Very cool story.

You came face to face with competition that at the time dwarfed you but you kept playing. In time you dwarfed the competition, but it was because you never stopped playing that you were able to succeed the way you did. To me that's the sign of a winner. It's those that stop playing the game that never reach their potential. You can't always be the best but you can always be a winner. Sometimes it's the journey that means the most...

Thanks for sharing!

I never did give up even in high school. I remember one game, where we were getting beat like 15 to 0 with no hope of coming back. Everybody on (botthe team was giving a lackluster effort, while I was killing myself. On the last play that I played during the game tom of the sixth I believe), I ran to right field and caught a fly ball, which the right fielder didn't even make an effort to go and get. The coach yanked me out of the game and put someone else in. He told me that he didn't think it was fair that I was playing so hard when no one else on the team cared to even show up! (Probably didn't think this story would turn out this way; did you?)

I've got a newspaper article at home which always gives me the chills when I read it. The article is about the only time I ever got a home run in high school and we won the game! I never did play past high school, although my coach told me I probably could play for a division 2 school. I decided that studying was more important and more critical to my future, especially since I was going into Electrical Engineering.

Div 2 Baseball? Pretty good, but baseball comes 3rd. Family then School and Baseball.

therisingsun, I'm curious, did your coach make you run a lot for doing that or anything? Maybe it's just me, but I would probably of been like well since you like to run you can go run for the whole practice(or something along those lines). Not anything personal, but that's just how I would've handled it. But did your coach only talk to you about it, or did he punish you?

Funny you should mention that... I did mention it was the last game of the season so he really couldn't make me run laps anymore. I would have ran however many laps he asked of me and did it with a smile on my face though. This particular coach would make us run laps for any errors we made or for being struck out especially looking. I ran plenty of laps for him especially since he was the conditioning coach for basketball as well. He was one of my all-time favorite coaches.

Instead of punishing me my coach during an inauguration ceremony, for student body president/awards ceremony for lettermen, retold the story saying it was the most exciting moment he could remember during a baseball game. He also thanked me for being a good team member.

Remember most of the memorable stories, to the people telling them, are stories about things out of the norm. I wasn't good enough skill wise to start on many teams let alone disobey a coach. I got to play because I busted my butt for my teams and the coach. I lack coordination and have had to always rely on heart. I was the starting halfback on my varsity football team when I was the smallest and second slowest person on the team but I was All-League first team my senior year. Getting back to the subject my best baseball story wouldn't be how I would spend hours catching for teammates and stole a lot of bases because that was just the norm. It was when I did something albeit a bit selfish but out of character that it really stuck to me. I won a a few games stealing home on botched squeeze attempts but I was just doing what I was supposed to be doing so it was no big deal.

Sportsmanship had nothing to do with what I did.
Everyone just leave DrMario alone! Why do you need to keep bringing it up!?!?! :x
I did not say DrMario did anything. I simply stated that someone had lied, deceived, tricked, etc. an entire forum of people.

It doesn't matter the reasons that person did what they did and we can say it has nothing to do with sportsmanship, but sportsmanship is following the rules of etiquette. In a Forum such as MLB Power Pros, there are also rules of etiquette. People come here for help and to offer help to others. We come to share experiences we have had with a game we enjoy. Lying and misleading people who are simply looking for help is really lame.

LanceBerkman...
No one here wants to let DrMario hang out to dry. But you should be able to understand why it might take some people a while to get over what he did. "It takes a lifetime to earn someones respect but just a second to lose it." People who came on this forum seeking help were deceived and being angry about it is the correct emotion. One person can throw a wrench into the works of a very good forum. If people continue to spew lies on here it will change this really good forum into trash because people won't know what is the truth.

LanceBerkman, I appreciate your caring for others but at the moment you sound a bit like Chris Crocker on youtube yelling to, "LEAVE BRITNEY SPEARS ALONE!!!" Not everyone might have caught DrMario's heart felt apology.

