2011 World Series Game Five

Pirates Season Comes Crashing Down As Chicago Wins First World Series since 2008

October 28 -- The Pirates great run came to an end as the Chicago White Sox with a 9-7 win are the World Champions of 2011. Anibal Sanchez tried to come out on short rest but could not as he had to leave the game in the 2nd innning with fatigue issues, it was either him of Jeff Karstens for this game. Ramirez hit a 1st inning homerun for the White Sox but the Pirates responded against Knuckleballer Charlie Haeger with a homerun by Garrett Jones and an opposite field 2 run homerun by Ikari to make it 3-1. But it was not meant to be, down 3-2 in the 4th inning, Jeff Karstens struggled in the 5th inning and Chicago got an RBI single by Quentin to tie the game and then Paul Konerko hit a big homerun to lead 6-3, it leads the question of where does Jeff Karstens fit on this team when he struggles to be a relief pitch with a 36 ERA this postseason and was not trusted as the game 5 starter. But anyways, Amezaga put Pittsburgh within one run in the 6th inning with a 2-run single and a 6-5 game and they would go on to make it 6-6 with a sacrifice fly. But Bautista could not get it done in the bullpen with a sac fly by Thome to make it 7-6 and then a 2-run double by Carlos Quentin make it 9-6. Jayson Werth homered with 2 outs in the 8th inning to make it 9-7 so Bobby Jenks came in for the last 4 outs of the game. But it was not easy in the 9th inning, there were two runners on for the Pirates trying to save their season but Steve Pearce lined out to Ramirez who doubled off Ryan Doumit at second base by tagging him out, and clinch the world series title. It was only fitting that Ramirez ended the game with the double play as he was the World Series MVP after a great last 3 games of this world series.

That stinks man, too bad. I hate how pitchers can't go out on short rest in this game.

Pittsburgh Pirates Season In Review

The Pirates will have to admit that this season was great although the ending in Game 5 of the World Series was not so great. The Pirates managed to win their first division title since 1992 with a 93-69 record, they beat the Marlins in 5 games in the NLDS, and they beat the Mets in the NLCS in 6 games before falling to the White Sox in the World Series in 5 Games. The Pirates offense actually not that amazing this season, Travis Buck was traded and Pearce took over in right field and he put a spark hitting over .300 with 16 homeruns but Ronny Cedeno did not have a good offensive season, Werth could not match his 30 homerun season of 2010, and there were some low averages such as Cedeno's, Fontenot's, Jone's and Ikari's. Andrew McCutchen has emerged as an elite center fielder with another .300+ season and 61 steals in 63 tries. Their pitching was their bright part and has been since 2009. Sanchez put up another great year and Cook and Duke overcame injuries to have good years as well(Cook maybe had a career year) as Maholm had his moments but Jeff Karstens was a question with a near 5.00 ERA and inability to pitch late into games along with his June injury. The bullpen was led by Street who overcame a non-existent April to have 41 saves in 44 tries to lead the NL, Bautista, Beimel, new comer Mike Zagurski were leaders in the bullpen while Tyler Yates struggled badly with an ugly 5.88 ERA. With the offseason coming up, Yates and Karstens are both questions and may even be released.

Contract Renewal - Karstens Gets No Contract

The Pirates completed contract renewals after negotiations were completed. Zach Duke's request was a 4000 point cut and so he went from 4,500 to 430 points. But Aaron Cook, who had a great season, went from 6,500 to 10,380 points so money may be somewhat tight. But Jeff Karstens tried to go from 3,000 points to 5,240 points and he was not offered a contract which could very likely end his career in Pittsburgh, he wanted to upgrade after 1 more win but his ERA was .74 points higher than 2010

Free Agents 2011

Yep it's the greatest time of the year, free agents time. The Pirates will go into the offseason looking for a 5th starter or bottom of the line starter for the rotation. A relief pitcher or two and someone who can platoon with Pearce in right field and maybe even start. Pearce had a great season in 2011 but he hit .208 with 0 homeruns in the postseason showing that his skills can lead him good stats on some years, but he can have a year that shows hit REAL abilities the next year(D con, D pow, 2 TRJ). Also, a backup outfield may be needed and so could a utility such as Jamey Carroll and maybe a back-up catcher but there may be no need for a backup catcher because all 4 catchers on the market have potential to start. This also may be the best 1st basemen class of ALL-TIME, but we will not spend lots of money on 1st basemen. There are also so many young stars out there as well.

The 'marquee' players will have a * next to them

Below are the free agents

ok here are my suggestions:

1. GO ALL OUT FOR JAKE PEAVY. Obviously, you need one starter, and if you can sign him, you'll automatically have the best starting rotation in the league. Offer him a 5-year deal, and if you're lucky, you might be able to get away with a deal in the 5000-8000 range.
2. GO ALL OUT FOR AARON HEILMAN. Again, if you can obtain him for a good deal, you'll have the best one-two bullpen punch - Street and Heilman - in the league. If you could sign both of these guys to 5-year deals, they will push your pitching over the top.
3.SIGN CHRIS SNYDER. Maybe only to be a backup, but you ABSOLUTELY HAVE to sign him.
4.MAKE REASONABLE OFFERS TO NICK MARKAKIS, JUAN RIVERA, SHANE VICTORINO, AND RYAN CHURCH. Any of them would be reliable right fielders for a good time. Obviously, Markakis is the jewel here, but any of them would be good for your team. In the second round, Matt Murton would make a decent bench player/AAA backup.

Pirates Sign Carroll and Lohse To Contracts As Free Agency Heats Up

The Pirates have completed their rotation and gotten a good man off the bench in just one swoop. The Pirates took Kyle Lohse from the Cardinals with a 4,530 point deal, he had a 3.46 ERA and a 13-9 record in 2011. Jamey Carroll will come of the bench and in full time, he hit 7 homeruns and a .288 average with the Rangers. The Pirates may still need a right field insurance and a relief pitcher. It was said that the right field crop was too pricy but some were offered deals but they were not taken. Peavy was also too pricey at 9,850 and Lohse seemed like a bargain.

In other moves:

Betimet Goes to Reds

Sanchez goes from O's to Tigers

Yadier Molina goes back to Cardinals

A.Gonzalez goes back to Padres

Youkilis goes back to Red Sox

Shoppach goes back to Indians

Atkins goes back to Rockies

Oswalt lands in Detriot in big move(As if the Astros needed this)

Matthews Jr. Goes back to Angels

Punto goes back to Twins

Hamilton goes to Orioles in big move

Peavy goes back to White Sox

Hudson goes to Orioles

Zimmerman goes to Rangers in big move

J.D Drew goes from Red Sox to Yankees

I wonder about Heilman since every RP stinks, he had a 4.98 ERA though. Snyder was still available but I think he's more of a starter and would not like being the main backup. I think Murton is someone to go after, maybe a low contract or so. Markakis, Rivera, Victorino and Church were actually more money than I expected so I tried for lower deals and none tried it
