No, no, no - he hit a lead off homerun in the 2nd inning.. I think they have him batting 5th.

GAME THREE: Country Lannan (89 EB SL – three, CB – four, CH – three) versus Mariners Silva (95 BA SL – three, SV – two, CH – two, HSK – two)

Lineup: Spilborghs is back in the three hole, but playing DH while Cust mans right-field. Schrager plays second base

Inning two: Cust led off the second with a ground ball single up the middle and Fields followed by doubling to left-center field, leaving runners at second and third with no out for Dan Johnson. Johnson hit a soft single up the middle scoring both runners and moving into second on the throw home. Several more singles and two outs at home plate and the Country took a three – zero lead into the bottom half of the second. The Mariners scored on two singles, a stolen base, and an error on the catcher who threw the ball into shallow centerfield. 3-1, Country.

Inning three: the Mariners scored again on several singles and a passed ball. After recording one out, Lannan just could not get out number two, and he was sent packing in the third, replaced by James, who immediately give up a three run homerun to Wilkerson. By the time the inning ended, seven Mariners scored and Seattle lead eight – three

Inning five: the Country were hitting the ball hard, but right at people until Johnson came to the plate and hit a solo homerun with two outs. End of five, Mariners lead eight – four

Inning six: Seattle's Betancourt homered over the left-field fence, extending Seattle's lead to 9 – 4

Inning seven: Richie Sexson came to the plate with one out and hit a solo homerun with a right-field fence, extending the Mariners lead to six runs

The Country would threaten with runners in scoring position, but did not score and the Mariners avoided a sweep with a convincing 10 – 4 win

5/15 – 17/2009: Iowa City Country at Detroit Tigers

This was a very exciting series for the Country. Game one pitted the Country's Grindell (93 EC CU – four, CB – three, PA – three, HSK – one) versus the Tigers Bedard (97 CA 2SF – two, CU – two, CB – three, CH – two). Prior to today's game, Hudson was cleared to play and Merrill was sent down to the minors to make room. Huisman, reporting in blue condition, was given the day off, replaced by towles, batting ninth. Cust continues to start in right field with Spilborghs batting out of the DH spot

In Orlando Hudson's first at-bat since landing on the DH, he hit his 1000th career hit – a double to right center field and ultimately scored on a sacrifice fly from Jack Cust to deep leftfield. The Country increased their lead with "small ball," as one-out singles by Erdos, McCurdy, and Towles brought home another run in the 2nd, and in the 3rd, Milledge led off with a single, moved to second on a Spilborghs fielders choice, and then scored on a Cust single to center field. The Country's only extra-base hit in the game happened in the eighth, when Milledge singled and scored all the way from first on a Cust double over the centerfielder's head.

In the field, the Country had solid fielding and pitching. Grindell retired the side in the 1st, with the help of a five – four – three double play, and escaped the bottom of the second unscathed in spite of two errors. First, with Carlos Guillen hustling down the line on a grounder to Dan Johnson, Dan Johnson's toss to first was not caught, as the pitcher did not arrive in time, allowing Guillen to reach first on an error. Then, when Guillen took off for second, Country catcher McCurdy overthrew second base, allowing Guillen to reach third with one out. Fortunately, a Grindell strikeout of Jones and a Rodriguez groundout to short ended the 2nd inning with the Country leading two – zero. Grindell was having a dominant afternoon, pitching a one-hit shutout until the sixth inning, when Curtis Granderson bunted for a base hit with two out. Grindell followed that up with a strikeout to end the inning. This was Grindell's strongest start of the season. In earning his second win, the player of the game pitched two-hit shutout ball over six innings with five strikeouts. When the Tigers threatened but stranded a runner at third in the 8th, the game entered the ninth inning with the Country leading four – zero. Chamberlain entered the game In the bottom of the 9th and gave up a single, but closed the game out uneventfully, preserving the Country's four – zero win

GAME TWO saw Country Bourgeois (90 DC SL – two, CU – four, CB – four, V SL – one) take on the Tigers Galarraga (90 FD SL – one, CH – two). The Country used their same lineup as yesterday, except that instead of Towles substituting in at shortstop for Huisman, he is replacing McCurdy at catcher (both McCurdy and Huisman are in blue condition).

