GAME THREE: Iowa city country Depablos (93 DC SL – four, CB – four, the SL – one) at Kansas City Royals Meche (96 BA to SF – one, HSL – two, DCB – four, CH – two)

Lineup: Dan Johnson gets the day off, replaced at first by Brendan Harris

This was a pitching dual like none other I've ever seen, as the game entered the ninth inning at zero – zero, with Meche allowing only three hits and Depablos, four

The Country had their best scoring chance of the game when Hudson singled on a three – one hard slider and then stole second on a one – zero drop curve to Milledge. With a one – two count, Milledge hit a weak fly ball to right field and Hudson had to wait to see whether it would be caught by the second baseman, so when it fell in for single, it left runners at first and third with nobody out for Ryan Spilborghs. A drop curve caught the low, inside corner for strike one. Then Spilborghs hammered a changeup but grounded the ball right at the shortstop who came home. Hudson change direction in time and all runners were safe, leaving the bases loaded with no out for Jack Cust.

Jack Cust connects with a fastball on the outside corner of the plate...its going to deep left field...deep..it's gone! A grand slam over the left field fence!!!

When Depablos retired the Royals in order, striking out the last two batters, it marked the first shutout in Iowa City Country history, not to mention the first complete game shutout.

Comments: it was a shame that either pitcher had to take the loss, as it was a great pitching duel.

    Meche's line: 8 IP; 4R, 6H

    Depablos' line: 9 IP, 0R, 5H, 6K

The Country got six hits in the game, three by Cust. 2 of the 3 other base hits in the game by anyone other than Cust where those of the players who loaded the bases – Hudson and Milledge.

GAME FOUR: Iowa City Country Jimenez (98 EB CB – two, CH – four) at Kansas City Royals Bannister (90 CA 2SF – one, CU – three, CB – two, CH – three)

Lineup: Erdos is being given the day off, replaced by Sweeney, who bats eighth and plays right field, while Spilborghs moves to leftfield

This game was a good, old-fashioned blowout, with the Country scoring early and often on their way to a 12-4 victory. The key inning was the 3rd, which went as follows:

Orlando Hudson approached the plate with Sweeney, who reached third, and McCurdy on base. Looking changeup, he got one and put it over the right-field fence for a three-run homerun. The Country then "repeated," as Milledge singled, took off for second and made it to third as Spilborghs knocked a pitch in to shallow leftfield, leaving runners at first and third for Jack Cust, who homered over the centerfield wall.

The Royals brought in Greinke to stop the bleeding, but after allowing a soft single to Johnson, Fields homered over the left field fence.

When Sweeney singled, took off for second and reached third when McCurdy singled, it appeared that they might "repeat" as Hudson came to bat. Hudson swung for the fences, but popped up into shallow centerfield; however, the Royals shortstop dropped the ball, allowing Sweeney to score and McCurdy to reach third. When Milledge lined out short, the Country had scored nine runs in the top of the 3rd.

The Royals picked up a couple of runs in the bottom of the inning, as Hamilton and Olivo scored on a Bullinger single. A DeJesus triple scored a third run, and the second inning ended with the Country leading 10 – 3

Comments: this may be the Country's first four game sweep; the country used power and speed, heading five homeruns (2 by Fields, 2 by Cust, 1 by Hudson), stealing three bases, and going from first to third at least three times. Strong defense and pitching was also highlighted throughout the game, as Jimenez pitched seven solid innings, allowing only three runs on 11 hits with four strikeouts. Josh Fields' eight homeruns leads major-league baseball, with Cust's six homeruns being good for second. With a seven – one record, the Country have the best record in baseball, ahead of several National League teams by one game, and ahead of the Yankees and Rays by two games.

4/10 – 12/2009: Iowa city country at Minnesota Twins: Series Review

GAME ONE SUMMARY: Country Bourgeois (90 DC SL – two, CU – three, CB – four, VSL – one) versus Twins Slowey (93 DB SL – three, CU – one, CB – one, CH – one)

Lineup: Dan Johnson, reporting in purple, has been sent down to the minors. Schrager has been recalled to the major-league roster, although he will likely stay on the bench and Harris will play first.

