September in Review

The Kansas City Royals are headed to the postseason for the second season in a row. They finished the season great, going 20-8 in the month with a season high 113 runs scored in the month with only 75 runs allowed. A big part of those runs scored was their star rookie Chris Conti, who hit 5 homers and drove in 17 for the month as he wins rookie of the month honors. Nick Johnson, the Royals best hitter also finished with good stats. He finished with 29 home runs, and 119 runs batted in. As expected, David DeJesus led all the majors in stolen bases with 61. Joakim Soria also led all the majors in saves with 48. Kelvim Escobar was tied for third in wins in the majors with his 15-5 record. Kyle Davies led the majors in ERA with the only ERA under 2 at 1.99. The Royals steamed through September and hope to do the same in the postseason as they play the Red Sox in the first round.

ALDS - Boston Red Sox (1-0) @ Kansas City Royals (0-1): Game 2
October 6, 2011

KANSAS CITY -- The Royals have won game two with an incredible ending! Jacoby Ellsbury made it 1-0 Red Sox in the second with an RBI single. Nick Johnson tied it up in the fourth with a solo homer to center. The Royals scored two more in the fifth. David DeJesus got an RBI sacrifice fly, and the Red Sox shortstop Alex Cora committed a fielding error allowing a run to score from third. Khalil Greene blasted a solo shot in the sixth to cushion the lead to three. David Ortiz hit an RBI single and J.D. Drew an RBI double in the eighth to make it a one-run game. With the one run lead, the Royals still decided to bring in Joakim Soria to close it in the ninth. He couldn't do it. On the first pitch of the inning, Jason Varitek blasted it out to tie the game. The game went to the bottom of the ninth, and after getting the first two outs, Julian Tavarez was trying to send this one into extras. Chris Conti had other plans as he got a pitch that he hit to the opposite field and barely over the left-field wall to win the game for the Royals!
