6/1 – 3/2009: Iowa City Country versus Honeybees

Game one: O'Connor v Gemoll
Country win eight – two

O'Connor pitches complete-game; milledge leaves in third inning - injured during steal attempt, but he is not put on injured reserve; Hudson has one triple, one double and two RBIs; Johnson hits a homerun, a triple (when the Honeybees right fielder takes a bad route to the ball and misses) and one double

Game two: Country Boardwalk v Honeybees Kershner
Final: Country win nine – zero

Bourgeois had a two-hit shutout through the fifth inning. He was removed in the sixth for middle reliever Stratton, called up earlier today and Oliver was sent down. Stratton pitched four innings, allowing just four hits, earning his first save of the season.

Cust had two homeruns; Huisman had two doubles

Game three: Country Depablos versus Honeybees Rio (96 DB SL – two, CB – three, FO – three)
Final score: Country win 14 – 1

Lineup: Spilborghs is in today's starting lineup, starting in as usual right field position, with Cust at DH

Comments: Five home runs were hit by the Country today with no player hitting more than one. Milledge hit his second homerun of the season, Erdos his fourth, and McCurdy his first; Spilborghs had a nice day at the plate before being pulled once the game was all but decided. He was 2/3 with a double, triple, three RBIs, and two runs scored.

Depablos went 7 – 1/3 innings, allowing one run on six hits with six strikeouts. Until the fifth inning, when the Honeybees scored, Depablos had only allowed one hit. Stratton and Buchanan combined to throw the remaining 1 – 2/3 innings, allowing one hit.

6/5 – 7/2009: Iowa City Country versus Oakland Athletics

Game one: Country Grindell (93 EC CU – four, CB – three, PA – three, HSK – one) versus Athletics Frese (91 EC SL – three, CB – one)

Lineup: Josh Fields is being given the day off, replaced at third by Schrager. Today's lineup is as follows – Hudson, Milledge, Spilborghs, Cust, Johnson, Erdos, Schrager, McCurdy, Huisman

Grindell had excellent movement on his pitches, striking out five in the first two innings, while the Athletics starter was wild, walking a runner, missing the plate and ultimately allowing the Country to load the bases, although he did escape that jam without allowing a run, but the second inning was a different story, as only a timely double-play stopped the Country from scoring more than twice in the bottom of the second.

The Athletics pulled even on four two-out base hits in the top of the third, but a monster fourth inning for the Country that included an RBI double for Spilborghs and a homerun from Cust on a hanging slider gave the Country a 7 – 2 lead. Grindell tired in the fourth and did not take the mound in the fifth. He left having allowed two runs in just four innings with six strike outs. He was replaced by middle reliever Buchanan (88 DC CU – two, SL – three, CB – two, FO-3). Buchanan closed out the fifth inning, but allowed a run in the sixth. It only took until the bottom of the seventh for the Country to restore their five run lead, when Cust homered to left-center field off of a curveball.

The score was 8-3 entering the top of the 9th, but when, due to a few bloop hits and some shoddy fielding, the Athletics pulled to within three, Chamberlain entered the game and retired Frank Thomas on a trickling ground ball back to the pitcher, closing the game 8-5.

Game two: Country Bailey (93 EB 2SF – three, DCB – four) versus Athletics Gaudin (95 CA SL – two, SP – two, CH – one)

Lineup: Harris fills in for Fields at third base and bats sixth

Bailey started off overpowering, but wild, and a timely Athletics double by Emo Brown brought in 2 runs. Hudson got one of them back with a leadoff homerun off of a first pitch slider that stayed in the middle of the plate. In the bottom of the second, the Country tied the game when Harris singled home Johnson, who led off with a double off the left centerfield wall, and pulled ahead when Hudson hit his second homerun in a row. End of two, five – two Country

Bailey pitch very well until he tired the seventh inning, allowing only two hits from the second inning through the sixth, relieved by Buchanan. Buchanan easily finished off the seventh, but gave up a three run game-tying homerun to Frank Thomas in the eighth. In the bottom of the inning, Hudson doubled off the left-field wall, stole second, but was thrown out trying to score on a Milledge single, although the Country did bring home one run on a Cust double. End of eight, six – five Country

Chamberlain took the mound in the top of the ninth and struggled a bit, giving up a single to the Athletics catcher and then one out later, a double to Mark Ellis, putting the go-ahead run at second with one out. The Country allowed the tying run to score in exchange for out number two, and when Eric Chavez popped out to shortstop, the game entering the bottom of the ninth inning tied at six.