The Country took a 1-0 lead after 1, when Milledge singled, stole second, and scored on a Spilborghs single. The Twins tied the game in the 2nd on singles from Morneau, Perez and Punto, sandwiched around a fielders choice. The Country retook the lead for good the following inning, on singles from McCurdy, Spilborghs, and Cust, and a homerun by Fields on a low, inside fastball. A Jack Cust homer in the 7th and a 2-run Spilborghs double in the 9th put the game well out of reach, as the Twins did score 2 runs in the ninth, but never seriously challenged and the game ended with an eight – three victory for the Country.

Game 1 Comments: Orlando Hudson went 0/5; Milledge went 4/5 with two stolen bases and two runs scored. Spilborghs also had a solid game, going 3/5 with a double, a run scored, and three RBIs. Jack Cust was player of the game, going 4/5 with a homerun and two RBIs and two runs scored. Starting pitcher, Borgeois, allowed one run on seven hits over five innings with three strikeouts. Country relievers Stratton and Oliver combined to allow two runs in four innings on seven hits with three strikeouts.

GAME TWO SUMMARY: Iowa City Country Grindell (93 EC CU – four, CB – three, PA – three, HSK – one) versus Minnesota Twins Moyer (85 FB 2SF – two, CU – two, CB – one, CCH – three)

Lineup: Schrager plays first base in place of Dan Johnson and Towles catches, replacing McCurdy

Moyer was cruising through the Country lineup for 1-1/3 innings, using mostly circle changeups until Fields hammered one for a double. Fields moved to third on a fielders choice by Schrager and then started to come home on a wild pitch to Erdos. The catcher to retrieved the ball too quickly for Fields to make it home so he started to change direction and as the catcher threw to third, Fields changed back, charging full speed ahead to home plate, beating the relay throw from third and giving the Country a one – zero lead. The Twins took the lead in the 3rd when Lamb doubled home two runners, and then Lamb scored on a Mauer single. Several more singles brought home 2 runs and the Country called in Andrew "fireman" Brown, who closed out the third out with one pitch, but the Twins were up five – one. Brown seems in trouble in the 4th when the Twins loaded the bases with no one out, but Fireman Brown escaped the jam by getting Lamb to pop out to the catcher, striking out Mauer, and then getting Cuddyer to weekly ground the ball back to Brown.

The Country reduced the Twins lead in the 5th & 6th to 5-3, Milledge driving home Hudson, who singled and stole 2nd and Fields hitting a solo homerun, while reliever Oliver held the Twins in check. In the 7th, Cust stepped into the batters box representing the tying runner after Spilborghs singled. Cust was 0/3 so far, but hammered a fastball that Demster grooved down the middle of the plate for a game-tying two run homerun.

When the Twins threatened in the bottom of the seventh, putting runners at first and second with no out, Green relieved Oliver and got the first out of the inning before allowing an infield hit to load the bases with one out, but Hudson threw home on a ground ball for the second out of the inning and then a soft grounder to third ended the inning tied five – five

"Hit 'em wherenthey ain't" was the them of the 8th, as opposite field simgles by Huisman and McCurdy sent reliever Ryan Dempster to the showers in favor of Joe Nathan (98 BE HSL – five, CB – four). Hudson was fooled on a hard slider, but got the bat on the ball, which softly landed right in between the center and leftfielders, allowing Huisman to score easily and McCurdy and Hudson wound up on third and second with no one out. Like Hudson, Milledge did not hit the ball hard, but tapped an outside fastball into center field, bringing home both baserunners. Nathan retired's billboards on an infield groundout and cost hit into an inning ending double-play. When the Twins threatened with runners at first and second with one out and first and third with two out, but failed to score, the Country took an 8-5 lead into the 9th, which Chamberlain saved, retiring the Twins in order.

Game 2 Comments: Each of the Country's first three batters went 2/5 with one stolen base. Cust's only hit in five at-bats today was his game-tying homerun. Country starter Grindell was shaky, allowing five runs in less than three innings of work, but the Country relievers were flawless, with four relievers combining to shut out the Twins over 6 – 1/3 innings. Middle reliever Oliver was dominant, with 4 strikeouts in 2-2/3 innings.