DrMario, just don't come on leaving negative messages or trying to have someone else back you up. If you are cool you won't need to complain to the moderators to help you out. In time people will forget about what happened just chill for the time being. I started the thread so people could share their baseball stories, not so you could critique them. If you have a story to share by all means please do.

My best baseball story is in mario sluggers when I scored 9 runs in the last inning to overcome an 8 run deficit.

My only real life baseball story was when I slid into home plate safely and was called out. That's what you get when you let ANYONE be the umpire. He was calling strikes right under your chin.

Dude, why do you feel the need to make comments like that? Not cool...
Are you trying to make people upset? Don't trivialize other peoples stories.

I am not saying you are dense but some people out there are really dense... I don't remember anyone saying baseball was the first priority, in fact what was stated was that it wasn't. And when people say things like, "school comes first" educated people need not take it literally. I know you are an educated person DrMario, after all you are a Dr.... This is just a general statement.

We can argue anything so lets take what you said for example... Family then School and Baseball. Concerning your comment I could argue that family does not come first for you. If they did come first then everything you did would be for them. You would never make it to school and baseball on your list. In fact your list would stop right at family if family was the most important thing to you. The fact that there are other things you value means that family isn't the most important thing to you. If family were really the #1 thing then you would do anything and everything for them. The truth is that we are the most important things to ourselves. If that weren't the case we wouldn't be playing games or doing anything that is fun for ourselves.

We could go on and on about this but what is the point? Exactly... the point is that we don't need to make pointless comments. Lets just be cool.

Man I hear you about the umpires... Some of them really should be declared legally blind. Reminds me of one game when the exact same thing happened to a teammate of mine. So my buddy slides with his foot clearly crossing the plate, then the ball comes what had to be an entire second later and the catcher has to reach up then drop down for the tag. OUT!!!

That same game someone on the other team hit a ball that hit their gymnasium that must have been at least 450ft away and our pitcher asked me why I didn't catch it. The field area was about 310ft to left but there was no fence so you had to run out a homer.

i had one ump in a game that gave my team no calls, he had a strikezone the size of the point of a needle.

I already posted one, but here is another. This baseball story is a great memory for me, but may not be for others. I only hit two homeruns during any baseball games that I have every played. Once was during senior league/babe ruth ball when I was 15, and the other was during my 12th grade year of high school. Here is the posting in the local paper. I still get chills when I read it beacuse it was such a part of my life for 9 years. (To protect the innocent I will be using false names).

"Chief's blast rallies Tulips!"

The Tulips rallied from a 3-0 deficit as Chief hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning to lift the Tulips past visiting Kings 4-3 in boys' high school baseball Monday.
Chief was 2-for-3 to lead the Tulips (6-8) as they scored one in the fifth and three in the sixth after tailing 3-0 after 4 1/2.

It was a great feeling to hit the go ahead home run. My girlfriend was a ballgirl for the team at the time. The guys on the team joked with me about giving her the homerun ball. I told them it was for my mother, since she had come to all my games since I was 10. Good thing too, since my girlfriend dumped my butt the following summer. My mom still has the ball and it sits in the cabinet above the T.V. I reflect on that moment every now and again when I visit her. Those were the days when baseball was my life.

Now, my life is getting my 3 and 5 year old to tee-ball practice (at least it was this past summer)!

Bottom of the ninth... two outs full count, man on third, i drilled a single, drove him in got into play offs, then broke a finger.. :(

My other one is is was in practice, and the coach told me if i didn;t do good im off the team, my first " good " moment was when ( i play right field, center left catcher and second but mainly out field and catcher! ) i jumped for a ball way higher than me, it went off the tip of my glove, bounced off my head, then i bear handed it... pretty funny play..:)

first pitch i ever faced in little league, i got hit in the elbow.
i ended up with 2 HBPs and 3 BBs.
No hits, though, i had no power or contact, and i was waaay too patient.

In tournaments back when i was 10 or 12 or something, I had a deep fly ball to right, and i though it was gone, but hit the top of the fence and only got a single
