4/20 – 22/2009: Iowa City Country versus Minnesota Twins

GAME ONE: Country O'Connor (89 EA SL – three, CB – one, CH – three) versus Twins Bonser (94 CB SL – three, CB – two, CH – three)

Lineup: Sweeney continues to start in left field in place of Erdos, recovering in the minors

The Twins struck in the top of the first on several singles. O'Connor should have been able to get out the jam, but on this slippery wet day, Josh Fields failed to grab what should've been easy grounder to make the last out of the inning. Since he did not even touch the ball, he was not awarded an error. The Country pulled even and ahead when, after Josh Fields got on base, Cust hammered a slider that slid over the lower middle of the plate and hit it out of the park, grabbing a two – one Country lead after two. The Country were poised for a big 3rd inning when McCurdy, Milledge, Spilborghs, and Johnson singled to score a run and leave the bases loaded with one out. After Josh Fields popped out too short, Cust hammered his second homerun of the day, this one a grand slam into the upper deck behind center field. End of three, Country lead seven – one. A 5-run 4th on singles by McCurdy, Hudson, and Milledge, and homeruns by Dan Johnson (off a Tom Gordon fosh) and Josh Fields gave the Country a comfortable 12 – 1 lead after four.

The Twins scored quickly in the 5th, with Delmon Young hitting a leadoff double and then scoring on a Mauer single, and were poised for a big sixth, thanks to another error (this one actually charged) by third baseman Josh Fields and a fielders choice - the Twins had bases-loaded with no one out for their number eight hitter, Punto. O'Connor got the jam with a double-play – a fly ball to second baseman Hudson who threw to first for the forceout double-play, followed by a slow groundball to third-base, ending the 1/2 inning without allowing a run. As if to highlight the Twins' frustration, Spilborghs lead off the bottom half the inning with a home run over the last centerfield fence. Josh Fields then singled and scored all the way from first on a Cust double, extending the Country's lead to 14 – 2 after 6. That would stand as the final score of the game.

Notable: Cust, the player of the game, was 4/4 with a double, two homeruns (including a grand slam), seven RBIs, and two runs scored; Milledge was 3/3 (the blue-condotioned Miledge was pulled after his 3rd at bat) with an RBI and two runs scored; O'Connor pitched a strong eight innings, allowing two runs on 12 hits with three strikeouts

Transactions: after the game, Timpner and middle reliever Oliver were optioned to the minors and Shawn Green and Erdos where recalled. Both players are in purple condition, but insiders say coaches expect them to play through

GAME TWO: Country James (91 CB SL – three, CH – three) versus Twins Brazell (93 DC 2SF – two, SL – two, FO – two)

This was a tight pitchers duel until the fifth inning, when the Twins scored 2 runs on several singles and a Morneau "bloop" double that was just over Hudson's head and then rolled into foul territory. Dan Johnson led off the bottom half the inning with a triple off the right centerfield wall, and then Fields hit a game-tying homerun. The Twins pulled ahead in the 7th when Mauer singled home Delmon Young, who led off the inning with a double. The Twins had a chance to extend their lead when they loaded the bases on a single and a fielders choice where Fields fielded a grounder, tried to tag out the runner coming to third but missed, and then threw to first late, but Andrew "fireman" Brown came into the game and struck out the next two batters, ending the threat. The Twins lead three – two entering the 9th, when Liriano entered to close out the game, but after a Johnson single and a Fields strikeout, Cust doubled off the right centerfield wall and Johnson hustled all the way around to score the tying run. Liriano started the 10th and after retiring the Country's number nine hitter, Hudson and Milledge singled, putting runners at first and third with one out for Ryan Spilborghs, who grounded the ball to second base and Hudson was thrown out trying to score, but then Johnson hammered a 0 – 1 changeup into the right centerfield gap for a walk off double. Final score, Country win four – three

Comments: it was a shame that Country starter James could not get the win, having allowed only three runs on 14 hots over 6 – 1/3 innings with five strikeouts. Brown was amazing in his 2 – 2/3 innings of relief, during which he allowed one hit and struck out four batters. The Country were lucky to pull this one out, as there were a number of miscues on this rainy, sloppy day. Hudson, Milledge, & Spilborghs were each thrown out on steal attempts, and Spilborghs was also picked off at 1st. Milledge and Hudson were each thrown out at home, and Hudson and Fields made misjudgments in the field.

GAME THREE: Country Depablos (93 DC SL – four, CB – four, VS L – one) versus Twins Moyer (85 FB 2SF – two, CU – two, CB – one, CCH – three)

Lineup: the Country are using their standard lineup, but Cust, who reported back in purple condition yesterday is moved back from fourth in the batting order to seventh

While Depablos, reporting in pink condition, looked dominant, striking out Young and Mauer on three pitches, while Lamb grounded out weakly to the second baseman, Moyer was crafty, allowing Countrymen to reach first and second with no out, but keeping the three – five hitters off-balance, largely with circle changes, to keep the game scoreless. The Twins broke through in the second when, after Depablos struck out the lead batter, Morneau doubled to right-center and scored on Everett's bloop single to right. Depablos gave up another bloop single before inducing a five – four – three inning ending double play. The Twins' one – zero lead lasted until the fourth inning, when singles by Erdos, McCurdy, Hudson, and Milledge gave the Country a two – one lead entering the fifth. While Depablos continued to dominate the Twins, Moyer induced a groundout from Dan Johnson on a three – zero circle change, just before Fields launched a two seam fastball into the left field bleachers. The Country extended their 3-1 lead to 8-1 in the eighth, when singles from Huisman, McCurdy, Milledge, Johnson, Fields, and Cust bookended a Hudson RBI double.

