June In Review | .500 Month puts Pirates in tough spot

Early on the Pirates looked like they had a shot at going to the postseason but now the chances are falling. They just lost 2 of the first 4 games in St. Louis and are now 7 games behind the Cardinals. The Wild Card is another chance to make it of course but they are 6 games behind for that behind the Astros. It has not been lucky as the Astros and Cardinals are in 2nd and 3rd place respectivly for the best record in the NL, the Mets have the best record. The Pirates stand at 45-37 after a 13-13 month, they will not give up and they will not go out to get any players unless there is a chance of competing, either way they will not make a huge move but could be somewhat active for a middle of the class player this offseason. Also I will not post stats until July is over.

NL Central Standings

St. Louis Cardinals | 52-30

Houston Astros | 51-31

Pittsburgh Pirates | 45-37

Milwaukee Brewers | 44-38

Cincinnati Reds | 38-44

Chicago Cubs | 37-45

NL Wild Card Standings

Houston Astros | 51-31

Pittsburgh Pirates | 45-37

Milwaukee Brewers | 44-38

Florida Marlins | 42-40

San Fransisco Giants | 42-40

San Diego Padres | 42-40

After losing the first 2 games to the Cardinals, the Pirates were able to split the series with a 5-4 win. The game started off rough for Kevin Hart, who is just fighting to stay with the MLB roster and came into the game with a 6.66 ERA. Pujols hit his 350th homerun of his career to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead but Ikari was able to come through in the 2nd with a 2 run double to center field and Kevin Hart had the biggest blow with a 2 run double, he came into the game as a .103 hitter. The most tension in the game came in the 8th where with 2 outs and a runner on and the Pirates leading 5-4, Joel Hanrahan came in and was able to retire the dangerous Pujols to get out of the inning and he would get another save to lower his ERA to 1.47.

The Pirates tried to sweep the Twins in PNC Park today but could not finish them off on the final day of interleague. It all started in the 1st inning when Justin Morneau hit a grand slam off of Zach Duke in the 1st to give the Twins an early 4-0 lead which would be enough for Liriano as he went 7 shutout innings and struck out 12 in a dominant outing. The only run the Pirates scored was an error in which Delmon Young dropped the ball in the 9th.

The Pirates took the 3rd game of the series against the now 1st place Astros. It was a huge pitchers duel but in the 9th things started to happen as Travis Buck drove in McCutchen to give them a 9th inning lead. Things would not go easy for Hanrahan in the 9th, Jason Michaels would end up tying the game with a 2 out single. Ikari gave the Pirates a much needed win with an RBI groundout where the throw by Tejeda was late and the Pirates took 2 of 3 from Houston

NL Central Standings and Wild Card

St. Louis Cardinals | 57-39

Pittsburgh Pirates | 53-43

Cardinals lead the wild card at the moment

I think you should make a trade right now. Ikari looks decent at third base, so is there anything else that you could fix with a good acquisition?

not bad last I checked, I turned my wii off a few minutes ago so I'll check tommorow

the only thing I can think of is starting pitcher or left-handed relief pitcher

Dumatrait isn't too good and Hart is having a bad year but yet has a good record, high ERA though

I'll check it out tommorow

for a left handed reliever, I recommend George Sherrill of the Orioles. He has B control and vs Lefty 4, lvl 2 CB and lvl 2 CHG.
plus, you can pick up Fernando Cabrera in the same trade :)

Well Sherrill's fine, and perhaps you could pull off a steal of Nick Markakis.

If he's winning games, then ERA doesn't matter.

The Pirates completed a 3 game sweep of the Cubs to end the unofficial first half and will now head to the all-star game after this. The Pirates got all over Ted Lilly in the first with an RBI double by Travis Buck and a towering opposite field homerun for Steve Pearce made it 4-0 early. The score would be 5-1 going into the 9th so the Bucs called on Dumatrait but an error by 2B Amezaga allowed 2 unearned runs to come in with an Aaron Miles 2 run double. Hanrahan would come in and finish off pinch hitter Micah Hoffpauier and Reed Johnson to finish off the the Cubs who continue to have a disastrous season.

2 Pirates Selected to All-Star Game

The Pirates had two players selected through coach selection. Closer Joel Hanrahan and Center Fielder Andrew McCutchen will be headed to St. Louis. Hanrahan has been sensational with a 1.30 ERA and 28 saves so far. Andrew McCutchen is having no sophmore slump and is having another fine season with a .320 average and 6 homeruns. The full all-star game lineup will be announced during the game
