That can't be right, 541 triples? Either way, I doubt there is one better, but seeing Ty Cobb statistics, you'd doubt anyone another Centerfielde could compete either. I'll take a look.
Edit: Wow, there really is no competition. I went to a site that listed the top 50 secondbaseman and there career statsitics weren't there (althoug Hornsby was only third). Maybe its only because he played longer then them. The second best I thought was Joe Morgan with a 401 on base percentage (despite a 260 ish career average, very patient hitter). I'll give it another look tomorrow, (as its 12 and I'm staying up watching the rays), but for now I'd say its hornsby. I'll have a poll anyway but I'll give stats of the top 5 and then rank them tomorrow. I'll also compare the two catchers (bench and yogi) to see which is the starter, but thats a whole nother vote. Don't vote till you see the stats.

I agree with you on Ty cobb. And that's actually doubles but it's hard to tell because it won't space it for me.

No, I was just making a point about how you never know and there are guys who can compete. Ty Cobb, Joe Dimaggio and Willie Mayes are all going to be made and they are not going to be given any position. I think we should make Hendrickson as a pinch runner as well. Watching the Rays game too?

Yogi Bera versus Johnny Bench for starter. I would say that they are the same statistically. I am not going to say that one player is better based on 4 points. Their absolute numbers to me are too cose as well.

Since you didn't post fielding percentage I went to that and looked that up as well. At catcher 989 yogi, 990 bench. Still the same.

The stats that really are different to me are the K, BB, and AVG.
Bench walks more which you would think better eye, but Yogi strikeouts out wayyyyy less. Yogi has a better Average by far. So, Yogi has slightly better contact, and is able to put the ball in play (low stikeouts).

So, as a coach, I would rather have someone who can put the ball into play. So, I chose Yogi.

By the way, I'm a reds fan.

As a suggestion, use the code format for displaying statistics. You can align them as well. Makes it easier to display.

I wish I could find some home/away splits for the two but my hunch is that Yogi had a bit of advantage being a lefty in Yankee Stadium while Bench was stuck with spacious and symetrical Riverfront his entire career.

Bench for his defense is better than yogi.

Slightly, I think your just using that to justify your choice mate haha. .001/2 difference in fielding percentage isn't showing that he's really any better, there almost exactly the same. The same is true for most of the other stats, its just that Yogi consistently has slightly more in all of them. I also chose Yogi because I'm a little biased and because of his post-season success. No one has more world-series rings then Yogi does (and thats not even counting as a manager). Those are two very good points smiley and Lomb, I might be able to find some splits. How does the code work, is it like the wiki?
Edit: Here are Yogi's splits, there is barely any difference (he is ever so slightly better at home).
They are at the bottom of the screen, as are Benches. Bench's stats are noticably different and he is a decent amount better at home, but not overly so and porbably less so then the average player. Its just that for Yogi, nothing changes. I don't think this should effect your interpetation.
Bench stats are first, then Yogi.

Don't forget to put stats in context... Hornsby's monster seasons in the high-scoring 20's and 30's are worth just as much as seemingly average seasons in the 1900's and 1910's.

To a certain extent, but I wouldn't go that far. I'm all for Hornsby though. Yogi and Johnny Bench both played for teams that are talked about as some oft the best to ever play the game and at times long after the deadball era.

I think we need to stop arguing on roles and starters and just determine the players.

I agree, I'm changing the poll to second baseman as it officially ended and Yogi won 5-3. Yogi is the starter for the team. So for second baseman, we will have Rogers Hornsby, Jackie Robinson, Joe Morgan, Ryne Sandberg and Eddie Collens.

Commenting on your logic based on the number of years. If you use the same logic for number of games, then Hornsby leads Robinson on most stats.

Really? Either way he would. I am for Hornsby myself anyway, but I didn't realize. I'll take that whole passage out then. Its amazing how well you know your stuff Smiley, although I'm sure you just calculated that one now. One would have to be Autistic to memorize everyone's ratio and potential stats when compared to every prominent player.

Yes, I just calculated that right now using the ratio of games played. Although, I don't fault anyone for wanting Jackie over Hornsby. You like who you like!
