Power Bats Come Through As Pirates Prevent Sweep

August 18 -- The Pirates have had their struggles against the now NL West leading Giants, they are 1-4 against them but the Pirates prevented a sweep today on Sunday Night Baseball on ESPN. The Giants were able to get Rich Blackburn's pitch count up in the 1st inning but they only got 1 run out of it from an RBI by Aaron Rowand. After that it was all Pirates. Jayson Werth hit his 8th August homerun in the 4th inning to tie the game and two innings later, Jones hit a 2-run homerun and Ikari hit a solo homerun to make it 4-1 at that point. Baldelli would single in a run in the 8th inning to end the scoring and the bullpen went 4 scoreless innings to secure a 5-1 win.

Brewers Score 7 in the 6th To Take Series From Pirates

August 27 -- The Brewers managed to gain a little ground in this series by taking two out of three from Pittsburgh. Bill Hall hit a 2-run shot in the 1st inning to give the Brew Crew a 2-0 lead but that would be taken away in the 3rd inning by a 2-run homerun by McCutchen to tie it at 2-2. The Pirates scored 3 times in the 4th while the Brewers scored once in the 4th to make it 5-3 Pirates at that point but in the 6th the game just went away from the Pirates. A wild pitch scored a run, an infield single by Hardy tied the game at 5-5. But then they took big bites from their big boppers, a 2-run single by Prince Fielder gave them a 7-5 lead and Ryan Braun had the emphasis run with a 3-run homerun to cap a 7-run 6th inning rally to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 10-5.

thanks gocubs

but wow I wouldn't have guessed it would have taken 2 hours to look at everything unless you read every game summary as well

I think one day I'm just going to look at every game log here and figure out my win-loss record for this whole log

Well I bothered to go back and tally up the wins and losses from game logs from 2008-2011, it may be a little off but it might not be

2008: 24-13

2009: 18-13

2010: 22-15 (Includes 1-3 in postseason)

2011: 31-22 (Includes 8-8 in postseason)

Late Homeruns Not Enough For Nationals Against Pirates

August 27 -- The Pirates came into today having lost four of their last five but every good tea will have slumps and the Pirates broke out of it today with a win in Washington. Fontenot launched a 2-run homerun in the 1st inning and Ryan Doumit singled in a run off of Lannan to take a 3-0 1st inning lead against the 3-8 John Lannan but the Nationals came back with 2 of their own on RBI singles by Jorge Cantu and Adam Dunn but Anibal Sanchez and Lannan both settled down after rough starts. But in the 7th inning, Asdrubal Cabrera continued to make trading for him look genius with a 2-run homerun off of Lannan who was still in the game to make it 5-2 and Pearce doubled in a run in the 8th inning which would give them a 6-2 lead which they brought into the 9th inning. Denny Bautista came into the game in the bottom of the 9th and surrender an opposite field homerun to Dmitri Young on a 99 MPH fastball to make it a 3-run game. So the Pirates brought in Street but he also gave up an opposite field homerun, this one by Elijah Dukes to make it 6-4. But Huston would get the next three outs on ground outs to Fontenot to secure a 6-4 in the national's capitol.

Pirates Choose Zagurski For Potential Playoff Roster
August 31 -- The Pirates have chose LHP Mike Zagurski over LHP Carmen Pignatiello for the lefty reliever in the potential playoff roster. The Pirates had to make a decision today whether Zagurski or Pignatiello would be on the rosters and they chose the veteran Zagurski. Zagurski was sent down earlier this season after posting a 9.00 ERA in just 2 innings and they wanted him to work on a few things while Pignatiello would get a chance after having a very good 2009 season for the Pirates a few years ago but this year he had posted a 12.2 ERA. So Pignatiello will be left of the postseason roster and Zagurski will be on it, but the Pirates will have to make the postseason first.

McCutchen Gets Hit Number 1000 As Pirates Roll

August 31 -- The Mets aren't how they used to with only 71 wins this season and the Pirates had no trouble defeating their postseason foe 7-4 at New York. Jeff Francouer hit a sacrifice fly in the 1st inning to go ahead 1-0 against Lohse but Pirates bats exploded after. Andrew McCutchen would get his 1000th hit of his big league career with an RBI double but a wild throw home by Castillo would allow another run to score to make it 2-1 and by the 4th inning it was 7-1 Pirates who teed off of Mike Pelfrey. The Mets lone rally would come in the 6th inning when Schneider, Castillo and Maza would all single in runs to cut the lead to 7-4 but that wouldn't be enough against the Pirates.

