For sure. Rivera's gotta be there too. Gossage, Wilhelm, Fingers, and Sutton round out the possible picks from the Hall itself. None are left-handed. Any love for Billy Wagner as the pen's token lefty?

The debate about CF is a great one. I thought Willie Mays hands down, obviously because of his great fielding and number of homeruns, and known to be a power/speed guy. So, I went online and started pulling up some stats. The one that really stuck out at me was batting average.

Ty Cobb had a lifetime batting average over 24 seasons of .366, Mayes 22 seasons and .302, and DiMaggio 13 seasons and .325. The more amazing part of this statistic is that neither Mayes nor DiMaggio ever hit over .366 during any one season, but this is what Cobb averaged.

We debate about Runs and RBI also being a key stat. This is obviously really hard to compare since they are dependent upon other players around them. Also, runs are more likely to happen if you are a lead off hitter, whereas RBI are more likely to happen if you are in a cleanup spot.

The better stat for Runs would really be related to, how many times did Player X put themselves into scoring position per plate appearance, meaning, got themselves to second base or past, whether it be by HR, double, triple, and stolen bases.

The better stat for RBIs would really be how well a player hit to move runners either two or more bases (1 if on third), or hit when a runner was in scoring position (in case that poky runner on second can't make it home). This would really reduce the totals to a percentage. Of course getting a hit and moving the runner, and getting a hit and scoring the runner are quite different.

Still, obviously you could debate more about what I just wrote, so just leave it at that my opinion, no debate necessary. I think cownip has put it correctly that all 3 should be made and it would be up to each person to start who they want.

Cownip, let me know (by PM or by password requests) when you get your list done and the abilities of each defined and I would be willing to make one of these great hall of famers. I know how hard it is to create a whole team.

Just to complicate things further: I don't think Mickey Mantle would be a poor choice either. He'd actually be the OPS+ leader (172) among that group too with Cobb a close second (167). DiMaggio clocks in at 155 and Mays at 156. As an added intangible for Mantle, he was a switch hitter.

I knew there was someone else that was missing from that list. Mantle is definitely another thought for consideration. Comfy Lomb, thanks for throwing more dirt in the water!

While Mantle is one of my favorite players of all time (I read a lot about the Yankees and there are some pretty good stories about him. Lou Gherig is my favorite), I don't think he's as good but may be should be on the bench. Here is my suggestion based on what I've seen. As I suggested before, we should have an official list (in which some poisitions may be decided by vote (CF) and others by me be a gerk and deciding myself (3B)), and a list of a lot of players that were close/could be argued the best in that position. This way we give players a lot of choices and no one is too unhappy. So here is what I propose we have for each position.
1st Baseman
Obviously Lou Gherig is the best and their isn't anyone else close, but are there any others you would like to see as a back up?
2B:
I'm thinking we should make Pete Rose, Joe Morgan, maybe Robinson because of his historical signifigance, and a few others I heard mentioned and will add later.
Short Stop: Since I know so little and there is a general consensu, Honus Wagner
Back up ideas:
3B: A-Rod (made as a success player) and Smidt also made as a back up and starter for some
Catcher: I'm sorry, but I really think Yogi takes the cake on this one, but we can make a Bench as well. Maybe we should have Pudge as a defensive catcher when he was in his golden age? Not as a starter, but a defensive back up. Any ideas?
Outfield:
Right Field: Ruth, any back up ideas? Clemente is an interesting one to throw in there
Center Field: I'm going to go with Ty Dimaggio haha. I think Dimagio was a better clutch hitter by far from what I've seen but Ty Cobb was a great stealer, player pre-1900 and was one of the only good hitters of that time, and had such a high average
Mayes should be a back up.
Left Field: I'm still going for Ted Williams but I'm open to ideas. I'll look back at other potential players and edit this.
Pitchers:
I haven't heard enough debate to really make a list, but for relievers (wagner by the way is a very good closer but he is not excellent let alone a hall-of-famer. All players on this team with the exception of Pete Rose (who should be in there, he was gambling for his own team) are hall-of-famers or future ones (A-Rod, Mariano)):
Mariano Rivera is the given closer
Anyone interested in Hoffman in the glory days? He's a post season and big game bust but he does have the most saves
Dennis Eckersley
Maybe Goose, Wilhelm, Fingers, and Sutton.
We'll do starters early.
Does this method sound all right?
Edit: Comfortably Lomb, I thought when you said LF Williams you meant Bernie. I mean I like Bernie a lot and he's a great player and all, but hall of fame, let alone best all time haha. That makes more sense.

Dude really, not to be offensive, but come on!
I know that you are a yankees fan and all, but, really, A-Rod......
I showed you the awards for the other 2 3B, so maybe A-Rod can be the backup.......

Please don't post without reading everything else already said. There has been many an argument about Mayes and all these guys and you need to read them first before you say anything mate so then you can try to state your case. Saying Mayes?????? isn't much of an argument and is just repeating what has already been said.
A-Rod could have the most homeruns, is golden glove-quality, and will very possibly have the most MVPs of any player. True Lou Gherig would have had more if they could give one to a player every year (then they could only give it every other), but still. He also will have near the most RBIs and some years he has great clutch years. He also fairly hasn't been in the play-offs enough to say he's a complete bust there but you knows he's no Jeter there.

We gotta have two catchers Bench and Yogi. Unless Yogi does another Aflac commercial, and then he is off the team.

That was fast, wow. Yes, I agree we need the two catchers. I don't want to leave anyone dissapointed. I mean to add Mayes as a centerfielder for back-up/the minors. This is making me scared because I plan to use this team but play my expansion team in the same division. These guys are too good !

Why can't we make 2 teams, AL and NL? Seems like this one is mostly AL.

That might be a great idea....but it also means a lot of work in success mode.

SmilingFaces96, MrWelz, and Wyl can make most of the ripped players. But if we have to, we can hack players on the PS2. But that is a last resort.
