Padres win series on walk-off wild pitch

May 25 -- The Padres won in an odd way but they're willing to take it anyways as they take three of four from the Reds. The game remained a pitchers duel but Chase Headley came through in the 7th with a solo homerun to make it 1-0. Mat Latos was incredible tonight but with 2 outs in the 8th, he gave up an opposite field home run to Drew Stubbs which tied the game at 1-1. The Padres would then win it in the bottom of the 11th when there were 2 outs and runners at the corners and Arthur Rhodes uncorked a wild pitch to the backstop allowing the winning run to score.

Padres take tough loss in wild 18 inning affair

May 31 -- The game took 6 and a half hours, long enough for a 1:00 start to turn to night, but in the end the Padres offense put together a pitiful offensive effort that led to 11 hits in 19 innings. The first scoring came way back in the 4th with an RBI double by the NL RBI leader Aubrey Huff to make it 1-0 and it seemed that it was surely enough for Tim Lincecum, especially with 2 outs in the 9th. But he threw a hanging breaking ball that was crushed by Scott Hairston for a 2-out, 9th inning game-tying homerun to make it 1-1 and send it into extras. Both bullpens were incredible but both sides squandered their opportunities until finally the Padres scored in the 18th on a sacrifice fly. You would think that would be the final scoring but the Giants scored for the 1st time in 15 innings when Bengie Molina when deep to tie it off of Mike Adams. The game would finally end in the 19th on a walk-off homerun by Aaron Rowand to end a long day for the Padres.

Padres May In Review

The Padres finished with another mediorcre month but are still in the NL West race at 27-30, only 3.5 behind Arizona for first place. The Padres finished with the same amount of runs as they did in April but they allowed 12 less runs in May which is shown by improved starting pitching. The Padres offense had some stars in this month in Kyle Blanks and Adrian Gonzalez. Blanks hit 8 May homeruns and Adrian Gonzalez had an incredible month (see below) but they saw a big dropoff from Tony Gwynn who was great in April. Every starter except for Latos lowered their ERA this month with Garland being the biggest improvement. But the bullpen struggled more this month. Bell was still good but not like last month and Mike Adams, Luke Gregorson and Justin Hampson all struggled but Tim Stauffer continues to be an incredible story with a 0.51 bullpen ERA. For June, the draft will on June 10th and interleague play starts on June 13th in Cleveland.

Gonzalez wins player of the month with amazing May
Adrian Gonzalez was named the National Player of the month of June with a stellar month. Gonzo hit .381 with 12 homeruns and 23 RBI's and now leads the league in home runs. Gonzalez dragged this team throughout May with this incredible month after having a subpar April for him hitting .238 with 5 homeruns.

Padres offense explodes in the middle innings to sweep Cubs

June 4 -- The Padres completed a 3-game sweep of the MLB worst Chicago Cubs in a win that puts them over .500 at 31-30. The Padres scored 1st in the 4th inning with a 2-run shot by Scott Hairston and scored 7 runs between innings 4-6 for a 7-0 lead, Hairston homered twice in this span. Jon Garland was great tonight as he continues to be the Padres hottest pitcher as he went 7 scoreless inning giving up only 5 hits. But trouble came in the 9th with Tim Stauffer. He gave up a 2-run single to Jeff Baker, an RBI double by Xavier Nady and then an RBI groundout by Soriano made it 7-4. But Stauffer managed to get the final out but his ERA raised a whole point, 0.51 to 1.50.

Big 1st inning enough to sink Mets

June 8 -- The Padres 8-1 in July with a 6-5 win over the Mets. The Mets got off to a great start when Jose Reyes led off the game with a home run to left but the Padres had the answer. Gonzalez tied it with an RBI double in the bottom of the 1st, Headley drove him in and then Nick Hundley had the biggest hit of the inning, a 3-run shot to make it 5-1 against Johan Santana. The Mets fought back with an RBI single by Barajas in the 2nd and in the 5th Carlos Beltran hit a 2-run shot to put them within a run and make it 5-4. But San Diego got an insurance in the 7th on an RBI single by Chris Denorfia to make it 6-4 and that would be the deciding run as with 2 outs in the 9th, Jose Reyes drove in a run on an infield hit to make it a 6-5 game but Heath settled in and got Frank Catallanatto and Luis Castillo to strike in the inning to finish of a series win over the New York Mets.

Padres Draft 2008
The annual MLB draft took today and the Padres selected two promising players, LHP Mike Barnwell and 3B Eric Porter. Porter was signed first and has power potential at 21 years old. The other players, Barnwell, can be used later in the year as he is already 25 years old so you could see his name as a lefty specialist in only a few months.

