"Good luck today, Bryan." My good friend Jack Kent said before we took the field for the first day of tryouts.
I ran to my position, third base, and Jack was right behind me, in left field.
We were to do a typical infield/outfield drill, the coach would hit fly balls to the outfielders and some sharp grounders to us in the infield.
Jack was first. Coach hit a deep fly ball to him, but with his incredible speed he caught up to it no problem.
The rest of the outfielders took their turns, and only 2 of them misplayed the balls hit to them, but, to be fair, they were tough ones to catch.
I was first for the infield, and coach hit a rocket, right down the line.

What do I do?
A. Charge, and hope for the best
B. Wait it out, let it come to me, and then make the throw
C. Run away
D. Go home

I decided to let it come to me, and luckily, it was a nice, clean grounder. I fielded it, and threw it nicely to first.
The rest of the infield then had a go at it, and all did well, including the other third baseman, Lawrence Marlin, who's going to prove to be tough competition for me. If I'm to make the team, I've got to do better than him.

After the infield drills were done, the infield and outfield were split up, and we were to do some bunting drills.
Since I'm a sophomore, and there aren't any freshman who are good enough to make either JV or varsity this year, I was the youngest, and therefore, forced to go first.

We're doing a "bunt-for-a-hit" drill.
"Don't mess this up, we're going to be doing some bunting this season, so you'd better be good at it." Coach said, sternly.

What do I do?
A. Send it down the third base line
B. Send it down the first base line
C. Try and push it over the charging third baseman's head
D. Swing away

I bunted it down the first base line, but got too much of it, and was tagged out, easily, by the first baseman.
"Damn it Murphy, what are you doing?" Coach said.
"Sorry." I, sheepishly, replied

The rest of tryouts went fairly okay, but the bunting incident may have hurt my chances some.
The rest of the day was spent doing homework, along with eating, and browsing my beloved internet.

Day 2 of tryouts is tomorrow. Ooh boy.

"And don't forget to read up to page 140 of The Alchemist!" My English teacher said as the bell rang.
She was a cool cat, I have to say, even though she gave a lot of homework. Eh, whatever.
I went to my locker, grabbed my baseball stuff, and headed down to the locker room. I was getting changed when Lawrence walked in, he got changed next to me.
"Hey Murph, how's it hanging?" He asked
"Pretty good, and yourself?" I responded
"Fine, I suppose, though my knees really been acting up the last couple of days."
"Well, that's no good. What happened?"
"Not sure, it just started hurting this morning."
At this point, Jack was also in the room.
Being the medical prodigy he is, he responded with, "Maybe you hurt it in tryouts yesterday!"
"Yeah." Lawrence replied.
"Hey, everyone! Up to the gym, let's go!" Someone said, day 2 of tryouts were about to start.

I got up to the gym, and chatted with Jack for a while, and then coach walked in.
"Alright guys, easy day today, all we're doing is conditioning."
A simultaneous sigh from everyone was heard.
"I know, I know. But it's not completion we're looking for, it's effort. That will be taken into account more so than you being able to do more than the next guy. Baseball is a mind game, with some physicality thrown on, so, I don't expect all of you to be in the best possible shape."
"Wow, coach is a cool guy." I whispered to Jack
"Murphy, you're first, come with me."
Coach led me over to a corner with a rope.
I have to climb it.
Awesome.

I hopped onto the rope.
"Alright, go!" coach yelled
I started up the rope.

What should I do? (#of eval points potentially gained (success)/lost (failure))
A. Go as fast as possible to the top (+5, -5)
B. Take it slow (+3, -1)
C. Oh lord, everyone's watching me! (-20)
D. Go quick, and judge how it feels, and go from there (+2, -1)

I rushed up the rope, and made it to the top no problem.
I slowly descended back down to the bottom.
"Wow Murphy, that's a new record, 28 seconds on the nose. Good job!" Coach said
I gave a nice smile, and tried my best to hide the fact I was slightly wheezing "Thanks coach!" I said

"Alright, let's see, who's next? Kent, let's go."
Jack casually strolled up to the rope, and promptly broke my record. He got 26 seconds.
Damn.
"Jack, you just broke the record Bryan set! Impressive!"
Lawrence went next, and got 35 seconds.
The rest of the folks trying out went, and no one managed to beat Jack's time.

The next test was push-ups.
"You've got 2 minutes to do 50 pushups, and make sure that they're all perfect. No cheating! If I find you cheating, you'll be running a mile."

"Let's see, first group is... Murphy, Kent, Marlin, Daniels, and McDaniel."
I was to go first. Again.
Awesome.

What should I do?
A. Crank out all 50 in one go (+10, -5)
B. Do 30 in the first minute, and then 10 in the next 30 seconds, and 10 more to finish it up (+5, -2)
C. Cheat (-20)
D. Run a mile instead (+1, -1)

I went with the smart choice of conserving my energy, and not doing them all in a row.
I successfully completed all 50 of the push-ups. The only one in my group not to was McDaniel, but coach seemed not to mind, as McDaniel was trying, at least.

The third, and final, thing of the day was something that was called "Sorry, but you're probably not going to finish." Cathcy name, I thought
It was 20 push-ups, 20 sit-ups, and then 15 prisoner squats in 2 minutes, then 30 seconds of rest, then run half a mile, then a minute of rest, and then finish up with 5 50 yard sprints.
"Oh god." I thought
"Doesn't seem too bad." Jack said, with utmost confidence.
"Oh boy, not looking forward to this." Lawrence added.

"Alright, you 5, the ones who just went, go get a drink, and then we'll start this up. I hope you're ready." Coach said
We all went out, and took our turns at the water fountain, making sure not to drink too much, but still satisfy our thirst.

Then it was time for the final challenge of day 2. Let's do this.

What do I do?
A. Try hard (+10, -3)
B. Don't try hard (+1, -10)
C. Do them methodically, trying to conserve energy (+5, -1)
D. Go home, this is too hard for me (-20)
