Kansas City Royals (8-12) @ Detroit Tigers (13-7)
April 22, 2009

DETROIT -- Rookie phenom Anthony Ziegler earned his first big league win today as the Royals put a beating on the first place Tigers. The Tigers actually led to start the game, getting an RBI double from Miguel Cabrera in the first, and an RBI single from Curtis Granderson in the second. The Royals tied it up in the third with a two-run triple off the bat of Jose Guillen, and took the lead with an RBI single by John Buck. The Royals never trailed again in this game. They had a huge fourth inning scoring five runs including a bases-clearing triple by Felipe Lopez and a solo homer by Jose Guillen. With that home run, Jose Guillen was just a double away from the cycle in this game, but would fail to complete it in two later at-bats. The Royals would score two more in the seventh on a two-run jack by John Buck as the Royals pound the Tigers 10-4.

Kansas City Royals (9-13) @ Chicago White Sox (11-11)
April 25, 2009

CHICAGO -- The Royals have lost a very bizarre game in a windy city slug fest. Balls were just flying out of the park today. The Royals scored a run in the first on an RBI single by Jose Guillen, and went up by two in the second on a Billy Butler RBI groundout. The White Sox then tied the game in the bottom of the second on solo home runs by Jermaine Dye and Pedro Feliz. The Royals took the lead again in the third with an RBI single by Alex Gordon, but the White Sox reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the third on three solo home runs by Nick Swisher, Jim Thome, and Jermaine Dye. The Royals re-took the lead AGAIN in the fourth on two two-run homers by Tony Pena and Mark Teahen. Juan Uribe brought home a run in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI groundout, but Jose Guillen countered that run in the sixth with another RBI single. Jermaine Dye hit his third solo home run of the game in the sixth, but Ross Gload got that run back with his own solo shot in the seventh. The Royals were finally defeated for good in the seventh when the White Sox hit four consecutive home runs. Nick Swisher hit a two-run shot, followed by three solo-shots by Jim Thome, Paul Konerko, and Jermaine Dye, who had four in this game. At the end of the seventh, the score was 12-9 White Sox. The Royals reached double digits runs in the eighth with an RBI sac fly by Jose Guillen, but Carlos Quentin got that run back for the Sox with a solo home run in the bottom of that inning.Felipe Lopez got an infield RBI single to make it 13-11, and with two outs and runners on second and third, Mark Teahen, a triple away from the cycle came to bat, but hit a fly ball to left to end this wild game.

Ok, seriously... What the heck just happened? Was it possibly a windy day or something? I know Power Pros factors wind into games.

Can someone please tell me how this is possible?

I just simed a game against the Twins. I shut out the Twins, and I got one-hit. The only hit I got was a solo home run by John Buck. I had no walks, no errors, and yet a total of 25 at bats. Somehow, Billy Butler and Tony Pena only had two at-bats each instead of three. There were no substitutions. How is it possible to have 25 total at-bats for your team with no walks, no errors, and a solo home run being the only base runner for the team the entire game?

Because John Buck got a walkoff HR, so Butler and Pena didn't need to do their at-bats.

Oh, duh. I didn't check what inning he hit the home run, but that's the only explanation so it must have been a walk-off.

Wait, no that's not possible. I have Buck batting fifth, meaning if he hit the home run with a perfect game going, he had to do it in the eighth...

Oh! I got it! It was a home game, he hit it in the bottom of the eighth, and then the Royals didn't have to bat in the bottom of the ninth because they were leading.

Wow, that could make a good riddle.

Yes, 25 batters is the absolute minimum number of batters (on one team) that can come to bat in a game. That's awesome that you got it, I don't know but I don't think it has ever happened in a major league game.

Minnesota Twins (11-16) @ Kansas City Royals ( 11-16)

KANSAS CITY -- The Twins beat the Royals today in an low scoring, extra innings game. The run of the game wasn't scored until the second when Delmon Young got an RBI double. Now with the Royals down 2-0 in the seventh, David DeJesus got an RBI single to bring this game back within one. Then, in the bottom of the ninth, Alex Gordon led-off with a double. Gload moved him over to third with a sacrifice fly, and Butler got him in with an RBI groundout to tie the game. This game would go into extras, but it only took the tenth inning for the Twins to score the run that would win the game. Michael Cuddyer got an RBI double in the top of the inning, and Joe Nathan closed it out in the bottom of the tenth.

April in Review

The Royals did not have a very good month of April. They went 11-17, the fourth worst record majors. They are five games back of the division leading White Sox at Tigers, both at 16-12. The Royals pitching allowed just 110 runs, second best in the majors behind the Reds who allowed just 85 runs. But they were the major league worst in run production with just 91 runs scored in the month. Other division leaders include the Yankees in the AL East, and Mariners and Athletics tied for first in the AL West. In the National League, the Marlins and Phillies are tied at the top on the East, The Reds lead the Central, and the Rockies lead out West. It is only the first month, so races are still very close, and the Royals still have a chance to get back in it, but it looks like another typical under .500 season for the Royals of Kansas City.
