Stairs a hero on mothers day to complete Colorado sweep

May 11 -- For the 1st time this season, you can the Padres are hot as they have completed a sweep of Colorado have gone 5-1 since being swept in Florida, but this was wasn't easy. The Padres got off to a good start against Josh Newman with a 2nd inning longball from Blanks and then RBI singles by Gonzo and Hairston in the 3rd. Jon Garland had maybe his best start of the season today only allowing runs on a 2-run triple in the 6th to Carlos Gonzalez, but that was big making it 3-2. But Garland's effort would not result in a win. With a 2-run lead in the 9th, Heath Bell came in and blew his 1st blown save of the season. He gave up a 2-run double to Dexter Fowler to tie it and then Ian Stewart would single in a run with a pinch hit single to make it 5-4 Rockies in the 9th. But the Padres rallied against Street when after 2 hits, Matt Stairs came in to pinch hit with 1 out. He would come through with a 3-run, pinch hit, come-from behind walk-off homerun to give the Padres the win on Mother's Day. With this win, the Padres are now at .500 and only 1 game behind Arizona in the West in a year when the NL West has been very weak. But what we learned today: In case of emergency, use (the)Stairs.

Gonzo wins player of the week with blazing week
May 12 -- Adrian Gonzalez, who has led the charge for the Padres offense got what he deserved today after he teared through NL pitcher during the week of May 5-11. He won player of the week going an insane .643 with 3 HR and 7 RBI as he collected hit after hit for the whole week. Gonzalez was struggling hitting around the .240 range at times but is now up to .315 and 10 homeruns after a great week that has the Padres within a game of the D-Backs.

Haha I found a sign like this watching a Phillies game. It's extremely clever so I thought of it as a great time to throw it out there in one of my game logs  Although it's rephrased in this shirt...

As Gonzo's agent, I am overjoyed with the news of earning this honor. Keep up the good work!

Padres able to split series with Cubs on Young's gem

May 15 -- The Padres managed to avoid losing a 4 game series to the worst team in the NL as they beat the Cubs on the 4th and final game of the series on a windy day in Wrigley. The game remained scoreless into the 4th inning until Scott Hairston hit a towering 2-run shot to make it 2-0 and then 3-0 as Kyle Blanks made it back-to-back homeruns against Tom Gorzellanny. Alfonson Soriano made it closer in the 6th with a solo homerun against Chris Young who had one of his better starts this season with just 1 run in 6 innings. In the 7th, San Diego broke it open turning a 3-1 lead into 6-1 with RBI singles by Mike Morse and David Eckstein and a run scoring double play. Soto homered in the 7th to make it 6-2 and Ramirez homered in the 9th to make it 6-3 on a day where 5 combined homeruns were hit but the homeruns were not enough for Chicago as Gorzelanny fell to 0-7 on the season.

Interleague Play 2008

The Padres will get ready for their first dose of interleague play as they fly out to Seattle to play the Mariners. Interleague play is always one of the best times of the year and it also means that the Padres will get to use the DH in American League ballparks which means more time for guys like Matt Stairs. This first interleague action is just for 3 days from May 16-18 as interleague really begins in June. This year the NL West players teams mainly from the AL Central as in the Tigers, Twins and Indians. They also play the Mariners 6 times as somewhat as an NL/AL rivalry and they also get a visit into Yankees Stadium against New York. Below is the schedule:

@ SEA (May 16-18)
@ CLE (June 13-15)
@ NYY (June 17-19)
vs DET (June 20-22)
vs MIN (June 24-26)
vs SEA (June 27-29)

Padres recall Richard from DL, send down Gregorson
May 15 -- Today the Padres recalled LHP Clayton Richard from the disabled list after he was rehabbing from his elbow pains. Instead of Wade LeBlanc being sent down, the Padres instead sent down RHP Luke Gregorson. Gregorson had been struggling with a 6.14 ERA and LeBlanc had a 2.63 ERA making a few starts. One of the main reason's he's staying up is because the Friars had only one lefty in their bullpen and LeBlanc can stay up as that 2nd lefty while making spot starts.

Lopez drives in 3 as Mariners win interleague opener

May 16 -- The Padres first day of using a DH didn't do much as they only compiled 6 hits and 1 run in a 4-1 loss to the Mariners. The Padres scored 1st in the 2nd inning on another homerun by Kyle Blanks but the M's countered with a sac fly by Jack Wilson in the bottom of the 2nd. Clayton Richard made his 1st start off the disabled list and did well besides a few bumps and Jose Lopez drove in the go-ahead runs in the 6th inning off of him with 2 outs to make it 3-1. Lopez would then drive in another run in the 8th inning off of Hensley to make it 4-1 and Aardsma would save his 14th game to give Seattle the win.

Padres turn triple play but lose 4th straight

May 19 -- The Padres up and down season continued with their 4th straight loss. The Padres took the 1-0 lead in the 1st inning with an RBI single by Scott Hairston but that would be the only time in the game they would have a lead as Colby Rasmus homered in the 2nd to make it 2-1 St Louis. But the Padres became part of rare history fame today as they turned a triple play in the 3rd inning when Headley tagged a runner, threw to 2nd, who then fired to first to complete the 3-out play. But that was the highlight as homeruns killed San Diego again. The Cardinals broke it open in the 6th inning with a 3-run shot by Ryan Ludwick and then in the 8th he would homer again, a 2-run shot, to make it 7-1 and they would go on to win 8-2 on another frustrating day when the Padres get 10 hits, they could only score 2 against Brad Penny.