Padres offense kept in check as Dodgers try to cool down Padres

June 11 -- The Padres have been the hottest team in baseball with a 10-1 record in July but the Dodgers were able to steal a win. The Padres would score first as Tony Gwynn Jr would fist a single past Casey Blake with the infield in to make it 1-0 in the 3rd. The Dodgers would tie and take the lead in the 6th though on an RBI double by Casey Blake and then Clayton Kershaw would hit a bloop single that normally would have been caught at 2nd base but the infield was playing in and it was just out of the reach of Eckstein. The Padres came very close to tying it in the 7th when Morse blasted a double into the gap with 2 outs and a man on first but Kemp played the bounce of the wall and Furcal threw a beautiful relay throw home to get the potential tying run at the plate and keep it 2-1. The Dodgers pretty much iced it in the 8th when Andre Ethier and Manny Ramirez went back to back to make it 4-1.

Back and forth game ends in tough loss for Friars

June 13 -- After a combined 33 hits between two teams and 3 Indians comebacks, Cleveland was able to win it with an extras inning walk-off. The Indians got off to a 1-0 lead in the 1st with an RBI double by Grady Sizemore. The Padres would take the lead in the 3rd inning with a home run by Torrealba and later in the inning an RBI single by David Eckstein made it 2-1 against Indians starter Fausto Carmona and they would take a 4-1 lead into the 7th. Clayton Richard was pitching very well in this one but was chased as Austin Kearns homered to lead off the bottom of the 7th to make it 4-2. The Indians would then tie it against Ryan Webb as Russell Branyan singled in a run and later in the inning so would Andy Marte to make it 4-4 but Adrian Gonzalez doubled in the go-ahead run in the 8th. In the bottom of the 8th with 1 out and the bases loaded, Tim Stauffer looked to get out of a big jam but instead uncorked a wild pitch to make it 5-4 but he would get out of the inning and the game would go into extras. In the top of the 10th though Matt Stairs would come through his 7th home run of the season as tonight DH for the Padres to give them another lead. But Heath Bell would go on to blow his 3rd save of the season in the 10th. Mike Redmond hit a sacrifice fly with 1 out in the 10th to tie it and with 2 outs Matt LaPorta sent everyone home happy with a walk-off double.

Sabathia dominates Padres for complete game shutout

June 17 -- It was a tough day for Padres hitters as CC Sabathia stifled San Diego throwing 110 pitches in a complete game shut out allowing just 7 hits. The Yankees scored 4 runs in the game for Sabathia. They scored first on a Posada double in the 4th inning and then used the long ball later in the game as Nick Swisher hit a 2-run shot in the 6th inning and Curtis Granderson put the icing on the cake with a 7th inning home run to make it 4-0.

Hairston's Big Day keeps Padres rolling

June 24 -- Hairston's average is only around .250 but he has been a game-changer at times during a surprise season for San Diego and in a 4 RBI effort he led the Padres to another win that puts the Padres two games behind Arizona. The Twins got off to a 1-0 lead in the 3rd inning on an RBI single by Orlando Hudson but the Padres would get in back in the bottom frame to with an RBI single by Scott Hairston. Scott Hairston was not done though as in the 5th inning, he hit the biggest hit of the game with a 3-run bases clearing double to make it 4-1 Padres against Minnesota ace Scott Baker(3.41 ERA). The Padres proposed ace fired 7 innings allowing just the one run as he lowered his ERA to 4.17 which is around 2.00 points back from early May. But the Twins staged an 8th inning rally against Justin Hampson which was capped by a 3-run shot by J.J Hardy to make it a 5-4 game after Cabrera homered in the 6th for the Padres. But the 1-run lead with be held onto as Bell would retire the Twins 1-2-3 for the save and a Padres victory.

Rockies Bomb Young with 4 homeruns for easy win

June 30 -- A great month ended on a not so great note as the Rockies won 6-2. The story of the game was the home run for sure as Brad Hawpe homered in the 1st inning to make it 1-0 and Tulowitzki hit a 2-run shot in the 2nd inning to make it 3-0. The Padres would answered back in the 3rd with a home run by Denorfia but would not great any closer as Mora would homer in the 5th and Tulowitzki would homer for a 2nd time in the 5th inning to make it 6-0 against Chris Young who gave up a career high 4 home runs en route to a 6-2 loss.

Padres June In Review

The Padres surged through June going 18-9 in the month to put the Padres with 2.5 games of the Arizona Diamondbacks in the NL West, a division that has turned into a 2-team race pretty much. The Padres only went 9-6 in interleague play in June but went 9-3 against the NL and they ended interleague play overall at 9-9. The Padres surged in the month with another good month from the rookie Blanks and also Nick Hundley has emerged as a rookie of the year candidate with 9 home runs and a .333 average. This was all part of an offense that scored 143 runs in this month which was the most this season in one month by 23 runs. Looking into July the annual all-star game will be held in New York this year with Padres nation failing to get the home run leader Gonzo as the starting first basemen. It has yet to be seen if the Padres can keep this success up but they'll have to play better on the road, they are only 14-23 on the road against a 31-16 record at Petco Park.