Against Hudson Street, Brendon Harris led off with a single and was immediately replaced by JR Towles as a pinch runner. An Erdos single put the winning run at second and then a soft single from McCurdy up the middle brought Towles home for a walk off, game winning single. Seven – six Country

Comments: Hudson Street has excellent stuff, but has struggled this year, going one and five with one save. Orlando Hudson, on the other hand, had an amazing game, going 3/4 with two home runs, four RBIs and a stolen base. Bailey also pitched well, allowing two runs on seven hits over 6 – 1/3 innings with three strikeouts, and it was a shame he could not get the win.

Game three: Country Jimenez (98 EB CB – two, CH – four) versus Athletics Blanton (92 BA 2SF – one, SL – three, CB – two, CH – two)

Lineup: Huisman is being given the day off, replaced at shortstop by Brendan Harris, who will bat seventh and Erdos and McCurdy slide back one position in the batting order

Innings 1-5: The Athletics stranded runners in scoring position in the 1st 2 innings. The Country started the game with three singles, but since Hudson was thrown out trying to steal second, and Cust and Fields flied out, the first inning ended tied at zero, and the Country stranded runners in scoring position in the third. Finally, in the bottom of the fourth, Josh Fields broke the scoreless tie when he homered off of a two – one fastball. Johnson then followed with a double before Harris slammed a first pitch changeup into the centerfield bleachers. Three – zero Country. Jack Cust extended the lead by a run in the bottom of the fifth, homering when Blanton threw a slider that slid right into the middle of the plate. End the five, Country lead four – zero. Against an Athletics reliever in the seventh, the Country made some noise. Hudson single, stole second, and scored on a soft Milledge single to left. Five – zero Country

Innings 8-9: the Athletics threatened in the 8th, putting runners at first and second with one out, but ground outs to third and second ended the threats. Jimenez stayed in to pitch the ninth and gave up a double but closed the game, pitching a complete game shutout, five – zero

Comments: Jimenez pitched an excellent game, making excellent use of his level two curveball to set up his fastball early in the count and as a backdoor strikeout pitch to right-handed hitters. Through his nine innings, he only allowed eight hits and struck out eight. Offensively, the Country scored four of their five runs on homeruns – one apiece by Cust, Fields, and Harris, who had a two run homerun.

Awards: MVPs For the week ending June 7, 2009 was announced and the Country snagged both AL honors. Jack Cust was named weekly MVP for hitting 520 with six homeruns and 11 RBIs. Orlando Hudson was named MVP for hitting 500 with two home runs and six RBIs.

Also, All-Star balloting voting results were posted for the first time today. While it is too early to really judge, McCurdy is in the running for catcher, 10,000 votes behind second-place Varitek, but well behind the number one Joe Mauer. Dan Johnson is currently second among AL first baseman between Travis Hafner and Paul Konerko. Orlando Hudson is second among second baseman, Josh Fields leads third baseman by 13,000 votes. Milledge is the only Country outfielder nominated, and he is currently fourth behind Manny Ramirez, Hideki Matsui, and Coco Crisp.

2009 DRAFT REPORT

COUNTRY SELECTIONS:
    Pitchers Pettyjohn (95 D(130) C(105) 2SF-1, SL-1, CB-1, PA-3, slow starter)
    Uchiyama (95 D(123) C(94) SL-1, CH-2)

Q&A with GM ERISA Dude:

Q: can you comment, generally, on the selection process?
A: well, when we look at pitchers, while we look at everything, except whether they are righty or lefty and their style of delivery, we believe that it's generally easier to learn or improve breaking pitches than to add mph to a fastball and increase stamina. That's one reason we feel so fortunate to have landed pitchers with the 2 best fastballs in the draft, one of who is just 5 points away from having level B stamina.

Q: will either of these pitchers make the MLB roster before the September roster expansions?
A: Probably Pettyjohn. Both have a major league quality fastball, but Pettyjohn has enough stamina to pitch at least 4 innings per appearance, and he has a major league quality palm ball. We expect him to be a long reliever and spot starter this year.

