What about RBIs though? And win shares count for less when a player is on a great team but that doesn't mean he wasn't as good. I'm presonally ignoring that stat. Total bases i also pretty important but tthe three most to me is average/OBP, RBI, and Runs Scored. Also clutch batting average is important too. These 4 stats affect the team the most.

If a player is on a great team, he will get more RBI's than if he's on a bad team. Example 1: Hack Wilson's 191 (?) RBI season. He had a pretty good season, but in the late 1990's, people were hitting 56 homers every year. Why did none of them get 191 RBI? because the batters before them didn't get on base as much.

And anyway, as far as what Bill James says, it's fair to players on good teams and players on bad teams.

Bill James says that RBI is overrated, and Runs are underrated.

That's just me, anyway. The New Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract is my bible

I don't know. I believe that Joe DiMaggio should be the starting center fielder. However, we should make all three (Ty Cobb, DiMaggio and Mayes) and let the player decide. Here is the list so far according to me. Bold are certain
1B Lou Gherig
2B Up in the air
3B Alex Rodriguez (We should redo him and make on based on his best year. He is a little underpowered this year as he usually has 30- homers)
SS Up in the air
Catcher: Yogi Berra
Right Fielder: Babe Ruth
Center Fielder: Joe Dimaggio (We should also make Ty Cobb and Mayes)
Left Fielder: Ted Williams
Pitchers:
1. Sandy Koufax
2. Walter Johnson
3. Grover Cleveland Alexander
4. Pedro? (not sure on this one or number 5. He has the second best Adjusted ERA+)
5. Robert Moses "Lefty" Grove (has the third best Adjusted ERA+, read below)
Relievers: Still not idea
Closer: Mariano Rivera

A-ROD are you kidding me!
He is useless in the playoffs, and he isn't on the legends all century list....
How about for 3B...
-Mike Schmidt -http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Schmidt
-Brooks Robinson -http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brooks_Robinson
Just look at the awards they have....
And for SS what about the BIG legend
-Honus Wagner
-Cal Ripken Jr.
And 2B has to be
-Jackie Robinson.....

Johnny Bench has to be the best Catcher of all time, if he isn't then something is really wrong.

I would put Randy Johnson, Nolan Ryan, Cy Young, and Roger Clemens in there if I were you.

Elssbruy I agree is a smart stealer and so is Gardner, who is faster but not as smart when it comes to stealing. That type of thing improves easily but not speed. By the way, getting compared to Hendrickson is just the media being kind of stupid, they jump on things like that all the time. They said that Lester is probably a hall-of-famer once! He's been good, not that good, and he's way too young! Cano's swing was changed frecently to be more compact and since then he has hit almost 500 (70 at bats or so). He was 4-5 against the sox today and would have been 5-5 if an amazing play by the rookie shortstop wasn't made.
Now who is Cool Papi Bell?

This has nothing to do with Cano?! Lester probably will make Hall of Fame. Have you seen his Curve?!?! One of, if not THE best in the league. You say he good but not that good?!?!? He's 18-2 or something like that.... You already said Gardner isn't a smart stealer yet you say that now.... Something tells me you don't know just how fast Ellsbury actually is.

Lester's not going to the Hall of Fame unless he morphs into a significantly more awesome pitcher.

-----

I think either of Cobb or DiMaggio would be the best choice in center. Mays wouldn't be a bad one either but compared to those two he seems like he's ever so slightly worse. I guess I might make the choice based on the rest of the lineup. Cobb could be a .350+ hitting speedster to have leading off. The rest of the lineup looks like it's going to be filled with mashers so maybe some variety of hitter would be good.

Please stop talking about this, this is off topic. You can't say anyone is a hall-of-famer that young, and he doesn't look like one. Anyway, to the actual relvent stuff.
Now, about A-Rod

Yes, but the things he does in the regular season ar simply incredible and any other game he is the best guy you can have. In the post season in real life, I'd have a back up hall-of-famr like schmidt or robinson take his place. But overall, he is better.
Now Clemens I didn't put in there because he is way to contraversal and I didn't want to get in a fight about it. However, if you want to make him, we can mkae him an extra. CY Young wasn't actually that good of a pitcher and is genrally over-rated. He not only has the most wins but the most losses (he did pitch so many games). He was still a hall-of-famer and very good, but not one of the best.
I'm not sure about shortstop so please use some stats to back it up so I don't have to find everything  .

Honus Wagner didn't have great stats, but he played in the 1900's, a time when runs were very scarce. Stats like .300 and 5 home runs back then were worth as much as .350+ and 20+ HR now.

Yeah, but you can do it all in the season, but what really matters is the post season....
And SS has to be Honus Wagner,
"and most baseball historians consider Wagner to be the greatest shortstop ever."
(Ty) Cobb himself called Wagner "maybe the greatest star ever to take the diamond".

Here are Mike Schmidt's awards, 12x All-Star selection, World Series champion, 10x Gold Glove Award winner, 6x Silver Slugger Award, 1980 World Series MVP, 3x NL MVP

Pete Rose?

Gambling is basically required to make anyone good in success mode. . .

From Wikipedia:

Quote:
Peter Edward "Pete" Rose, Sr. (born April 14, 1941, in Cincinnati, Ohio), nicknamed Charlie Hustle, is a former player and manager in Major League Baseball. Rose played from 1963 to 1986, best known for his many years with the Cincinnati Reds. Rose, a switch hitter, is the all-time Major League leader in hits (4,256), games played (3,562), at bats (14,053)[1], and outs (10,328). He won three World Series rings, three batting titles, one Most Valuable Player Award, two Gold Gloves, the Rookie of the Year Award, and made 17 All-Star appearances at an unequaled five different positions (2B, LF, RF, 3B, and 1B).

Arod is also a right-handed bat which is something a "best of the best" HOF lineup is probably going to be lacking. Schmidt also fills that role though.

1 - 2B - Morgan (L)
2 - 3B - Schmidt (R)
3 - LF - Williams (L)
4 - RF - Ruth (L)
5 - CF - DiMaggio (R)
6 - 1B - Gehrig (L)
7 - SS - Ripken (R)
8 - C - Bench (R)

If there were a DH slot for a guy who was actually a DH then I would love to throw Edgar Martinez in there somewhere. Could go with Berra instead of bench and the L-R staggering would still be good.

Edit - I forgot about Wagner. If he's there instead of Ripken then he could bat 2nd and Schmidt could drop down to 7th. I don't know if that makes the lineup stronger or not.

Double edit - Or if there's a DH then he could bat 9th and make the 9-1 tandem incredibly awesome.
