No, since rosters shrink back down to 25 players for the postseason, the slight roster flexibility that's lost is for September only.

The point was for the Yankees to cause a very slight roster inflexibility for the Red Sox on the 40-man roster during September. Paul Byrd took up the 39th spot, so there's one spot open. If the Red Sox acquire somebody by Monday night's deadline for postseason eligibility, that's the last spot. If Matsuzaka comes off the DL, the team would need to clear another spot for him. This really shouldn't be a problem at all for the Red Sox, because they could re-assign Jeff Bailey to the 60-day DL, as he's been disabled since July 5.

Edit: Why does Yahoo sports say that Bailey is on the 15-day DL when other sites don't? If he isn't and the Sox need to clear a roster spot later for Matsuzaka, then they would have to DFA someone. This is the exact situation that might occur.

Keep in mind that it cost the Yankees nothing to make the claim on Carter. Their action was one of nominal reward versus zero risk.