A lead off homerun by the Tigers Curtis Granderson in the bottom of the 1st was matched in the top of the 2nd by a Dan Johnson two run homerun in the top of the 2nd. Aside from the Johnson homerun and an Erdos triple (Erdos was stranded at 3rd), the Tigers Galarraga was keeping the Country off balance with his changeup, but he went to the well once too often when Cust hammered an outside changeup for a 4th inning homerun. When Bourgeois escaped a bases-loaded, one-out jam by inducing a five – four – three double play, the fourth inning ended with the Country leading three – one. A Santiago triple against a drawn in outfield and a Granderson sacrifice fly in the 5th cut the Country's lead to three – two. Even though Galarraga was tiring in the 5th, the Tigers left him in the game to start the sixth and the Country made them pay, as a Spilborghs single and Cust's second homerun of the day (this one off of a hanging change) gave the Country some breathing room, and then a double by Erdos and a single from Huisman brought home another run. Country lead 6-2. Andrew Brown started the seventh inning after middle reliever Oliver pitched a scoreless sixth. Brown retired the Tigers and order the seventh, but gave up a solo homerun to Curtis Granderson in the eighth. Chamberlain took the mound in the 9th to protect a 6-3 lead and immediately struck out the Tigers Magglio Ordonez and Carlos Guillen before inducing Jones to ground out to short, preserving the Country's six – three victory

Comments: Cust is having an outstanding April. He trails Josh Fields (29) by one homerun, and his batting average is just a hair under 500 (494); the Country appear to be mired in a sort of hitting slump, as they have not been consistently putting the ball in play. Today, their first two hitters, Hudson & Milledge, went a combined 0/8 and Spilborghs was only 1/4.

In GAME THREE, Country James (91 CB SL – three, CH – three) faced off against Tigers Robertson (93 CA SL – three, CH – two). The Country used the same line up as yesterday, except that Towles is, again, playing shortstop in place of Huisman. Also, Erdos is being given the day off in favor of Joe Thurston in left field.

A frustrating 1st inning saw the Country load the bases on singles from Hudson, Milledge, and Spilborghs, but Cust hammered a three – two pitch directly at the Tigers third baseman, who completed an unassisted double play (catching Cust's ball on the fly and stepping on 3rd to double off Hudson) before Fields flied out to left ending inning without score. Hudson, however, did his Jack Cust impersonation in the 2nd when, after Towles singled home Thurston in the 2nd, Hudson hit a two run homerun. Fields extended the lead in the third with a solo homerun over the left-field fence. Granderson drove home the first Tigers run of the day when he singled home Inge, who singled and went to second on a wild pitch, but when James picked Granderson off of first, the third inning ended with the Country leading four – one. In the bottom of the fourth, the Tigers were set for a big inning, as they loaded the bases with none out for the dangerous Carlos Guillen on an infield single that Fields seemed to double clutch on his throw and an error on leftfielder Joe Thurston who dropped an easy fly ball in left. One run scored on a fielders choice that yielded no outs; an Ivan Rodriguez single following a strikeout brought in another run. James struck out the next batter, too, but then the Tigers number nine hitter, Santiago, doubled against a drawn in infield, bringing in two more runs, and giving the Tigers a five – four lead. The Tigers held onto that lead until the seventh, when the Country took a 6-5 lead when Cust hit a two run homerun to dead centerfield with Milledge on first. Andrew Brown pitched a scoreless eighth and then Chamberlain entered to close out the 9th, but gave up the game-tying homerun to Ivan Rodriguez. The score remained tied at six with middle reliever Stratton pitching until to the bottom of the 11th when the Tigers used three soft, shallow singles to load the bases with one out. The Country pulled in their outfield against Brandon Inge and brought in Shawn Green, but Inge hammered an 0-2 pitch into the deepest part of centerfield, easily bringing home the winning run. Final score: Tigers win seven – six

Awards: the weekly MVPs were announced and for week six (5/11 – 17/2009). Cust was named one of the players of the week. During this time, he hit 577 with five home runs and 12 RBIs. He now shares the league lead for homeruns with Josh Fields.

Record: The Country's record is 36 and 8. This is 14 games better than the second place team in AL Central, the Indians, whose record is 22 and 22. The Country are nine games better then the second-place AL team, the Yankees (27 – 17) and are five games ahead of the NL leading NY Mets (31 – 13).

