Anyone hear anything about this? Mets sign K-Rod to a 3-year $37 million deal with some other stuff thrown in, like performance bonuses, and a 4th year option for $14 million. The Mets have really needed a closer since they've had no one to rely on in the 9th inning.

Kinda big news for me since I'm a Phillies fan.

I think the Mets will still need to make some deals to be a big contender, I just don't think K-Rod, as the only free agent signing for the Mets I've heard about, can push the team to the playoffs.

What do you guys think about it?

Not a huge fan of K-Rod but there's no doubt he's a good closer and exactly what the Mets needed, their bullpen has been lacking and while I would have had them for pennant contenders anyway this is a great boost though I don't think a closer alone will fix their bullpen problem.

Yes i also believe they need another OF as well who can hit for power they need more pop in their bats. Abreu or Ibanez look nice for them no matter how much i hate the Mets

The big cities like New York and Boston, etc. are always big-name free agent minded, huh? Wouldn't it be smarter for them to build a bullpen of young, CHEAP, consistent relievers BEFORE they're worth $12 million a year? For example, the Tampa Bay Rays and the Philadelphia Phillies, the two World Series teams, had maybe one or two big name relievers on their roster, and Lidge came from a trade. If I were Omar Minaya, I would've been going for Juan Cruz, who struck out 12 batters per 9 innings last year, and not K-Rod.

He's supposed to be out for the '09 season.

The Rays barely got anyone from FA. They got guys like Kazmir and Garza from trades, BJ Upton and Rocco Baldelli from the draft, and Hinske and Pena (i think, might have been trade) from FA.

Frankly, i don't think K-Rod even deserves a 5 year deal he wanted. He is not the top few closers. He blew 7 saves. He had given up lot of hits. If he can get 62 saves, it either; the Angels cant score more than 1-3 runs more than the opponent or the Angels have a bad bullpen. The number of easy saves he has is more than any closer in the MLB. He pitches more than 1 inning very very occasionally. Closers such as Mariano n Brad, they give up very little hits, good K's, and they pitch for more than 1 inning to earn the save many times. Jakin Soria is good too.

Yeah i think hes pretty overrated also his walks are absolutely crazy to be a closer but i mean Lidge also gives up alot of walks. The thing with the Mets is that i dont think their farm system has anybody who is really good trade bait, so minaya had no choice.

Well a lot of our relievers now have been developed through our own system or traded to us at an early stage in their careers. The guys we sign from elsewhere like Okajima don't get payed as much as K-Rod does though.

Prospects are all well and good but I suppose it's sometimes better to pay a higher wage for a more established player and get instant results, it's all a matter of finding a good balance. You're right about K-Rod though, considering what they needed they could have done better for the money.

Haha exactly why I don't like K-Rod, granted The Mets really needed a closer and K-Rod is a good player but my god did he have an over rated season. I'm sure he'll help out the Mets a lot in the 9th inning, he's just not as good as he's made out to be and in this case I think they could have gotten someone else and saved money to spend on people who can actually help out in those seventh and eight innings which they also have trouble with.
Also I give his arm another 2 years at the most.

Aaron Heilman is their set up, they are trying to get a swap with rockies for huston street. K-Rod is really overrated. He has the pitches (Slider, Curveball), but he doesnt do well with men on base.

I KNEW K-ROD WOULD GO TO THE METS! I PREDICTED IT! The odd thing is, K-Rod is with the Mets in my 2007 Cubs season mode, and after having to face him a few times, I thought to myself "K-Rod would be great with the Mets" and this was months ago that I thought this!

Rich Owner. He also has the option to leave after 3 years if his family doesn't like the east coast. :!:
