Struggling Thatcher sent down to AAA for Hensley
April 25 -- After giving up 3 runs in the 12th inning of a 6-3 loss to the Giants,
the Padres have sent down sidearm LHP Joe Thatcher to AAA Portland.
Thatcher's ERA was up to 11.00 after the loss to San Fransisco and was 1-3 on the season.
RHP Clay Hensley will be called up from Portland after sporting a 1.45 ERA as the AAA closer.

Easy win overshadowed by injury to Richard

April 26 -- The Padres are over .500 for the 1st time since being 3-3 but the biggest story is Clayton Richard who was dominant through 5 2/3 innings but had odd pains in his elbow which seems like an injury. The same thing happened to Correia but that was arm fatigue. But Richard only allowed 1 run, an unearned run, that was in the 2nd inning after a bad throw from Cabrera scored a run but the Padres dominated after that. Everth Cabrera drove in the tying run in the 3rd inning and they scored 3 more runs in the 4th inning off of Ian Kennedy with a 2-run homerun by Gonzalez and an RBI single by Tony Gwynn Jr. who continues to hit well. The Padres broke it open in the 6th inning with a 3-run homerun by rookie catcher Nick Hundley and then Hundley would double in a run to make it 8-1, Hundley had a career high 4 RBI's. The D-Backs tried to fight back late when Justin Upton unloaded off of Tim Stauffer to make it 8-2 and in the 9th, Clay Hensley who was just called up gave up a longball to Chris Young and an RBI double to Adam LaRoche to make it 8-4 but he would get through the inning to finish off the game.

Richard to DL with Elbow Pains
April 27 -- One day after coming out of the game with pains in his elbows, LHP Clayton Richard is headed to the 15-day disabled list with elbow pains. Richard is 2-2 this season with a 5.18 ERA but has pitched much better as of late with wins in his last 2 starts. LHP Wade LeBlanc will be called up from AAA to replace him. If LeBlanc is able to pitch well enough he may be able to replace Joe Thatcher as the second lefty in the bullpen behind Justin Hampson. The injury to LeBlanc is expected to take 16 days to heal.

by the way, does anyone have good CPU hitting settings? Right now I'm experimenting using All-Star hitting and Lock-on 1 with them so they hit the ball harder and I could K more guys(I was getting a lot of weak groundballs outs with my old settings which were Powerful hitting and Normal lock-on)

But I still struggle to get strikeouts, the Padres don't really have a guy with great breaking balls but does anyone have good tips for strikeouts?

Padres end month on 3-game skid with walk-off loss to Phillies

April 30 -- The Padres ended a back and forth month on a 3-game losing streak falling 5-4 to the Phillies in 10 innings. The Phillies struck first against struggling Padres starter Kevin Correia with a 2-run homerun by Ryan Howard to make it 2-0 in the 1st. The Padres scored their first run against a sharp Cole Hamels in the 6th when the little man David Eckstein showed his rare power hitting his 1st homerun of the season to make it a 1-run game. But that would 1-run deficit would be short lived as Rollins homered to make it 3-1 in the bottom of the 6th and Ryan Howard hit an RBI double to make it 4-1. Despite those 2 rough inning Correia pitched pretty well silencing Philadelphia for all but 2 innings. The game appeared to be won in the 9th with 2 outs and 1st and 3rd when Brad Lidge only needed to get one out in a 3-run game. But Tony Gwynn Jr continued his hot hitting with an RBI single and Jerry Hairston followed with an RBI single of his own to make it 4-3 and the tying run at 3rd. Chris Denorfia then delivered off the bench with a pinch hit 2-out game tying single to tie the game at 4-4 giving Brad Lidge his 1st blown save of the season. But the Phillies would win it in the 10th when the usually effective Ryan Webb gave up a walk-off single to Chase Utley to give them the 5-4 win, it also showed the need for a bullpen lefty as Hampson was already used in the bullpen earlier in the game giving them no available lefty reliever to face Utley and Howard and Ibanez who were after.

Padres April In Review

The Padres finished the first month of the season at 13-15 but are only 3 games out of 1st place behind the Arizona Diamondbacks. The pitching just hasn't been good enough this month with a 4.89 ERA for a team that was bent on pitching and defense. 3 of their 5 starters have struggled mightily for unknown reasons while Mat Latos and Clayton Richard has pitched well and Richard is on the DL. The Padres have struggled to get consistency from their hitting as they are 28th in the majors in runs scored and have only one guy hitting over .300 and that is Tony Gwynn Jr. who has been a great surprise so far. As far is the team has gone, the team suffered a 5-game and 3-game losing streak within April and had two 3-game winning streaks as their longest streaks. Most of the Padres struggles have come on the road this year where they have gone 4-9 but have gone 9-6 at Petco Park. The one bright spot for the Friars has been their bullpen. It's a staff led by Heath Bell who was the NL pitcher of the month going 9/9 for save opportunities and a 1.17 ERA. The rest of their bullpen has been excellent as well which have been Ryan Webb(1.76 ERA), Tim Stauffer(1.17), Justin Hampson(3.18), Mike Adams(3.78) and Luke Gregorson(4.00). It's only April and there is plenty of time to improve but the season doesn't look too bright if the rotation continues to struggle.

Get guys with good breaking balls.

But seriously, be creative and unpredictable, ESPECIALLY with changing speeds. Say you had a guy with fb-cb-chg. You could do chg-cb-fb, and on the next at-bat, fb-fb-cb. And NEVER, EVER give up a hit on an 0-2 pitch. Waste a fastball up, for instance, or drop a curve/sinker low and away. Sometimes you get lucky and they swing. One time, it was 0-2, and there was a fast guy on first. I went for a pitchout, and he swung at it! I don't remember whether I got the runner or not, but I remember feeling so awesome that I got the K.

Scott loves how he's preforming in the 4 hole. Jerry wants to know how many games he's played in and how many ABs he has.

Well, the real story is that Mr. Leo wants to know how many game's Jerry's played, but Jerry is apparently too busy to tell him.

Bullpen implodes late for blowout loss

May 3 -- The Padres bullpen blew up for 9 allowed runs today, all by 2 players. The Padres took an early lead to the NL best Marlins in the 1st inning by a solo shot by Gonzalez to make it 1-0. Wade LeBlanc made his 1st start of the season and was impressive giving up only a solo shot in the 4th but the Padres retook the lead in the 6th on Gonzo's 2nd shot of the day, a 2-run shot making it 3-1. But Mike Adams gave up 3 runs in the 7th inning in an ugly outing but only down 4-3 going into the bottom of the 8th, Luke Gregorson got absolutely pounded by a deep Florida offense as he got lit up for 6 runs in 0.1 innings. After the 10-3 loss, all I can say is Adams and Gregorsons ERA's expanded.

Padres unable to sweep with frustrating loss

May 8 -- The Padres attempt for their 1st sweep of the season didn't happen as they loss the 3rd and final game of the series against a 14-21 Atlanta Braves team. Adrian Gonzalez singled in a run to put the Padres up 1-0 in the 1st inning but Atlanta came back later with 3 runs in the 3rd off of Mat Latos by a 2-run single by Jason Heyward and an RBI double by Nate McClouth to make it 3-1. After Escobar doubled in a run in the 5th, Kyle Blanks homered on a 2-run shot in the 6th to make it a 4-3 game but they would fall 6-3 as McCann also homered later in the game. Matt Stairs was the tying run at the plate in the 8th with 2 outs and 2 on but popped out to end the threat, The Padres had 16 hits but scored only 3 runs large in part to they had only ONE extra base hit, the 2-run homerun by Kyle Blanks. They couldn't do much on a day where Derek Lowe was dominate most of the afternoon throwing 8 solid innings.
