I'm pretty sure they don't put half the thought into this as you do.

I use very similar methods. However I also try also see how players are used too, such as those pinch hitters who are put in, some for hitting that home run, or just hitting successfully. I use the same avg to contact formula as earlier. With power though, I have worked out this by trial and error;

a power of say 180 will yield the player 31-37 home runs.
a power of say 150 will yield the player 21-26 home runs
a power of say 170 will yield the player 27-33 home runs
a power of say 96 will yield the player 3-10 home runs
a power of say 125 will yield the player 11-16 home runs.
a power of say 140 will yield the player 18-23 home runs.

Now that formula is more in depth than what I have written I was just pushed for time as I'm at work. If a player is playing MLB level than their power is put as shown. (I have the full listing of power to home run table on excel). If they are A, AA, AAA I drop their power down the amount of levels they are from the MLB. Say if Joe Smith hit 25 home runs at AAA level. AAA is one level away from the MLB so his power would not be 152 say, but it would be 140. (Note this is an example)

Here is the default power scale (hitter with no special abilities). HR's remain constant regardless of CON or TRJ. However, projected RBI increase with each increase in CON; and TRJ effects human users but has no effect on simulated games:

PWR HR+/-
50 4
60 4
70 4
80 7
90 7
100 9
110 12
120 14
130 17
140 20
150 23
160 27
170 31
180 34
190 37
200 40
210 41
220 41
230 46
240 46
250 46

I wrote a walk-thru. It's the last post on page 1 of this thread. If you have any questions, you can post them here.

I'm coming up with my own system for updating rosters. I'm using stats from the previous season, so I'm going to wait until 2009 is over. Basically what I'm doing is I'm taking the league lead for certain stats, average them, and that average would be the highest possible you can get, then I'll determine each player's abilities based on that average. I was just wondering what stats I should use to average for each ability in PP. Only for fielding abilities. I'll be using the system for control that Eric Davis posted on the first page, and I already have a system for stamina.

For FLD, I applied a weighted 3-year average using RF/9, RngR and UZR/150 (w/ more emphasis on the latter two). For ERES, I don't remember exactly, but I seperated fielding errors from throwing errors. I probably used fielding errors divided by chances for ERES (or maybe I used Error Rate) and throwing errors divided by assists to determine Throwing 2, 3 or 4. For ARM STR, I used scouting reports, Tango's scouting reports by the fans, the ARM ratings at fangraphs.com, and a few other obscure stats.

I'm just creating missing players by team, primarily pitches atm. Done Bob McCrory, Brian Matusz of Baltimore. Am doing Jason Berken now along with Chris Tillman. Will try to give Hot head to Tillman. Any ideas for abilities blue/red for both?

I'm still having troube figuring out how to determine players' fielding abilities. I don't know what half these stats mean, and if I did, I wouldn't know how to combine them to turn them into a scale from 1-15.

The Fielding Glossary is a good place to start: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/glossary/

There are also links to a 2-part UZR primer at the end of the Fielding Glossary.

After that, check out the UZR leaderboard to see how it looks. Remember, 0 is average: http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?p ... 09&month=0

To convert them into a scale of 1-15 you can do it a couple of ways:

1) Average RngR and UZR/150 for each player, make 0 = FLD 8 or 9 (because 0 is average for RngR and UZR while 8 or 9 is average for MLBPP), make the highest rated player 15, make the lowest rated player 1 (or 2 or 3) and then fill in the gaps between those three numbers. It won't be 100% accurate, but you could do a lot worse.

2) The way I described at the bottom of Pg 1 of this thread (viewtopic.php?f=11&t=3471&st=0&sk=t&sd=a). It may seem longer/harder, but it saves time because it converts everything for you and is deadly accurate.

Ok, I'm a little confused about UZR and RngR. Is a higher or lower number better for those stats?

Zero is the league average. Anything positive is above average, the higher the better. Anything negative is below average. And yes, Franklin Gutierrez really is that good and Vernon Wells really is that bad.

make new teams of what the real teams are now and save them as arrange teams. There is space for another 30 teams. You will just have a choice of 60 teams 30 from then, and the updated 30 now.