Pirates August In Review

The Pirates have begun to prepare for September as they hold a 6 game lead over the wild-card leading Cubs. The Pirates went 16-11 in August thanks in part to scoring the most runs in the NL in August with 160 for a monthly high for Pittsburgh. Their offense was led by Garrett Jones, Jayson Werth and Susumu Ikari. Ikari his 8 homeruns in August, Jones hit 11 and Werth hit 10 homeruns for some staggering numbers from the 3 players in August. The pitching continues to hold up as the bullpen had an improved month and the starters continue to be reliable especially after picking up Rich Blackburn. At second base, Mike Fontenot had a nice enough month to get his starting job back for now. Pearce and Vazquez have both been sparks off the bench and especially last month in August, both have high averages but Pearce has had more time but he was only on pace to hit 9 homeruns if he played everyday

It is also time for September call-ups so here they are:

P - Evan Meek
P - Mike McConnell
P - Carmen Pignatiello
P - Ross Glanville
C - Robinzon Diaz
2B - Luis Rivas
OF - Justin Ruggiano
1B/OF - Jeff Salazar

Weeks Propels Brewers To 12 Inning Win

September 3 -- The Brewers came out of a wild back and forth 12 inning game with a win thanks to Ricky Weeks' two homerun performance. It was all Brewers early on, Prince Fielder hit a 3-run homerun off of Anibal Sanchez in the 1st inning and Bill Hall singled in a run in the 2ND inning to make it 4-0 against Sanchez who struggled today despite striking out 10 hitters. But the Pirates rallied to take the lead down 4-1 in the 3rd inning with a game tying 3-run shot from Jones and then a homerun by Baldelli made it 5-4 Pirates, Brandon Webb gave up 5 runs today but only 1 was earned because of a key error by J.J Hardy in the 3rd inning. In the 6th, the Brewers tied it but the Pirates regained the lead in the bottom of the 6th with an RBI by Jayson Werth and the game was tied again in the 7th with a solo shot by Ricky Weeks to make it 6-6. The score remained scoreless into extras and into the 12th inning. Garrett Jones had an error to let the first hitter reach and then Weeks unloaded off of Kevin Gregg to give the Brewers an 8-6 lead with his 2-run shot. The Pirates rallied with an RBI by Baldelli in the bottom of the 12th to make it an 8-7 game but Ryan Doumit struck out with runners on the corners to end the game. The Cubs also lost today so the Pirates lead remains 5 in the Central.

Paulino Dominates Pirates On 9/11 Anniversary

September 11 -- The Astros have not had much to cheer about this season despite having Hunter Pence and MacCrae(E con, C pow, 2 TRJ) who has had a breakout season(25 HR, .296 AVG, 102 RBI) but they got something to cheer about with a great outing from Felipe Paulino on the 11th year anniversary of 9/11. It was a tale of two stories for Paul Maholm today, MacCrae, Bourn and J.R Towles all singled in runs to make it 3-0. But despite giving up 6 hits in the 1st inning, Paul Maholm didn't allow a baserunner in the next 6 innings. But this day went to Felipe Paulino who went 8 1/3 shutout innings while Jack Cassel got the 2-out save to give the last place Astros a win against the first place Pirates. But the Pirates fall to 4-6 in September which isn't good considering the Pirates have played their worst baseball in September since 2009 but the cubs failed to convert on this and fell to the Cardinals, a win would have put them 2 games behind and in 2 more games these two teams will play at Wrigley Field for a 3-game series.

Red-Hot Pirates Rally Late to Sweep Cubs

September 16 -- The Pirates came into today 4 games ahead of the NL Wild Card leading Cubs and they will leave Chicago with a 7 game lead and 7 game magic number after sweeping Chicago with a late rally. Blackburn got off to a bad start in the 1st inning with a 3-run homerun by Alfonso Soriano but he settled down and allowed nothing after that homerun. The Pirates started their rally in the 3rd inning with a homerun by Doumit and the Pirates made it a one-run game with an RBI by Pearce in the fourth inning. The Cubs kept the Pirates off the board until with two outs in the 8th inning down 4-2, Susumu Ikari hit a game-tying 2-run homerun off of Carlos Marmol to make it 4-4 and a few hitters leader Asdrubal Cabrera would contribute with a go-ahead single to make it 5-4 in the 8th. Jones singled in a run in the 9th to make it a 2-run game which would be very key as Soto would homer with 1 out in the 9th to make it 6-5 but Street would prevail to get his 43th save of the 2012 season.
