you know it's a popularity contest when Mark McGwire was selected with the most votes for 1b when he hit 205 avg and nothing meaningful in rbi or hr.

If they want the fans to vote then let them select the pitchers and make an exhibition game. OTHERWISE keep the fans out of it, let all the coachs pick, coachs for allstar game chose the bench, and let it count for home field advantage.

I agree 100%

Hmm, Jacoby Ellsbury's in 7th and if he makes it through a few guys then he's in there. He may not deserve it compared to the others but I'd like to see him go.

I'm glad to see Longoria has a great lead over A-Rod because Longoria actually deserves this, not like other votings

Jeter deserves it alot this year but Jed Lowrie's in 5th

But who do you guys think should be the starters for the all-star game?

AL- Greinke
NL- ? Either Cain or Lincecum because they're getting the wins, Haren should start but he's not getting any run support so the wins aren't up where they should be, he has a 2.19 ERA too

Once again, the voting shows that fans should not vote (Coaches should). Rollins is second in shortstop batting 220, Vartiek second in catcher batting 220, Hamilton has been injured the whole season and will probvably make the game by 200k+. Yadier Molina will be the catcher for the NL, Youkilis is first over Morneu and Tex, who both deserve it more, Utley is second, and Braun is second for the outfield. My guess is Cain will start, but Haren deserves it because he's first in ERA. But his record isn't too good, and people care too much about wins.

but cain is still deserving as well, he's been the unluckiest pitcher in the bigs the past 2-3 seasons, now he's finally getting run support.
molina is a fantastic defensive catcher, and that the fans vote him in is impressive alone considering that he's not exactly very good offensively, not even the best in his family (bengie).
utley could be first in my opinion, he's right on pace with what he's done his whole career.
braun is playing better than in 2008, which was an impressive season in its own right.
the rest I pretty much agree with, but you can't base it on batting average alone, cownip.
I'm not saying the fans should vote, but you catch my drift (i love that phrase).

Not only does Haren lead the league in ERA, but also in WHIP (nobody's even close) and BAA. Between Lincecum and Cain, Tim's better in almost every category. His league-leading strikeouts give him a big edge, if you like that sort of thing. And I can't believe he's only given up four home runs in 16 starts.

I like Haren, but I would guess Lincecum gets the nod. Cain, while still deserving, walks too many guys for my taste.

Yeah you are right cownip but remember that part of the All Star game is seeing you're favorite player in the game, even if they are doing poor or are injured.

I know, and it will never change because that brings in more money (people get more into the all-star game). It's more likely it will extend to pitching if anything. Jeter wouldn't be starting most likely then, Bartlet would (well actually, even the coaches are partial to older stars. Look at a lot of the most popular hall of famers in the game, and they often started when coaches voted in bad years at the end of their career. Jeter is not having a bad year, nor is he at the end of his career, but there is still some bias. Jeter has probably been the most popular player, but not the best, of his era. He or Griffey). Jeet would be in the game as a bench player at least. Braun I was wrong about, Utley too, you're right. Mcann has performed much better in my opionion, but I like Molina still.

Yeah, it probablty never will change. The fans love voting. And unfortunately sometimes it is stupid how injured players like Hamilton are going to make the All Stars but someone that is having a good year and is injury free (can't think of one off the top of my head) won't get onto the All Star team.

I wish Zimmerman could go but of course, low fan-base and too many good 3B's out there

Voting for all-stars is like class elections in elementary school, a popularity contest. Sometimes schools let the teachers make the final verdict (smart move). All-Stars should be voted on by players (not being alloud to vote for themself), managers, and coaches.

That's not a bad idea, but I'm sure that like pitch tipping eventually high profile players will pay lower profiled players to vote for them.

However most major leaguers care about their money.

I don't know, I think that the coaches and managers vote. But even then it's a pop contest. I Think the stats should determine the Best NL and AL teams because numbers don't lie.

I would have voted on Mauer as well, but he may have voted Martinez beacause Mauer hasn't played as much of the season and for all we know, his stats now could be a fluke.

That or he just like Martinez better than Mauer.

Mauer missed, what, 3 weeks?
Batting 400 pretty much no matter what past June is a crazy feat, and the fact that Mauer's finally developed that power that makes him a true five-tool player just solidifies his case.
