Taekwondo.
And i recently took a small break from it, to get into school w/o the hassle.
How long did it take to get yours?

Hey nice. I have a Black belt in Taekwondo also, and am currently working on my blue belt in Ju-jitsu. How did you get your black belt so young? I was 14 when I started taekwondo, and I was ready for my black belt at 16.5, but had to wait until I was 18 to take my Black Belt test, since my school didnt give out full black belts to under 18 years old. We had a red over black (jr. Black belt) until we turned 18, then were allowed to take our full black belt test.

I used to resent having to wait, because in high school when people asked my rank, I always had to tell them I wasnt a black belt yet... but it did allow me to be fully prepared for my test, and to instruct once I did finally get my full black belt certificate. I think mostly the rule was to make sure all the black belt student/instructors were legal adults, so when we taught the younger students it was as an adult who is legally responsible ( well as responisble as an 18 year old can be I guess...)

I was planning on taking up Muy Thai this year, but I barely have the time to train my Ju-jitsu as it is, and I'm getting too old for the daily beatings I take in grappling practice, so I can hardly imagine how much of a beatdown Mui thai must be with all the shin and elbow strikes.

Anyways...sorry to derail the thread.

My advice to you Ian is always stand up for yourself, facing up to problems allows you to respect yourself, and others see that you are not one who lets themself be pushed around, so you will gain respect from others as well. A fight only lasts for a few minutes, and you only stay hurt for a little while if you lose, but the respect you gain for yourself and from others lasts forever.

We'll have to see what happened to Ian...
and I started when i was 9.
Technically it isn't that off topic because we ARE talking about fighting and self-defense...