Yes that update was good, too bad you lost the last game. Nice two wins though.

5/18-20/2009: IOWA CITY COUNTRY v. NY YANKEES

GAME 1 saw the Country's O'Connor (89 EA SL – three, CB – one, CH – three) face off against the Yankees Hughes (95 EB SL – two, CB – four, CH – two). In the lineup, Thurston continued to replace Erdos in the lineup and in left field. McCurdy and Huisman, both in blue condition for the last several games, or both starting. Spilborghs, still in blue condition, continues to bat out of the DH spot with Cust taking his place in right field.

Johnny Damon led off the game with a double to right center field, but huge strikeouts of Jeter and Teixeira, and a pop out to the catcher from Rodriguez ended the threat. In the bottom half inning, Hudson also let off with a double, but the Country brought Hudson home on a soft single by Milledge off of an 0-1 pitch. A single by Spilborghs and a sacrifice fly from Cust put runners at first and third with one out for Josh Fields who singled. The inning ended with the Country stranding a runner in scoring position, but leading two – zero. A 2nd inning leadoff double by Cano led to a run when Matsui singled to leftfield. Country lead two – one. The Country extended their lead in the bottom half of the 4th to 3-1 when Thurston and McCurdy singled into the gap between the Yankees second and first basemen, and then Hudson hit an opposite field single through the gap between the Yankees third baseman and shortstop. O'Connor escaped another jam in the 5th as the Yankees had a runner at second with no one out and then at third with one out, but failed to score, while the Country extended their lead when Spilborghs singled, stole second, and came home on a Johnson two-out double to right center field. Thurston then drove home Johnson on a slow rolling single up the middle into shallow centerfield. Country lead five – one. The Yankees chased O'Connor from the game in the 6th when Cano singled, stole second and came home on a Matsui double to center field. Middle reliever Oliver came in and give up an infield single to Melky Cabrera before fly outs to the infield closed out the top of the sixth. The Country matched that run and then extended their lead in the bottom half evening as Milledge hit a one-out single up the middle, went to third on a Spilborghs single to left center field, and scored on a Cust sacrifice fly, and Spilborghs scored from first on a Fields double to left center field. A Johnson double drove in Fields and gave the Country an eight – two lead after six. Rodriguez led off the 8th with a homerun and Cano followed with a double. A Matsui single put runners at first and third with no out and sent Oliver to the showers in favor of Andrew "fireman" Brown. A Cabrera single preceded a six – three doubleplay and an inning ending groundout to second. End of eight, Country lead eight – four. Brown stayed to pitch the ninth and allowed a two-out double to Mark Teixeira, but closed out the game without allowing a run. Final score: Country win eight – four.

GAME Two pitted Country starter Jimenez (98 EB CB – two, CH – four) versus Yankees Lowe (92 DB CU – one, CB – two, CH – two, HSK – five). Spilborghs continues to play out of the DH spot, with Cust fielding in right. McCurdy and Huisman continue to report in blue condition, and Towles is substituting in at short for Huisman today

After setting down the Yankees impressively in the 1st, with strikeouts of Jeter and Rodriguez book ending a Teixeira single, the Country made some noise when Cust hammered a cut fastball down the middle the plate, putting it well beyond the right-field fence with Milledge on first, taking a two – zero lead, and extended that lead to 5-0 after 2 when a one out double from Towles brought Johnson (who singled) home, and a Hudson single drove in Thurston (who singled) and Towles. The Country were fortunate to hold the Yankees to 1 run in the 4th, as a Jeter double and Teixeira single left runners at first and third with no one out against Alex Rodriguez, who drove home Jeter with a sacrifice fly, but no other offense was mounted. Country lead five – one. In the 5th, Spilborghs scored after singling and stealing second, when Jack Cust singled to center, restoring the Country's five run lead. In the sixth, Johnny Damon led off with a single and moved to second on a Jeter bunt, but a failed hit and run with Teixeira at the plate resulted in Damon getting thrown out at third. The Country, meanwhile, expanded their lead as McCurdy and Towles singled, moved up to second and third on a wild pitch, and scored on a Hudson double, giving the Country a comfortable eight – one lead that proved vital when Alex Rodriguez led off the seventh with his 19th home run of the season and a Morgan Ensburg double with runners at second and third with two out. The inning ended on an interesting defensive play when Jose Molina (EE) grounded the ball to the left side of the field, Fields got a glove on it but merely ricocheted the ball on the ground to Towles at short, who threw to first, ending the top of the seventh. In the bottom half the inning, Nomo, pitching his third inning of the game, gave up a single up the middle to Spilborghs on a forkball up in the zone and then grooved a fastball right down the heart of the plate that Cust turned on for his second two run homerun of the day. The Yankees doubled their run output in the 8th when Damon, Jeter, and Teixeira singled, singled, and doubled, respectively, against middle reliever Oliver. When Rodriguez followed with his second home run of the game, Oliver was replaced by Shawn Green. A slow rolling infield single down the third-base line from Cano and a single by Cabrera alternated with fly outs to the outfield, but a force out at third ended the top of the eighth with the Country still leading 10 – 6. Joba Chamberlain started the ninth inning and avoided giving a leadoff single to Johnny Damon when Cust made a nifty sliding catch in right field. An excellent play by Hudson, charging a high, slow bouncing grounder from Jeter and making a strong throw to first for number two. A five pitch strikeout of Mark Teixeira ended the game, 10 – 6, Country.