Q: what about the knock on Pettyjohn for being a slow starter? Can't that can be a big problem with so many teams putting their top slugger 3rd?
A: you are right about him having that reputation. We thought Pettyjohn's positives outweighed the risk, but part of being a major league pitcher is learning how to get by without your best stuff. Grindell has had to experience that, pitching in blue condition a lot this season. Pettyjohn might simply have to learn to pitch his 1st couple of innings without his best stuff, perhaps by throwing breaking pitches closer to the corners if they don't break as much in those early innings.

    Q: what about Uchiyama?
A: Uchiyama has a major league fastball, but needs to work on his breaking pitches. His changeup is closer to being ready than his slider, so we'll probably ask him to focus on that initially. We see him as a potential future Andrew "Fireman" Brown.

Q: what pitches will Pettyjohn work on 1st?
A: with his top speed, a level 2 2SF would be tough for solid contact and a level 3 2SF could be devastating, so he will probably focus on that pitch. Once he gets to level 2, though, we might focus on the slider. The better one's fastball is, the sharper and more devastating the slider. We know he has a curveball, but we expect his palmball to be his main slow pitch, so we do not expect to work much on the curveball. We may also try to stretch out his stamina this year.

Q: why no position players selected?
A: we picked 4th from the end, and at that point, what we saw on the board we projected as potential starters at 3b after a few years of seasoning and potential OF backups. We are stocked at 3rd. 2 young players who can start at 3rd for many teams today - Josh Fields and Brendan Harris; 1 young player who will be a quality 3b in 1 or 2 more years (Schrager); 2 defensive players who can play a solid 3b (Towles & Riggins); and 1 gifted offensive player who can play 3rd, but might be better-suited for 1st in a couple of years (Merrill). For this reason, we did not see a 3b pick that could help us now or in the future. Similarly, not only do we have some dynamic OF, but we have solid backups in Timpner, Sweeney, & Thurston (who might be the best combination of decent hitting and solid fielding in this group), plus a decent minor leaguer or 2 that might break into the majors in another 3-4 years. On the other hand, there were some pitchers already ready for the majors, and we got one of them. We thinned out our minor league pitching staff earlier this year, so when another 95 mph arm became available, we eagerly snatched him up.

Other Notable Selections:

    Giants C Lambin FEFDCC
Blue Jays SS Finegan EEDD(9)DE-Gold Glover, Sparkplug
    Rangers SS Oviedo FEDDCD
    Nat'ls P Murillo (90 DB 2SF-1, CU-3, SL-2, CB-2)

Strictly for 2nd-guessing purposes, here was a set of picks (from a save & reload) that I chose not to take
    P 94 D(129)B(110) SL-2, CB-1, FO-2, SK-3, poise-2
    P 86 E(114)C(87) 2SF-1, CU-3, SL-3
The 1st rounder was tough to give up - 94 mph, level B stamina, and level 3 sinker. Bottom line for me was that a level 3 palm ball and a 2nd pitcher who can throw 95 was worth giving up on this B level stamina with a level 3 sinker - I have another pitcher with a palm ball and it's been extremely effective. While the #2 pick had good offspeed pitches, 86 mph fastball is tough to overcome - I don't think he would've added anything significant, while I do see the #2 pick I got as a potential late inning reliever.

Really enjoyed reading your draft summation, Erisa. Nice selections there, looking forward to see how they do this season.

6/9 – 11/2009: Iowa City Country versus Cincinnati Reds

Game one: Country Pettyjohn (95 DC 2SF – one, SL – one, CB – one, PA – three) versus Reds Harang (95 CA 2SF – one, SL – three, SLV – five, CH – two)

Comments: the Country's number one draft pick squares off against the Reds ace, while Angel Sanchez, who the Country traded away in a package for former Red Homer Bailey, mans second base in place of all-star second baseman Brandon Phillips, who was traded to the Kansas City Royals in exchange for Mark Teahen last week. Mark Teahen is in the Reds minor league system.

