ALDS - Kansas City Royals (1-2) @ Boston Red Sox (2-1): Game 4
October 9, 2011

BOSTON -- The Royals found new life in the later innings as they send this series on to the fifth and final game. Alex Cora gave the Red Sox the lead in the third with an RBI single. Mark Teahen tied it in the fourth with a fielder's choice that scored a run from third. Nick Johnson also gave the Royals the lead with an RBI double, but Jason Varitek regained that lead for the Red Sox with a two-run double in the bottom of the inning. Kevin Youkilis added another in the fourth with an RBI groundout to make it 4-2. Khalil Greene made it a one-run game in the seventh with a solo shot over the monster in left. Then things began to go the Royals way in the ninth. Hideki Okajima came in to close out the series, but the Royals had other plans. Billy Butler led-off, but made an out. Alex Gordon then hit a single up the middle. Esteban German pinch-ran for him, and stole second. John Buck then made an out and the Royals were about to lose. Chris Conti extended it reaching base and now there were runners on the corners with two outs in the ninth for David DeJesus. DeJesus lined one hard to Cora at shortstop. Cora couldn't handle it cleanly, but deflected it. German scored and the game was tied. Felipe Lopez, Mark Teahen, and Nick Johnson all added on runs after that to take a three-run lead. Jason Varitek added one more for the Red Sox with a solo homer, but Soria came in and got the save to send this series to game five.

ALDS - Kansas City Royals (2-2) @ Boston Red Sox (2-2): Game 5
October 11, 2011

BOSTON -- THE ROYALS ARE GOING TO THE AMERICAN LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES! In an epic, well fought battle by both sides, the Royals barely edged the Red Sox today in a game where only a single run was scored. That run was scored in the eighth on an RBI triple. Chris Conti was on first, and Matsuzaka was showing signs of tiredness. DeJesus drilled a line drive that rolled to the deepest part of the park. Ellsbury got to it, threw it in, and the relay man fired it home but Conti just barely scored under the tag. Possibly the biggest hero of tonight's game was Kelvim Escobar. After getting roughed up in game one, he came out tonight, and pitched a complete game shutout. The only trouble he ran into was in the seventh. The inning started out with Manny Ramirez and Mike Lowell both in scoring position with no outs, but Escobar fought back, and with one of the most emotional strikeouts of the season, got Ellsbury swinging to end that seventh inning. The Royals will now head to the ALCS where the Yankees await.

Final Score:
Royals: 1
Red Sox: 0

WP - K.Escobar (1-1) | LP - Matsuzaka (0-1) | SV -
HR:

K.Escobar: CG, 6 H, 0 ER, 4 BB, 5 K
DeJesus: 1-4, 3B, RBI
Conti: 0-3, R

Matsuzaka: 7 2/3 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 K
Lowell: 1-4, 2B
Ellsbury: 1-3, 2B