Comments: this was a solid win, with the Country hitting for power (four extra-base hits), grouping singles together, and getting solid pitching from Country starter, Jimenez, who surrendered two runs over seven innings on nine hits with four strikeouts. Although middle reliever Oliver's appearance was a disaster– allowing four runs on four hits without recording an out, Green and Chamberlain pitched perfect eighth and ninth innings to close out the game.

Fields has been struggling lately and was hitless for the second day in a row, although he did hit the ball hard to the outfield several times, but either right at outfielders, or that the speedy Melky Cabrera was able to track down.

Towels, filling in at shortstop, was very effective at the plate, going 3/4 with one double, one RBI, and two runs scored. Hudson also had a strong game, going 3/5 with a double, four RBIs, although he was picked off first.

GAME THREE had Country Lannan (89 EB SL – three, CB – four, CH – three) face off against the Yankees Wang (96 CA HSL – three, SP – three, CH – three, HSK – five). Harris filled in for Johnson at first, Thurston replaced Erdos in left, and Towles started at shortstop for Huisman; Cust continues to play RF and Spilborghs DH.

An offensive 1st inning saw the Yankees start the game with two singles followed by two doubles. A fielders choice pushed the 4th Yankees run across the plate before a three-run homerun by Cust off of a hanging hard sinker brought the Country to within a run. The Country grabbed an 8-4 lead in the 2nd after closing out the top of the inning by throwing out Derek Jeter trying to steal second, when their eighth and ninth hitters singled and Orlando Hudson homered over the right centerfield fence, and then Fields hit a two run homerun with Cust on first. In innings 3, 5, & 6, the Yankees used small ball and solid pitching to close to within 1 run (8-7). Middle reliever Oliver started the sixth and, in between solid base hits, there were a few oddities, like the slow footed Yankees catcher popping up just behind first base, but Harris insisting on covering first instead of catching the flyball, allowing it to drop in for a run scoring single. Fortunately, a five pitch strikeout of Mark Teixeira with the bases-loaded ended the inning with only one run scored, but in the 7th, a Rodriguez solo home run tied the game, which stood when the Country were retired without threatening for the fourth inning in a row. The game remained at 8-8 until the 9th, when leadoff doubles from Jeter and Teixeira and gave up a two run homerun to Alex Rodriguez gave the Yankees a 3 run lead.

Mariano Rivera entered to close out the 11 – 8 game, facing Spilborghs. Singles by Spilborghs and Cust put runners at first and third with Josh Fields at the plate representing the tying run. Fields hit a sacrifice fly that brought home Spilborghs. Harris had a very tough at bat, starting off zero – two, but fighting off a pitch and allowing two close balls to go by before muscling a two seam fastball into right-center field that allowed Cust to hustle all the way to third. The Country then pinch ran for Harris with Erdos. Thurston hit the ball to short and Derek Jeter came home and threw out Cust at the plate. Dan Johnson came to the plate as a pinch-hitter for McCurdy and flied out to shallow centerfield, ending the game, 11-9 Yankees.

