July in Review

The Royals' month of July was a decent one. It was their worst month of the season as far as winning percentage and runs scored, but a good month overall. They went 15-9 (.625 winning percentage for the month), only scored 92 runs (139 in June), but only allowed 55 runs in the month (83 in June). Nick Johnson has cooled off over the past week, but is still having a good season overall. His batting average has dropped to .288, but he has 29 homers and 97 RBI with two months left to play in the season. Kyle Davies is on pace to win the Cy Young award easily. He has the most wins and best win-loss record at 14-3, as well as the best ERA in the majors at 1.71. He is also leading complete games with nine, and shutouts with seven. If the pitching continues the way it has since the All-Star break, the Royals will lock up a postseason spot way earlier than anyone else.

KANSAS CITY -- The Royals could not complete a comeback today against the Yankees as they get overpowered by the Bronx Bombers offense. The Yankees began their explosive offense in the second with a two-run double from Denham. He was followed by RBI hits by Johnny Damon and Clay Timpner. Khalil Greene provided a run for the Royals in the bottom of the inning with a sacrifice fly, but the Yankees added on two more in the third against Gil Meche on solo shots by Robinson Cano and Jason Giambi. The Royals made a rally in the fourth with three straight RBI doubles from Alex Gordon, Luke Umbria, and Chris Conti, as well as an RBI single by David DeJesus to make it a one-run game. Unfortunately, the Yankees were able to add on two more in the fifth with RBI hits from Jason Giambi and Denham. Alex Gordon got one of those runs back in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single, but Julio Lugo countered in the seventh with his own RBI single. The Royals got two in scoring position with no outs to start the ninth, but after Felipe Lopez hit a hard line drive to Alex Rodriguez at third who doubled off DeJesus at second, the Royals' hope was lost and they were unable to accomplish the comeback.
