Is it just me, or does everything automatically get more important when NYC or LA is involved? Because I've never seen a Category 1 Hurricane with more coverage than Irene before.

Yeah, if it's on a coast, it means seven times as much, because NYC and LA are, well, seven times more important than any other place in his country. For the media, at least.
