Padres August In Review

Even after a bad month of August at 12-15, the Padres are closer than they were at the end of last month and are now tied a top first with Arizona thanks to their 12-16 August. The offense was awful this month scoring a season low for a month with 109 in 27 games BUT they allowed just 117 runs, a season lowest in the month. But this may all mean nothing now as it all comes down to September to decide whether the fairy tale Padres can win the NL West. This month goes in the Padres favor for sure as they play just ONE over .500 team in the Brewers(who swept them in San Diego). But after that they play the Dodgers 9 times, the Nationals, Rockies, Giants and then the Pirates to end the 2008 season. It will be one heck of a month.

Y'know, I never thought about this until just now: It really must suck to be a bad team like the Nats or the Pirates in September. You're likely playing against teams in tight pennant races who want to skewer you and take three easy wins, while you have no fan support because you're 20 games out in the division. Plus, after you get beaten down, you don't get to go to the playoffs for it. Add that to the fact that the franchise is likely in turmoil, and I sure am glad I'm a Yankees fan.

Padres come back in 9th, win in 13 to sweep Dodgers

September 3 -- The Padres had to work for this sweep but they did it with a 13 inning win in Dodgers Stadium. The game went back and forth into the 9th where the Padres trailed 5-3 but they had one the amazing Adrian Gonzalez on the bench today. And with 1 on and 1 out in the 9th Gonzo came through with a pinch hit 2-run home run to tie the game at 5 and send it into extras. Into the 13th inning it went and it was Nick Hundley who came through with an RBI double to break the 5-5 tie and then after they intentionally walked Gonzalez for the 2nd straight at bat, Calix Crabbe drove in his 1st major league RBI with a double to make it 7-5. But Stauffer struggled in the 13th allowing an RBI single with 2 outs in the 13th to make it 7-6 and it put the tying run at 3rd with 2 outs. September call-up Joe Thatcher was able to come in and get Andre Ethier to end it though for the 3-game sweep that puts the Padres up 1 game in the West.

Padres take 3 of 4 with big day from Blanks

September 7 -- On the strength of 3 home runs, 2 by Blanks, the Padres were able to take three out of four in Milwaukee and take their biggest lead in the West with a 1.5 game lead. The Padres took a 1-0 lead in the 2nd with a sac fly by Hundley and then led 2-0 in the 4th on a home run by the home run leader Adrian Gonzalez, his 45th. But after Kyle Blanks would control the offense knocking a 3-run home run in the 5th to put them up 5-0 and then another 3-run home run in the 9th to make it a rout and a 9-1 game. Pitching wise the Padres got a terrific outing from southpaw Rich Hill who threw 8 innings and only giving up 1 run, an unearned run at that, while striking out 5 for his 11th win of the season.

My client, Kyle Blanks is glad he was able to provide so much in that win, and hopes to do so for the rest of the season. Anything he can do to get the Padres to the playoffs.

Padres manage to avoid sweep as Young goes the distance

September 10 -- The Padres managed to hold a 0.5 lead over the D-Backs in the West by avoiding a bump in their October quest by avoiding a sweep of the Dodgers. The Dodgers scored the 1st run of the game on an error by Everth Cabrera at shortstop to make it 1-0 in the 6th but the Padres took the lead as September call-up Colt Morton came through with a 2-run single to turn it around against spot start Jeff Weaver. The Padres added on with 2 runs in the 7th on a Venable sac fly and an RBI double by Chase Headley to make it 4-1. But the story today was Chris Young who gave up just 2 runs in the game and only 1 earned run overall as he went the full 9 innings for the complete game win which lowers his ERA down to 3.82.

Padres comeback thwarted by Giants as Giants perform shocking 4-game sweep

September 14 -- So many things have gone wrong in the last 4 days and even in the last week where they have just been swept in 4 games by the Giants and have overall gone 1-6 in a 7-game home stand to fall one game of the Diamondbacks in the NL West. Overall the Giants pounded 8 doubles and and 18 hits which is highlights by an amazing game by Aaron Rowand who went 6-6. The Padres were down 6-1 at one point but scored 3 runs in the 6th inning to make it a 6-4 game but the Giants would score 2 more in the 8th to make it an 8-4 game. But San Diego showed a lot of fight in this game when down 8-5 in the 8th, Chase Headley hit a big bases clearing 3-run double to tie the game at 8 which sent Petco Park into a frenzy. But in extras the Giants would score 3 runs off of Ryan Webb and although the Padres got a run in the 10th by a Gonzo home run, they would fall and would go into a 9-game road trip as a depleted bunch.

Padres set to get Hairston back
September 16 -- The Padres just got a whole lot more depth back as they activated Jerry Hairston Jr. off the 15-day disabled list. Hairston was injured for 32 days after crashing into a wall at Petco Park and injuring his collarbone. Although he will be able to play for the rest of September, he will not be allowed to play in the playoffs after missing the August 31 cut, that is if the Padres make it(1 GB AZ).

Wow, tough home stand.

And that sucks that you won't have Hairston for the playoffs. Maybe you can still make it without him.
