The Pirates had finally caught up to the Cardinals for the wild card but were not able to take the wild card lead in the finale. Phil Dumatrait was called up for an emergency start and was roughed up in the 2nd for 4 runs capped by a 3 run double by Mark DeRosa. The Pirates came back with homeruns by former Cubs Ronny Cedeno and Mike Fontenot. Up 4-2, the Cardinals got a big 2-run homerun from Troy Glaus to make it 6-2 which would prove to be the decider as RBI singles by Young and Cedeno in the 8th would make it 6-4 but in the end the Cardinals took a 1 game lead over the Pirates in the wild card with todays win. Dumatrait is also expected to be sent back down to AAA

The Pirates have swept the Phillies due to a clutch homerun from a 1st basemen. The game started as Karstens gave up a run in the 1st but things got interesting as the 2nd pitch the Carlos Ruiz gave Karstens elbow problems and he had to leave the game by Ruiz greeted Evan Meek with a 2 run double part of a 3 run inning. The Pirates trailed 4-1 going into the 6th where Susumu Ikari drove in two with a rocket off the wall in center field and it set up for a 2 run go ahead homerun for Garrett Jones which would be the factor in today's 5-4 win. This win was huge because both the Cardinals and Astros lost so they now lead the wild card by 1 game and only trail the Astros by 2 for the division

PNC Park -- The Pirates have swept the Brewers and have so far been the hottest team in the August with an 8-1 record but most important, with an Astros loss the Pirates have shocked everyone and are now tied with the divison lead with the Astros! Well to the game, it started in the 2nd where a red hot Jason Kendall drove in a run to take an early lead but that lead would diminish as Ikari drove in a run with a 5th innings double. The score would stay like that thanks to Paul Maholm great performance today and Travis buck would deliever in the 8th with an RBI single which would be the game winning run in a 2-1 win

Minute Maid Park -- The Pirates lost a tough one to the Astros to fall out of first place. The Pirates split the first two games to have a tie for first but the Astros now have 1 game lead with an 8th inning rally. Craig Hansen had to make a spot start for the Pirates and he delievered for sure matching Roy Oswalt who had it going tonite. The Pirates had a 1-0 lead going into the 8th but Yates imploded and an RBI double by Erstad drove in the tying run and Kazuo Matsui gave the Astros the lead for good with an RBI single just by Mike Fontenot.

Shea Stadium -- The Pirates have broken their 3 game losing streak with an exciting win in the 2nd game of the series against the best team in the majors. The scoring started in the 4th where Carlos Beltran homered off of Duke but the Pirates came back quickly when Travis Buck lined an RBI double to tie it. The Pirates were resilant in the game but were down by one in the 8th when Susumu Ikari had the biggest homerun in his young career to tie the game off of Mike Pelfrey in the 8th but thats when it got interesting. Vazquez had a pinch hit single and Andrew McCutchen getting a rare start off came off the bench to run and stole second and later got to 3rd on a groundout by Buck. This is where Cedeno suprised everyone with a squeeze bunt that brought in the go ahead run and the winning run.

PNC Park -- It seems like the standings are always changing and it seems like we always play the Astros now and nothing changed on the third game of the series. The Pirates and Astros split the first two games of the series and the Pirates were one back coming into today. The Pirates were down 3-2 going into the 8th but an RBI knock by Ryan Doumit would tie it. The Pirates had a runner on second in the 9th and with 1 out, Ramon Vazquez came off the bench and sent a Geoff Geary offering up the middle for a single and when the throw home by Erstad went up the line, the Pirates went crazy and were tied for first place once again. Another milestone set was Garrett Jones got his 100th RBI of the year already in the middle of August, hes the first Pirates since Jason Bay in 2006 to have 100 RBI's as a Pirates

Pirates Month In Review | Stretch Run Will Be Crucial

The Pirates have shocked everyone as they came as a bottomdweller and are now in first place with pretty much the same team as last year. The Pirates only went 14-13 in August after an 8-1 start and are 3-7 in there last 10 games but luckily for the Pirates, the Astros and Cardinals collapsed as the Astros went 8-19 and the Cardinals went 10-17. The Pirates have a 2 game lead over the Astros but don't play the Astros in September.

The Pirates have also made September Call-Ups and heres the list:

The Pirates are beggining to fall apart after this 4 game sweep. The Pirates have fallen to 1-6 this month and may have lost their spot to the Cardinals for the Central lead, yep, the Cardinals are tied for first with the Pirates now unless the Cardinals win. The Pirates scored 2 in the 2nd but the Rockies rallied quickly and scored 4 runs off of Dumatrait which destroyed a nice spot start for Glanville who went 5 innings and didn't allow a run