5/21/2009: the Iowa City Country announced a trade with the Cincinnati Reds

The Country receive minor-league pitcher Great Paulino* (93 EB 2SF – three, DCB – four) in exchange for minor-league midfielder Angel Sanchez (DEFDDD), Major league starter Lannan (89 EB SL – three, CB – four, CH – three), and minor-league pitcher Dierdorff (88 DC SL – three, CB – two, FO – four)

Officially, the Country expressed their interest in Paulino, believing he can start in the current rotation. About Dierdorf, though sorry to see him go, the Country believe they already have his replacement on the roster, and wanted to free up more space on the roster to give them the flexibility to pull off a multiplayer trade, if it presents itself, and be able to sign an undrafted free agent after this season's draft. The Country now have 39 players on the roster, 5 below the 44 man limit

Network analysts believe that this trade was financially based, as Lannan just signed a $1.2 million contract last off-season, but has been pitching like a back-end starter. He has only three wins in eight starts, during which time he has averaged about 4.6 innings per start with a 10.5 ERA. Dierdorf was similarly given a $1.2 million contract, as he was an important part of the middle relief last season, but he has been mired in AAA this year, appearing in only five major-league games.

A Country official who asked to speak anonymously mentioned that he believes their young GM made some mistakes last year, believing that when you awarded a player a multiyear contract, the dollar figure put on the dotted line was for the entirety of the contract and not the per year salary.

As for Angel Sanchez, who was certainly affordable, it is believed he was a necessary piece of the puzzle to get the Reds take on that additional salary. Sanchez has frustrated coaches with his slow development in all phases of the game – offense, defense, and speed. He has neither enough offense to make up for his defensive deficiencies (which may be what differentiates him from a player like Brendan Harris), and his defense is serviceable, but not good enough to make up for his mediocre offense (which is what separates him from JR Towles, who has become a surprisingly-integral part of the team). It is believed that he became expendable due to several factors, including:

      1. Huisman (CEDCCD) learning SS and being a little better than Sanchez on offense and a lot better on defense, all but locking up the position for the next few years
      2. Schrager, a more offensively-gifted player, is viewed as a future MLB 2b or 3b
      3. Other rookies like Jung (DEFECD), who can play catcher and second, developed to have a similar skill set as Sanchez, while Merrill is still deficient in the field, but his offensive potential cannot be ignored.
      4. Almost every other nonstarter has improved various aspects of their games faster than Sanchez, like Towles (contact and speed), Jung (contact and defense), Harris (arm strength and speed), and Chiaffredo (defense and arm strength).

* I searched this site and it seems the consensus is that Paulino is based on "Homer Bailey," so I'll be tweaking the name for that.

Roster moves: in addition to promoting Paulino to the roster, the Country made several moves with players who were reporting in purple condition:

Sweeney was called up from AAA, replacing Erdos

Dan Johnson was sent down to AAA, replaced by Merrill (DDEEFG, 1B, 3B)

Spilborghs was sent down, replaced by Chiaffredo (EFEDCD, SS, 2b)

Huisman was sent down, replaced by Sean Riggins (DFFBDD, C, 3B, 2b)

Schrager was sent down, replaced by reserve outfielder Timpner (DEDEDE, LF, CF)

Middle reliever Stratton was sent down, replaced by Buchannan (88 DC CU – three, SL – three, CB – two, FO – three)

Shawn Green was sent down, replaced by Murray (90 DC SL – two, KNC – four, FO – two)

The Pirates reportedly offered to trade pitcher Ian Snell (96 CA 2SF – one, SL – two, CB – two, CH – two), a free agent after next season, to the Country in exchange for Country star CF Lastings Milledge (DDAEED), who has two years remaining after the current season.

It is expected that the Country will turn down this offer, as they seem to view Milledge as one of their core players. Analysts believe the Country view pitchers Depablos, Chamberlain, and Brown, OF Milledge, Spilborghs, and Cust, and 3b Josh Fields as "untouchable," although super-utility man JR Towles may fall into that category, too.

Meanwhile, a trade was announced between the Indians and the Colorado Rockies, with the Rockies receiving defensive outfielder Jason Michaels (DDDACC) in exchange for starting pitcher Jeff Francis (90 BA 2SF – two, SL – two, CB – two, CH – two). Michaels is under contract for one year longer than Francis, who will be a free agent at the end of next season. Each player has a salary of just over $3.1 million.