Chamberlain entered the ninth in a non-save situation, probably to get some work in, as he had not appeared in a game recently. He quickly retired the leadoff batter before allowing enough and doubles to bring the Twins to within 2. With a runner on second and the tying run at home with one out, Andrew "fireman" Brown was called in for the save. A fielders choice and a ground out to short ended the game with a Country eight – six win.

Comments: Hudson and Milledge were both 3/5 with two RBIs; Johnson, Fields, and Cust were each 2/5; Erdos and McCurdy each had four hits on the day, while Huisman had an off day, going 1/5 and hitting into two double plays

Depablos has been dominating in his last few starts (1.84 ERA), and in this one, he went six innings, allowing one run on five hits with 10 strikeouts, including multiple strikeouts of Twins stars Young and Mauer. Chamberlain had an off day, allowing five earned runs in 1/3 Innings, but the other three relievers, Sean Green, Jiang , and Brown, pitched a solid 2 – 2/3 innings, allowing no runs, no hits, with two strikeouts

Spilborghs – Coach meeting

Spilborghs: "coach, I got a note you wanted to see me?

Coach: yes, Ryan. Have a seat

[both sit]

Coach: Ryan, I'm really happy with your production out of the three spot. You're definitely showing that we made the right call there, but I think you can do even better.

Spilborghs: well, coach, I think I'm leading the league in RBIs. I know I have more home runs this many games into the season that I had my first few weeks as a country player last year?

Coach: I agree. The issue is that I think you are trying to do too much. You are our most well-rounded offensive player. Decent power, good contact; especially in the clutch, and decent speed. But I think you're trying to be a 30 – 30 guy and it's actually hurting us a bit.

Spilborghs: but, coach, I do have the power to jack it out of the park and I've got 5 steals this season!!!

Coach: true, but you've also hit a lot of deep flyballs that probably would have dropped in for singles and doubles if you were just trying to get on base. And while you have 5 steals, you've been picked off first at least twice, you've been saved from getting thrown out on steal attempts by our batters swinging at some bad pitches that were scored as fielders choices, and you've been caught stealing 3 times. Now, Ryan, I'm not saying you're not a home run hitter and a base stealer – I'm just saying you need to be more conservative on when you try those things. For the most part, you're hitting behind some speedy players, who only need singles to score. Also, your speed is going to help you make doubles and will help you score from first with our power hitters behind you, so the point is not really for you to steal bases.

Spilborghs: but, coach, I think stealing bases distracts the pitchers and will help our homerun hitters hit home runs. I've also been continuing to work out on improving my speed.

Coach: I agree with both points. When you do get your speed up to level B, you can be more aggressive on the base paths. But for now I want you to meet with the baserunning coach every day. If the pitcher has a mid to upper 90s max, you are not to steal if the catcher has an arm of D or better. Got it?

Spilborghs: yes coach. I'll be more conservative at the plate and on the base paths.

Coach: Good. I am not really interested in seeing you be a 20 – 20 guy this season, or even a 15 – 15 guy. What I want you to focus on is doubles, RBIs, and runs scored. I want you to try to lead the league in two of those categories. If you do, I expect you'll wind up with around 10-13 homeruns and 15-20 steals, but the other stuff - the RBIs and runs scored will probably add a run per game, which is huge over the course of a season.

4/24 – 26/2009: Iowa City Country versus Chicago White Sox

GAME ONE: Country Jimenez (98 EB CB – two CH – four) versus White Sox Danks (90 DB SL – one CH – two)

Lineup: with backup OF Sweeney reporting in blue condition, Sweeney was optioned to the minors and Joe Thurston (DEEDCD), last years second baseman who can also play leftfield and center, was called up to the major league roster. Also, with Cust continuing to report in purple condition, he is being given the day off. Johnson is batting out of the DH spot today, with Brendan Harris manning first. Also, Huisman (hitting under 290) and McCurdy (hitting over 440) switched places in the batting order (eighth and ninth)

Innings one through four was a hard-fought offensive struggle. The White Sox started with a bang, as Thome hit a two run homerun in the 1st. The Country came out hacking in the bottom if the inning, with Hudson and Milledge hitting balls to deep center field that Swisher was able to track down but only at the last second. Spilborghs then doubled to right-center field and scored on a Dan Johnson ground rule double, cutting the White Sox lead to two – one. Swisher extended the White Sox lead when he hit a one – two pitch – a high inside fastball – just inside the right-field fence for a solo homerun. The Country overtook this three – one deficit in the fourth, when Huisman lead off with a single and Hudson followed with a two run homerun over the left-field fence. Two outs later, Dan Johnson stepped to the plate and promptly deposited a changeup over the right-field fence to take a four – three lead after 4.

When the White Sox threatened in the 6th, putting runners at first and second with one out, the Country immediately went to their bullpen, calling in Andrew "fireman" Brown, who induced an inning ending double-play, and then retired the White Sox in order in the seventh. The Country then extended their lead as a single by Hudson and a successful hit-and-run with Milledge put runners at first and third, no out. On a delayed double steel, with Milledge taking off for second and then Hudson going for home once Milledge was in a rundown, Milledge made it successfully to second, but Hudson was called out at home. Spilborghs then singled Milledge home, taking a five – three lead into the 8th. Brown continued to dominate the White Sox while the Country extended their lead to seven – three, which stood as the final score of the game.

Comments: in this well pitched game, Jimenez allowed three runs on nine hits over 5 – 1/3 innings, recording seven strikeouts. Brown was dominant during his entire 3 – 2/3 innings of work, allowing no runs on three hits while recording two strikeouts
