I'm looking for some tips for Super Smash Bros Brawl since I recently got the game. My brother has the advantage that he's already played it a few times at friend's houses while I haven't. I need some help so I can beat him.

with captain falcon, use his falcon punch (B) to edgeguard.
also, the up-b really helps, not just for recovering but for attacking guys right above you.
thats all i got right now, on gamefaqs you can get guides for any character really by going to faqs, then scrolling down.

If you've got a GameCube controller, you'll probably do best playing with that instead of the Wiimote. I've had the most success with it, anyway.

Also, you'll usually run into lag in online matches, so that means you'll have to be more anticipatory than in offline matches. Just keep a heads-up and know what's coming as you play and you'll do okay.

I've got no GC controller but I'll probably get one this summer sometime.

Also what character would be good for a beginner?

Kirby is advanced and basic at the same time. If you know how to use air attacks well then diddy is the next step

yeah i say use a speed guy to get quick compoes then move up to guys who need more timing. i say the best characters
Ike since he is both speed and power
Kirby well its kirby the most annoying character on the game with his damn float up back to the stage
snake he is the hardest character to kill because even if he has like 200% damage you can still move him away from the edge and fight

So I should start with Kirby then? Can you use miis on this game? It doesn't look like it from the instruction manual but they could be unlockable or something...

Ah finally something I can help with.

Snake is sort of an advanced character to use.

Meta Knight is very popular but for some reason I can't use him.

Captain Falcon just plain owns

Some characters can chaingrab, which is grabbing the opponent, using a down throw and grabbing them before they can move again, it is cheap but a good place to start (unless you have a wall you have to run forward to grab them again).
Some examples of chaingrabbers are the Ice Climbers (REALLY advanced, I can't chaingrab with them), King Dedede (probably the best), Falco (it stops working at higher %)
The Ice Climbers also have a cool attack where (if you have a gamecube controller) you grab them near the edge, wait until the Ice Climbers are close, use a down throw and immediately short-hop and push forward on the C-Stick to usually kill them if they aren't R.O.B or anyone with a cheap recovery.

Aside from chaingrabbing, another tactic (which I usually only use if I'm down a life) is edgehogging. Only one character can hold the edge at a time, so if you take it then they can't, this works best on characters with tether recoveries such as Olimar and Ivysaur.

A beginner tip: Don't forget to dodge, if you dodge regularly your opponent may miss with a slower attack, giving you a chance to attack him.

A tip for people who care about having fun: Learn to use more than one character, you're not going to be using the game to it's full potential if you only use one out of over 30 characters.
Some of my favorites are Olimar, Pokemon Trainer, Captain Falcon, Wolf, Luigi, Ness, Lucas, Link, Random  , Jigglypuff, Snake, Ike, and many more.

Remember to play a lot so you can unlock all the characters too.

Maybe if you have a video camera you can record some matches of you and I can tell you what to do more and what to do less.

And I almost forgot about meteor smashes, in short: They knock your opponent downwards quickly, use them to send your opponent to their doom. If you ask later I can tell you which attacks use it.

Probably most important is don't give up when losing and have fun.

In the future you can message me with any questions. I may not be the best here (I might be, but my online lag prevents from finding out for sure), but I'm probably one of the most knowledgeable.

I would suggest to use one of these characters in the begining Note: they are in no specific order
A. Kirby
B. Captian Falcon
C. Ike
D. Samus
E. Bowser

For advanced play
A. Snake
B. Wolf/Falco/Fox
C. Pit

People who just plain own
A. Sonic
B. Lucario

Captain Falcon must be unlockable because I don't see him in the manual...

Ok so I'll start for a little while with Kirby. I don't have a video camera that I can use though. Is Captain Olimar good? He looks cool.

Fox is the best player. (in my opion) You hit A repeatedly and he lets out a flurry of kicks. Jump hit B and point up and be near someone. The result is good. Use that on a smash ball. And his smash move is a TANK beat that.