Notable: Josh Fields, the 1st player in 2009 to hit 10 HRs, leads the league with a 1.08 slugging percentage. Three other players have slugging percentages of 1.0 or higher, including Jack Cust. Most surprising on the list is Astros catcher Brad Ausmus, whose offensive potential is E contact and power with D speed. Lastings Milledge leads major-league baseball with 10 stolen bases, 4 ahead of second-place Michael Young. Orlando Hudson, Ryan Spilborghs, and Ryan Sweeney are among the players tied for fifth with three stolen bases.

GAME THREE SUMMARY: Iowa City Country Lannan (89 EB SL – three, CB – four, CH – two) at Minnesota Twins Brazzell (93 DC SL – two, 2SF – two, FO – two)

Lineup: Schrager and Towles, again, start at first and catcher, respectively

The teams each scored a run in the 2nd, with Erdos driving home Fields, who had doubled, and Punto doubling home Morneau. The Country were lucky to minimize the damage in a 3rd inning when the Twins loaded the bases with one out and Justin Morneau singled home one runner, before a five – four – three double-play ended the third inning with the Twins leading two – one. Cust retied the game with one swing in the 4th; a home run off a first pitch forkball down the center of the plate. Fields then doubled (his ground ball rolling between the shortstop and second base and rolling all the way to the left center field wall) and scored on an Erdos single to right field. Towels then doubled home Erdos. Delmon Young singled home Perez with two out, and the 4th inning ended with the Country leading four – three.

Hudson led off the 7th with a single and went to third on Milledge's single. Spilborghs took Twins reliever Tom Gordon to a three – one count and then hammered a low fastball off the centerfield wall for a two run scoring double, and then Spilborghs scored easily on a deep single from Cust. This seven – three Country lead would be the final score, as neither team threatened again.

Game 3 Comments: the Country's offense was not overwhelming, but it was effective, as each of their first five batters scored at least once and their three, four, and seven hitters were each credited with two RBIs. Erdos had a particularly strong day, going 3/4 with a double, two RBIs, and a run scored. The Country's pitching was surprisingly effective as the Country were able to use just two pitchers in blue condition to finish off the Twins. Lannan was not sharp, but pitched a gutsy 5 – 2/3 innings, allowing three runs with four strikeouts. Deardorff was surprisingly effective, allowing no runs and striking out three over three – 1/3 innings.

No one but you would think of sending someone down because he felt bad.

I like the strategy though, gives other players a chance to play and the purple/blue guy some rest.

LOL. I know it's not realistic, but I figure If I know I'm not going to play him for a few days, may as well send him down. I didn't note it in my log, but I actually do that with pitchers when I have a bunch that are grayed out I'll send down the starter who just pitched In order to bring up a reliever to use in an emergency.

No offence, but that is a reall bad idea. Doesn't it take like 10 days to get a guy back from triple A?

I would never take offense, but it does not take 10 days. You can send someone down and bring back the next day.

My 1st season, I had my players play through purple, mainly cause my backups were terrible. But now, my backups are decent singles hitters, so when my main dudes are purple, I like changing things around and seeing what happens

Oh ok. In 2007 it takes 10 days to bring them back from triple A :( . Well good job on the log. Also why are you playing every game? I mean I like it but doesn't it get tiresome?

In chatting about how I'd do a log, a few posters mentioned trying to play every game. In that 1st season, there were a lot of early losses and then a lot of close games, all of which were fun. In my 1st few weeks of 2009 (I am about four games beyond what I posted so far), I won the vast majority of my games, but probably only two were easy wins. Most were won by four or fewer runs and a lot required me to come from Behind, so they are fun for me to play. I did sim my spring-training games.

If I start getting bored, probably the first thing I will do Is play the first two games of a three-game series and, if I win both, I will sim the third. If I lose one, I will play the third. The other thing I might do is to sim a series or more of the series against opponents that are low in their division.

If things are getting too easy and the above does not help, then I'll adjust the settings, probably by increasing my opponents hitting level to the max And I could probably also increase my opponents fielding abilities. One thing I don't think I can do is increase my opponents pitching anymore – I think I'm At the second highest level and at the highest level the computer moves the pitches around, pre-pitch and it hurts my eyes.

Also, if I have an outstanding trade or the draft is coming up, I might get impatient and Sim a few games to see whether the trade is accepted or to get to the draft more quickly.
