Pirates Spring Training 2011 Preview

Pirates fans may have finally gotten that Beltran homerun off their minds from game 4 of the NLDS because its spring training 2011 already. The Pirates have only gotten one big name from the free agent market but he's a closer who had a rough year last year but has been a great closer in his career. He is expected to close to give Hanrahan more time to grow as set-up man even though he was sensational in 2009. The Pirates finally made the playoffs last year after a long wait since 1992 and can now look for a division title. The Pirates have pretty much the same team going into 2011 as 2010. The same old faces will be there and Karstens will be the 5th starter a great pitching staff headed by 2010 cy young winner Anibal Sanchez, Duke, Maholm and veteran Aaron Cook. The Pirates are trying to teach Steve Pearce to become more useful and he's learning 1st base which is useful because he crushes lefties and can give Jones a day off against a good lefty. The Pirates also have a choice over Clement or Diaz at catcher this season. If Pearce learns 1B then Clement may not be needed and can finally give the young player Robinzon Diaz(now G,E,D,D,D 2 TRJ) a chance to shine. Clement has gotten off to terrible starts in the last 2 years and has 12 career homeruns and a .245 batting average in 502 career at bats. The Pirates also did what they were expected to do and released veteran RHP Chad Bradford.

maybe I could've but I'm gonna have to trust in my rotation which is actually not that bad

But I'm amazed of how many good free agents moved. especially Mauer to the Padres

year one: under .500 :(

year two: great success, but we, the cardinals and astros all collapsed at the end to lose it. but 86-76

year three: we made it as the wild card team but lost in 4 games to mets in the nlds

we got Travis Buck, Ikari(draft pick), Fontenot, Amezaga, anibal sanchez, cook and now street(and more)

and we lost Capps, Moss, Grabow and I think more through trades(I dont remember)

I try to play 1 game a series and post it here and I don't play many games other than those and I play and post important games. I do it because if I play every game then I'll win 120 games

2011 National League Central Preview

Image St. Louis Cardinals - 1st in NL Central for 2010

The Cardinals won the NL Central last year but bowed down to the Dodgers in the NLDS. They will have pretty much the same team as last year except they got Oliver Perez to replace Kyle Lohse who left. You can expect them to win either the Central or wild card this season.

Key Addition: Oliver Perez

Key Loss: Kyle Lohse

ImagePittsburgh Pirates - 2nd in NL Central for 2010

The Pirates had a great year thanks to pitching and they added another pitcher who has had great success in Huston Street to be closer. They are in the same position as the Cardinals as in they will probably win either the division or wild card and with their young players getting better, could make a run.

Key Addition: Huston Street

Key Loss: Chad Bradford

Image Cincinnati Reds - 3rd in NL Central for 2010

The Reds started off terribly but were one of the hottest teams in baseball over the last few months and finished over .500. They stayed quiet in the offseason but had a key loss in losing ace Aaron Harang so they overall failed in the offseason. They also have some good offensive players like Phillips, Votto, Bruce and Rolen but they're gonna need a consistent bullpen and offense to compete.

Key Additions: None

Key Losses: Aaron Harang

Image Milwaukee Brewers - 4th in NL Central for 2010

The Brewers were unable to win their second straight division title and finished 4th in the division. There is not reason to think that they won't compete as they managed to sign Brandon Webb in the offseason to get their much needed ace and they definetly have the offense to compete in this division

Key Additions: Brandon Webb

Key Losses: None

ImageChicago Cubs - 5th in NL Central for 2010

The Cubs were once again a frustrating team in 2010 and are now at exactly .500 through the last 3 years. They resigned Derek Lee in the offseason which was important to them but they need a good bullpen and for some reason they decide to start Reed Johnson over Soriano in left field. Maybe that'll change this year.

Key Additions: None

Key Losses: None

ImageHouston Astros -Last i NL Central for 2010

The Astros organization has fallen apart. They have gone way downhill since falling apart in September 2009. They are finally having to cope with they players getting older and they lost long time Astros Berkman and their closer Valverde. They are gonna be in last place and theres no way around it after losing Berkman, Boone, Valverde and Tejeda in the last 2 years.

Key Additions: None

Key Losses: Lance Berkman, Jose Valverde

The Pirates will once again use about the same rosters except they now have Huston Street and Robinzon Diaz here. Diaz has been in the minors for a few years and will finally get a chance in the majors and is a major upgrade against LHP then Clement was. Street will also take over the closers role and Zach Duke will be the opening day starter in Cincinatti.

Sanchez is displeased that though he won the cy young, he is not the opening day starter.

I always use my pitchers that have been around with me longest for opening day starter usually. But Duke has more experience so I'll trust him but Sanchez is the #2

Major League Baseball Opening Day 2011

April 2 -- The Pirates season didn't start the way they wanted to after the Pirates had no answer to Micah Owings. Micah Owings was the opening day starter for the Reds this season and threw 8 innings of 3 run ball but what he did with the bat was just as impressive. Owings drove in the 1st run of the game off of opening day starter Zach Duke in the 3rd inning and then Owings struck again in the 4th inning for a 2-run double which at that time gave them a 4-0 lead. But the Pirates showed some life in the 5th inning when Garrett Jones led off the inning with a line drive homerun to right field to make it 4-1, Cedeno would then hit an RBI single and Duke would hit a weak 2 out bloop single to center field to make it 4-3. But there was a scary moment in the 7th where Ryan Doumit would have to leave the game after getting ran over at the plate where Bruce scored after a Votto RBI double, his condition is not known as of now but Diaz had to replace him. But Zach Duke's struggles and Owings doing everything led to an opening day loss in Great America Ballpark.