Pettyjohn started off strong in his first inning, striking out the second batter he faced, but gave up two hard hits to Adam Dunn and Pat Burrell that brought in a run for the Reds. While Pettyjohn was pitching very well, the Country kept chipping away at Harang. Second inning RBI singles from Erdos and Huisman gave the Country a 2 – 1 lead. The Country added a run in the third on a Fields sacrifice fly (bringing in Spilborghs, who previously singled, stole second, and moved to third on an infield base hit from Cust (helped by Angel Sanchez's weak arm at second). In the 4th, Huisman singled home McCurdy and ultimately scored on a shallow single from Milledge. In the 5th, Cust put one out when Harang, who had been using his slurve very well, threw one where the ball slid right over the middle of the plate. In the 6th, Hudson singled, stole second, and scored on a shallow single from Milledge. Another single and sacrifice fly, and the Country had a commanding nine – one lead.

In the ninth, Adam Dunn hit a two run homerun against middle reliever Buchanan, and then the Reds singled their way to within three runs when the Country called in Joba Chamberlain. With two out, Chamberlain gave up a single to Cora to load the bases and bring the winning run up in Adam Dunn, who homered in his prior at-bat earlier in the inning. One fastball, one slider, and one slow change later, Dunn struck out ending the game. Country win nine – six

Comments: one game, one win. An impressive six inning performance from first round draft choice Pettyjohn (one run on four hits with three strikeouts). Other than Dan Johnson's 0/4 night, the Country offense was very productive. Cust went 4/4 and fell a triple shy of hitting for the cycle, five other Country players had at least two hits; Milledge, Fields, and Huisman each had two RBIs, and the first three batters in the Country lineup each stole a base (Milledge stole two). Middle reliever Buchanan, who seemed to have the inside track as the middle reliever to use when a starter exited early, was terrible, giving up five runs in only 2/3 of an inning.

Game two: Country O'Connor (89 EA SL – three, CB – one, CH – three) versus Reds Baker (93 CA CU – one, CB – three, CH – four)

Lineup: Josh Fields is given the day off, replaced by Harris. Starting pitcher Bourgeois was injured in practice yesterday. He is expected back in four days.

The Country immediately took the lead when Hudson led off the bottom half of the first with a home run off of a hanging changeup, and a couple of base hits combined with a few poor fielders choices allowed the Country to take a three – zero lead. In the 3rd, the Country extended their lead to five when a Harris double brought in Cust and Johnson. After five innings, the Country starting pitcher had only given up two singles while the Reds starter exited after three. An eighth inning homerun by Dan Johnson and a Huisman RBI double extended the Country's lead to seven – zero. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, O'Connor lost his shutout, giving up four hits in a row, but he finally did record that last out, pitching a complete game. Final score: seven – two Country

Comments: while starting pitcher O'Connor was deserving of his player of the game award, it appeared that Hudson had about 20 assists. Aside from fielding an abnormally large number of balls hit his way, he ranged deep into shallow rightfield, centerfield and even ranged beyond the second base bag to retrieve balls and turn hits into outs. O'Connor used 74 pitches to get his 27 outs, and 44 of those were fastballs

Game three: Country James (91 CB SL – three, CH – three) versus Reds Belisle (95 CA 2SF – one, SL – two, CB – two)

Lineup: Huisman, reporting in purple condition, is replaced at shortstop by JR Towles

In this well-pitched game, each team had only one hit heading into the bottom of the third inning and the Country finally scored thanks to the one – two punch of their eight – nine hitters when McCurdy doubled off the centerfield wall and came home when Towles grounded into a fielders choice. A sacrifice fly by Spilborghs later in the inning gave the Country a two – zero lead entering the fourth. The Reds threatened in the top of the eighth, having a runner on second with one out and then on third with two out, but failed to score. In the bottom half, Belisle finally began to tire, and gave up a two run homerun to Jack Cust, doubling the Country's lead and ushering in middle reliever Weathers. Four – zero Country. In the ninth, James gave up a couple of singles but not a run, pitching a complete game shutout.

Comments: both starting pitchers pitched very well today, as neither team ever had more than two hits in an inning. James needed only 66 pitches for this complete-game, allowing only six hits with six strikeouts. Belisle, meanwhile, only used 61 pitches to get through his 7 – 2/3 innings, Allowing four runs on nine hits, but two of those runs coming on his last pitch.

Solid trade for the Reds with BP/Teahen lol.
