Rowell was a 3B in the Orioles' minor league system. They wanted to convert him to a pitcher but he didn't want to, and thus he was released recently.

Tsk tsk.

I'm gonna look at some more drafts soon and see what else I can find. btw, on that subject, it's hard to believe Mike Trout went 25th overall in the '09 draft.

Some stuff I found via Twitter:

Those were from MLB and NFL Memes, I believe.

:lol: Whenever someone wears a Rickie Weeks jersey, its tradition at my school that everyone asks them at least once; "What's in 23 Weeks?".

Happy Christmas Eve! Y'all need to stop complaining, snow isn't that bad. I can't imagine winter without it.

More stuff to share, if you feel like reading:

The Mets can thank David Dellucci for leaving the Phillies to go to Cleveland back in 2006 or so. His leaving led to the acquisition of Travis D'Arnaud as compensation, who would later be traded to Toronto for Roy Halladay then recently traded to the Mets for R.A. Dickey. That was all possible by David Dellucci. Huh.

Also, a good reason the Pirates haven't been contending is really missing on some draft picks, especially in the 2000s.

Bryan Bullington in 2002 was a complete bust, considering who they could have gotten: Joey Votto (steal at 2nd round, 44 overall), Jon Lester, Jon Broxton, Brian McCann, Denard Span, Granderson, Matt Cain, Prince, Greinke, Swisher, Hamels, B.J. Upton, Josh Johnson, Brandon Weeden.. Then again, how can you blame them when the guy was ranked by Baseball America as "having the best breaking ball and best command among all college pitchers" and set records + led conferences in ERA/strikeouts/wins in college.

As was Danny Moskos (current White Sock, I guess you could say) though to a lesser degree. Pittsburgh missed out on David Price, Mike Moustakas, Matt Wieters, Madison Bumgarner, JHey, Ben Revere, Travis D'Arnaud, and Todd Frazier. Not as bad, but still a miss.

There's been plenty more like.. 2001 picking John Van Benschoten (wow what a name), though there weren't too many other 1st rounders who turned out to anything big other than #1 pick Joe Mauer, #5 pick Mark Texeira, and a guy that they actually could have got instead at #8 - Hickory High School 3B by the name of David Wright (he went at #38 as a supplemental pick). There was plenty in the 2nd round though - the main ones being Ryan Howard, C.J. Wilson, J.J. Hardy, Edwin Jackson, Youk, Uggla, and a bunch of other successful MLB players.

Jury's still out on Tony Sanchez, 2009 #4 overall pick. They could have had Zack Wheeler, Mike Minor, Mike Leake, Drew Storen, Aaron Crow, Tyler Skaggs, and of course.. Mike Trout.

Pittsburgh was lucky to have not missed like KC did with Hochevar or Colorado with Greg Reynolds at #1 and #2 in '06, though they weren't fortunate enough to land Longo (#3). They went with Brad Lincoln at #4, who's a good bullpen piece for the Blue Jays at the moment. However, Clayton Kershaw, Drew Stubbs, Max Scherzer, Kyle Drabek (who I suppose they could have traded for an ace like Halladay later on, just maybe), Ian Kennedy, Joba, and Chris Perez were still on the board. Not a terrible pick, but hey.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lastly, something I found cool about Moneyball and Billy Beane's draft strategy:
This might be the longest post ever, but that's what happens when you've got time on your hands before celebrating Christmas Eve.
And that's my baseball history lesson for today. Whew. Hope you guys enjoyed that. :)
More importantly how did Albert Pujols get selected in the 13th round?
James Shields in the 16th is another good one.
My favorite is Mike Piazza drafted as a favor to his dad.
EDIT: Imagine what the Padres would be like if they hadn't tried to save a few Mill with Matt Bush and had got,I dont know, the number #2 pick Justin Verlander or even #12 pick Jered Weaver instead.
When it comes to players in the draft, hindsight is only 20/20. You can't tell whether or not a player you draft will be a bust or a hall-of-fame caliber player right then and there on draft day. You just kinda have to go with what's available to you at the time, and hope and pray.
100% correct,however there are picks that everyone knows were made to save money and are terrible right from the start.(Matt Bush being one of them,the Pads wanted Stephen Drew or Jered Weaver but,since they were Scott Boras clients,they picked Bush.) If they hadnt been cheap,they would be better off now.
I agree dish, though it is fun sometimes to compare what might have been.
Yeah, it's pretty damn hard to imagine a winter being... tolerable.
Anybody have an idea of a player to make? I do have a list of players, but I'd need somebody to tell me a player and their ratings and I'll see how I can do. I don't know if I'll be accurate or not, but I'll try.
If not, some ratings/stance suggestions would help. Thx
