Kansas City Royals (8-6) @ Detroit Tigers (7-7)
April 17, 2010

DETROIT -- Judging by the final score of this game, it would be hard to believe the Royals lead this game at one point. They scored the game's first run in the third with an RBI double off the bat of Alex Gordon. But Kyle Davies lost it in the fourth, allowing six runs before an out was even recorded in the inning and headed for the showers. Another run was scored charged to Davies after his departure for seven earned runs in three plus innings of work for Davies. The Tigers scored another that inning, and four more throughout the gamr for a 12-1 win over the Royals, again, in a game that the Royals once led 1-0.

Cleveland Indians (9-7) @ Kansas City Royals (8-8)
April 19, 2010

KANSAS CITY -- The Royals have ended their five game skid with a win in the opening game of this series against the Indians. The Royals struck first with an RBI single by Ross Gload in the second, but Victor Martinez tied it up in the fourth with an RBI single. Felipe Lopez gave the Royals a two-run lead in the fifth with a two-run shot to right, that hit sending Jake Westbrook to the showers. Travis Hafner brought it within one in the sixth with his own solo shot, but Jose Guillen got that run back in the eighth with HIS own solo homer. Then, in the ninth inning with two out and a runner on, closer Joakim Soria gave up the tying two-run home run to Casey Blake for a blown save. Luckily, he would get the win as the Royals score in the bottom of the ninth. Alex Gordon lead-off the bottom of the inning with a single. Joey Gathright pinch-ran for him and stole second. David DeJesus moved him over to third, and finally, Felipe Lopez hit a hard liner to center fielder Grady Sizemore, but it was enough to get Gathright home on a sacrifice fly to win the game.

Detroit Tigers (12-8) @ Kansas City Royals (11-9)
April 24, 2010

KANSAS CITY -- The Royals defeated the Tigers today to make a tie in the lead in the division with a close pitchers duel between Jeremy Bonderman and Brian Bannister. Both pitchers had three-hit shutouts going into the top of the eighth inning. That's when Brian Bannister finally gave up a solo home run to Ivan Rodriguez for the first run of the game. Jeremy Bonderman went out in the bottom of the ninth to finish off this 1-0 victory, but the Royals had other plans. Alex Gordon made an out to start the inning. Then, David DeJesus hit a grounder to short, but was safe at first on a throwing error by Ramon Santiago. DeJesus stole second, and Felipe Lopez hit into a fielder's choice, both runners safe. Finally, with Jeremy Bonderman as tired as can be, threw a weak pitch down the middle to Mark Teahen who got all of it, and cranked it out for a walk-off three-run homer.

Teahen to DL with Broken Collarbone

The Royals have taken a major blow with Mark Teahen going on the 15-day disabled list with a broken collarbone. The injury was suffered in the third inning of yesterday's game against the Rays when Teahen slid into third base on his two-run triple. The injury is expected to take a little over a month to heal, and he will likely be back with the club either at the end of May, or beginning of June.

:( Dang, hopefully you can manage without him until he gets back. Good luck.

Yeah. The only outfielder I have in the minors to call up is Justin Ruggiano. I'm going to have to put Gathright out in the outfield, which is a major downgrade offensively from Teahen.

April in Review

For the first time in a long time, the Royals find themselves in first place. They went 18-9 for the month and are two games up on the second place Tigers. They ended the month on an incredible seven game winning streak that they hope to continue into the month of May. Surprisingly, it is not the new acquisitions from this past winter that are doing all the work. They are getting plenty of offense from the guys who have already been on the team, including Jose Guillen and David DeJesus, who had a surprisingly good month with a .298 batting average and five home runs, second on the team behind Guillen. They also had good pitching this month as usual. Gil Meche has a 2.06 ERA going into May, and and Joikim Soria got eleven saves in twelve chances in the month of April. The Royals did suffer the loss of Mark Teahen who is expected to be out another four weeks, but they seem to be doing just fine without him for now. It will be interesting to see if the Royals can continue this success the rest of the way.

Davies would leave the game for Ramon Ramirez as the Red Sox put Coco Crisp in to pinch run. Ramirez gave up another hit to Varitek, moving Crisp over to third.
