and maybe you guys can point each other's weaknesses. He could help you, after all he's more experienced
That way both gets the benefit, unless the guy refuses to cooperate, Cap got it right
After all, sports is about sportsmanship, and effort to win (without cheating of course). It's just the matter of who wants to win more
Also, practice makes perfect, so do your best in each practice

Bingo. How do you think the Patriots went 16-0 after being proven that they cheated? By cheating again? Maybe  , but most likely not. They used the motivation of people thinking they can't win without cheating, and they did good. Do NOT try to hurt him. It's just wrestling, it's not that important. The consequences could be worse if you try to hurt him, as you know. Just my two cents, but I hope this helps.

You really like that two cents phrase, don't you apple?
Anyway, i feel GREAT! I just went out for a 15 minute jog (to make up for what i missed wrestling the kid today, [there were a couple of matches in front of us]) did a seal drag, a crab walk. and an army crawl across my first floor, and i tried to jump rope, but the only jump rope i found in our house was a kid one that didn't work for me, so i just jumped up and down in place doing jump-rope motions. If i keep working, i might have a shot!

Good job! Keep working at it, and soon you'll be as good, if not better than him! Keep working at it!

There are also other people from your coach to other wrestlers that can show you some skills. Alot of wrestling is power and physique but most is skill and leverage. If you work hard and get some good advice you can improve. Watch videos from anywhere you can, ask people who know what's up (sometimes bad advice is worse then no advice) and work hard. The key is gaining advantage. In wrestling you want to get the advantage so you can control him. If he is stronger become faster, if he is faster learn to predict his moves and counter. The best wrestlers I ever saw were not always the stronger person. You need speed and technique to gain the advantage and then with the advantage you will find it easier to manipulate him. If he is the one taking control find out how he is doing it and figure out how to counter his technique. Never say you can't beat him. Figure out why he beats you and make the adjustments. I have seen in many sports a weaker team or person win as they figured out how to play to their strengths while exposing the others weaknesses.

Remember this: You learn more from losing than winning. When you lose, you have been revealed to what your flaws are. Try things out. If you lose, don't feel bad. You have not lost; you have simply found a way that doesn't work. Basically cleaning up from what hockeyrama said.

thanks guys. i just wrestled a JV match today. Our team lo9st 49-48   but i won my match. I pinned the guy twice, and the ref actually called him pinned, but it was just after the buzzer, so i had to pin him in the second period

I almost beat the kid today! :D The final was 9-8, and i was winning 6-5 after the second period. I took top instead of bottom in the third, which i now regret doing. After some back and forth, he ended up on top. With 9 seconds left, the match stopped because of out-of-bounds, and i tried so hard to stand up, but i couldn't. sorry if this doesn't make any sense, it won't if you don't wrestle.
